Lower Wind River Campground — Boysen State Park

My wife needed to do a business call and so we relied on all of the reviews. That said how awesome the Wi-Fi was here. Turns out that Wyoming has discontinued that service at this campground. No Wi-Fi for the people paying for sites; only the camp hosts can use it. The flies were all so terrible here. I spent lots of time in the camper because of that.

Wind River Canyon Campground is a beautiful spot tucked along the Wind River. There are no hookups, but water spigots are available throughout the campground to fill your tanks. As the name suggests, it can be very windy at times, so plan accordingly. Our site had nice shade and offered great views of both the canyon and the river. If you enjoy fly fishing, you’ll appreciate the easy river access right from the campground. It’s a peaceful, scenic place to stay— a great option if you don’t mind dry camping and want to enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Campsites are simple and flat and alongside the river, which is nice. The campground is adjacent to the road so there is some road noise, but the river drowns out a lot of that.

Nice fault, toilets, and clean sites

I was lucky to find one of the sites that did not require a reservation available (only 2 tent sites are available this way). There is no reception here so quickly making an online reservation is not an option.

This campground has spacious sites for tents. I stayed on one of the sites on the ledge just above the water. The toilets are clean and the campground host is a great guy.

At 32.25 dollars it is definitely not the cheapest state park, but the location makes it worth it.

Pros and Cons to the location of this campground: great views of the Wind River and the tunnels, but right next to the highway and not much privacy between sites due to lack of underbrush. The half of the campground closer to the tunnels is walk up only and the lower half of the campground is reservation only. The host was very nice and happy to chat as long as you wanted, which might account for the lack of mowing. While there wasn’t much privacy between sites, they were at least well shaded by the trees (which were also good trees to hang a hammock in). The vault toilets were clean and sites all had picnic tables, fire pits and grills. There are no hookups for RV’s, but there is water available at the spigots scattered around the campground. Warning: it is loud in the day and into the late evening with trucks coming down and going up the canyon. However, if you get a site next to the river it quiets things down a bit.

Lots of different options to choose from on lake or on river...my favorite is the one right next to the tunnels. Plenty of wildlife to watch come down to river in the evening or early mornings. Kids love the train that runs thru the canyon.

This is an awesome lake that is easy to get to. The campground are below the damn overlooking the wind river. They have vault toilets, playgrounds, great views and are all large enough to accommodate rvs. The lake itself is accessed about a half mile down the road. Clear water and a beautiful backdrop make this a great lake for skiing or just dropping anchor and chilling. Lots of islands to play on in this lake.
