Free and first-come, first-served, Slate Creek Campground sits along the Upper Green River in southwest Wyoming, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Sites are not formally marked, though some have fire rings and picnic tables. The campground has no registration process and enforces a 14-day stay limit. Note that pets are not permitted.
Water access drives most visits here. The Green River runs alongside the campground and gives anglers direct access to trout fishing, which multiple reviewers rate as a consistent draw. A boat launch is on-site. The habitat is open, with cottonwoods and willows lining the river corridor, and several campers have noted strong bird diversity, with dozens of species visible in a single evening. Afternoons tend to be windy, which tent campers should factor into site selection. Mosquitoes pick up near the water after dark, so bug spray is worth packing.
Compared to Weeping Rock Campground upriver, the crowd level here tends to run lighter, and sites are spread out enough that neighbors are not on top of one another. It does see regular use, especially during summer weekends, but Pam J. notes it was "fairly quiet" even with numerous campers present. Shaded sites fill first on busy days. Pit toilets are on-site and reviewers consistently describe them as cleaner than comparable facilities in the area. Cell service is available. Those planning a longer stretch in the region can browse places to camp around Kemmerer for additional staging options.
