A creek runs through the back of the campground at Montgomery Bell State Park, and for many campers, that detail alone drives the booking. Sites 1, 2, 80, 81, and those in the high 80s and 90s back directly up to the water, giving access to a slow-moving creek where dogs cool off and kids wade. Those spots fill fast, especially around holidays, and several reviewers suggest booking two to three months out to secure them.
The Four Mile Campground sits in a hollow shaded by dense tree cover, which keeps sites cool but limits satellite reception entirely and reduces cell signal to two or three bars on Verizon and T-Mobile. The internal roads are narrow asphalt, aging in places, and the entrance passage through the tent area reads more like a wide walking path than a campground road. That said, multiple reviewers have successfully maneuvered rigs up to 39 feet, though backing into sites near curves requires patience and often a pull-forward repositioning. "The sites are close," notes Beth LeVar L., but she found the proximity manageable and returned.
The park itself provides close to 20 miles of marked hiking trails, with maps available at the information office. Mountain biking trails are more technical, with roots, rocks, and significant elevation, and some sections require driving outside the park boundary to access. Kayaking and swimming at the lake, a golf course, a lodge restaurant, and a historic chapel round out the non-camping options. Sites include picnic tables, fire rings, and grills, and three bathhouses serve the campground, one of which has coin-operated laundry.
Stæven F. notes that sites 1 through 8 are near the most updated bathrooms, while the far end of the campground suits families and groups with its playground, volleyball court, and ball diamond. Full hookups with 50-amp electric, water, and sewer are available, and a dump station serves those without sewer connections. The park is open year-round, accepts reservations, and allows pets. Campers looking for camping near Montgomery Bell will find this the most fully equipped option in the area, with The Back 40 a few miles east for a different style of stay.
