    High Cliff State Park Campground

Close to town but surrounded by nature.

This is a state run campground that provides plenty of hiking, biking and horse riding trails. There is also access to Lake Winnebago for boating and swimming. The camp sites are all either partially or fully shaded with a good amount of privacy for each site. Plenty or pit toilets are provided and there are also plumbed toilets and showers available on the campground.

This campground is perfect for a weekend getaway or for those families just starting out. It is close enough to town to be able to run in and get forgotten items. There are plenty of playground equipment for kids to run and climb on. If you are looking for a rustic get away this may not be exactly what you are looking for but it is a great spot to get out of the city for a day or two.

    High Cliff State Park Campground

    Spacious and close to trails

This was my first time camping in a Wisconsin state park and I thought it was great! Our site backed up to a trail along the cliff which was awesome for a family that loves to hike. I felt for a state park most of the sites were spacious, ours was particularly because we had no site behind us. Shower house was clean. Will be back!

    High Cliff State Park Campground

So much to do for everyone

No matter what your skill level you can find a trail here from easy to challenging to hike or bike.  There is a beach, a marina, Lake Winnebago, horse trails, hiking, biking and pet beach and picnic area.  The park is very clean and pretty.  There is a playground, several vault toilet areas spread around and a shower house.   Some sites have electric and there is a dump station and water fill up.

Both AT &T and Verizon provided good service and the ability to stream.  Spaces are large and have many  trees for shade and privacy.

    Hartman Creek State Park Campground

    Beautiful

We camped in the family campground with our 17 foot Casita travel trailer. Large private site surrounded by trees, with several options for positioning the trailer. The nearby chain of small lakes connected by narrows is ideal for kayaking. Lots of level paved roads for cycling, and wooded trails for hiking. Clean restrooms with showers.

    High Cliff State Park Campground

    Comfortable camping, lots to do

Another spacious Wisconsin State Park site. #2 is level and listed as full shade but we had enough sun to recharge our Jackery everyday. It helps that it was blue skies each day! All sites were rented for the weekend and there were just a few no-shows. Even full there wasn’t enough noise to mention. We were near the entrance and enjoyed watching all the cars and campers coming and going. The shower house was fine, a very short walk for us. The camp host was friendly and quick to clean sites. There’s single stream recycling at the dump station and they take glass! Cell reception was good enough (Visible) There’s much to do in the park and in the area. We hiked, fished, golfed, shopped and ate well from what we find. I recommend the Appleton Farmers’ Market, Dick’s Family Foods in Sherwood Nieman’s Southside Market in Appleton.

    Great Views!

It was a bit chilly to enjoy the lake unfortunately, but the hiking is amazing. There are great rock outcrops for bouldering and exploring. All over just beautiful. Definitely one of my favorites in Wisconsin!!

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Fischer Chute Pond Memorial Park offers productive fishing spots. "The fishing was great hiking trails were clean and nice. The fishing is fantastic. Even a place to ride a tube down a lazy river," reports Jeremy B.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most equestrian campgrounds in the Shawano area operate on limited schedules. Marathon County Dells of the Eau Claire Park runs from May to October. "Spring time the water is usually high and the breakup of ice happens it's amazing to see. It's crazy loud too!" explains Raechel S.

Campground amenities: Facility quality and amenities vary significantly between parks. "The campground is pretty basic nothing fancy. You get privacy from campsite to campsite which is nice," notes Raechel S. about Marathon County Dells.

Water hookup timing: Some parks delay turning on water systems until later in spring. High Cliff State Park campers report, "Only gripe is the uncertain schedule they have for turning on water for the season. First week or two of may is a safe bet, but no promises," according to Brandl B.

Weather impacts: Rainfall affects camping conditions differently across parks. Bay Shore Park experiences drainage issues with some sites. "Rain does cause many of the spots to flood," warns Celeste D., despite the otherwise "beautiful and shaded" spots.

Tips for camping with families

Between the beautiful scenery and multiple hiking trails I'd recommend it to anybody," says Steve C., though parents should note some trails involve moderate elevation changes.

Tips from RVers

Site configurations: Green's Green Acres Campground provides basic RV accommodations with electric and water. "Ok, large area," notes Robert F. regarding the RV sites, indicating sufficient space for larger rigs.

Hookup access: Bay Shore Park presents hookup challenges due to layout. "The electric and water hookups were on opposite sides of the site, and we had to keep adjusting the travel trailer to get both to actually hook up," cautions Nikki & Mike.

Ground conditions: Soil quality affects parking stability at various parks. "The ground was a sandy-dirt, which wasn't too bad at first, but after an overnight rain it was a muddy mess," reports Nikki & Mike about Bay Shore Park.

Pull-through availability: Hartman Creek State Park Campground offers limited pull-through sites. "The campsites are a good size with plenty of shade," mentions Matt S., though specific pull-through sites should be requested when making reservations.
