Tobyhanna State Park, managed by Pennsylvania's Bureau of State Parks, runs its campground along the eastern edge of the Pocono Mountains from the second Friday in April through the third Sunday in October. The campground sits near Tobyhanna Lake, a tannin-colored body of water that reviewers consistently describe as tea-colored rather than clear blue. Sites are spread across open terrain with tree buffers between them, though the spacing is close enough that neighbors are always visible. Campers who visited midweek or during shoulder season report noticeably more breathing room than those who came on summer weekends.
The lake is the campground's main draw. Swimmers can access a sandy beach within walking or biking distance of the sites, and a boat launch inside the campground gives paddlers direct water access. Anglers report catching bullhead catfish from the main fishing dock after dark, and reviewers recommend small rods under six feet for that stretch of water. A five-mile trail circles the entire lake, well-marked and manageable for most fitness levels. Tina notes "beachfront swimming and boat rentals, great biking and hiking trails," and the campground also includes a horseshoe pit, volleyball area, and a small playground near sites 53-56.
Bear activity is real here. Multiple reviewers were warned at check-in, and at least one camper encountered a bear while setting up a tent. Food must be stored in a locked vehicle, and the park provides dumpsters positioned away from the sites. The bathhouses draw consistent praise across years of reviews, described as clean and well-maintained, with dishwashing sinks and a family bathroom option.
The campground has electric-only hookup sites and primitive tent sites. There are no full hookup sites at most spots, though sewer and water connections are available at select sites. RVs up to 35 feet are accommodated. Pet-friendly sites are designated in a separate section, and dogs are not permitted in the non-pet areas or on the beach. Reservations are available and fill quickly for summer weekends, making advance booking important for peak-season visits. Nearby, Hemlock Campground and Cottages and Mount Pocono Campground give campers additional options in the region if Tobyhanna fills up. Book early for July and August, and consider a Tuesday-through-Thursday stay to avoid the crowding that reviewers flag on holiday weekends.
