Tie City Campground (Wy) — Medicine Bow Routt N Fs & Thunder Basin Ng

This is a quiet place to camp, and most of the sites are well placed and nice. The campsite itself was not extremely busy for a Friday night, but the nearby trailhead is extremely busy and people often drive/bicycle through the campsite.

Be warned: this campsite is above 8,000 ft. In altitude and the weather may change suddenly, especially early or late in the season. The night I was there, we had a 30 minute violent storm, complete with hail so thick you couldn’t see past the car (luckily I was in said car). Nothing was damaged, and the following morning we had blue skies and sun.

While many of the sites are reservable, there are 6 sites at this time (June 21, 2024) that are first come first served (up, from the 3 in an earlier review). This does give walk-ins a fair amount of choice.

Amazing campground with amazing views and private spots! I arrived on a Saturday afternoon and there were several spots open. By the end of the day there were still several open spots and no one around me. The views were great and lots of trees around each spot. I will definitely come back if I’m in the area again!

This is a great little campground situated right within the Happy Jack trail system. It used to be all FCFS which was great, but now some are reservable. There are 3 sites that are always FCFS now. Lovely pine forest surrounds with great recreation opportunities. You do hear a little bit of road noise from the highway which is a little suprising.

For $10 a night it’s hard to beat. There is a huge system of bike trails you can ride on. The campsite has vault toilets and a hand pump for water, but no dump stations or hose connections for your rv. The roads are super tight and have large channels that water has cut through. Big rigs might have issues.

What a great campground. Very rustic with each site having its own fore ring and table. There were plenty of flat areas for trailers but I would argue that all sites are perfect for tent camping. It appears to be a great place for those who are into mountain biking as I felt I was the odd man out since nearly everyone had one and was riding.  I really enjoyed the peace and quiet and view of the stars!

I would most certainly visit this campground again. Close to the I-80 which makes it convenient.

We had checked out three other camps in the area before trying this one. They were all full or lacked phone service which was necessary for me to submit some files.

We rolled through Tie City about 3:00 on a Friday and got the second to last spot left. It was a great spot. Not sure why it had been passed over, but we enjoyed it.

Saw two deer at the check in point. Friendly neighbors. Didn’t seem like many were “living there” like a lot of dispersed camps we drove through.

Lots of bear warnings, so we took lots of precautions. If they passed through in the night we didn’t notice.

AT&T and Verizon service were solid...actually have line of sight to a tower.

It is close to the interstate and you could hear road noise, though I didn’t notice it until after dark. Wasn’t bad for me. Didn’t cause trouble for any of us sleeping.

Upon leaving I saw some had setup camp at the overflow parking for the trail. Not sure it is intended for that, but in a pinch I guess they made do.

We decided to head out of Colorado....I know right? And we ended up here for the night! Campsites are very spacious and clean. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table.

By complete accident we were up there for the perseid meteor shower! Great open view of the sky! Thoroughly enjoyed our little escape!
