Within the Sand Mesa Wildlife Habitat Management Area, Lake Cameahwait operates as a day-use recreation area that accommodates overnight camping around its small lake. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department manages this gravel parking area designed primarily for boat access, with several sites positioned around the water's perimeter that can handle RVs up to 34 feet.
The setup resembles a parking lot more than a traditional campground. Each area features covered picnic tables with wind barriers and grills, plus vault toilets distributed around the lake. Caius W. found "several options to choose from around the lake and they could all accommodate half a dozen vehicles if necessary." Water levels determine which sites remain accessible, as flooding occasionally affects spots closest to the shoreline.
Fishing draws many visitors to the small lake, along with swimming and kayaking opportunities. The clear water provides a washing option when potable sources aren't available. Cell coverage varies by carrier and location around the lake, with some campers reporting good Verizon service while T-Mobile remains spotty. Flying insects can be persistent during warmer months, particularly around dawn and dusk.
Access requires a 10-minute drive on paved roads from Highway 26 via Bass Lake Road, though GPS systems sometimes suggest longer gravel routes through ranch roads. The area stays busy during peak day-use hours, especially weekends when families frequent the lake. "Pit toilets & ADA accessible parking spot with ramp down to the water," notes lili G.. Nearby Freier Beach — Boysen State Park provides additional camping options along Boysen Reservoir.
Bring leveling blocks for RVs and prepare for potential manure odors from surrounding ranch operations, particularly during certain wind conditions.
