Just 20 miles from Richmond, Pocahontas offers boating, picnicking, camping, camping cabins, 90-plus miles of trails, and nature and history programs. The Aquatic Center, which has a toddler pool, fountain wet deck, three-foot and five-foot-deep leisure pools, an activity pool and two tubular water slides, affords seasonal water-based activities for all. Three lakes offer plenty of fishing. Boat rentals are available seasonally by the 225-acre Swift Creek Lake. The Civilian Conservation Corps Museum, dedicated to Depression-era workers who helped build the state park system, is one of a handful in the nation. Two dining halls may be rented for meetings, weddings and special events. Rustic group facilities with primitive overnight cabins (bunkhouses) are available seasonally for larger groups. The park's 2,000-seat amphitheater hosts the Pocahontas Premieres series of concerts and family-friendly entertainment. Pocahontas State Park's location and 90 miles of trails make it particularly popular among bicyclists.

          Pocahontas State Park Campground

          Lovely campground

Truly enjoyed this CG. Staff are very friendly and helpful CG is clean. Bathroom rooms are dated (compared to the ones at Twin Lakes State Park near Farmville, VA). The dump station is two-sided - helps on busy mornings when campers are leaving. Spent time touring the civil war sites around Petersburg. Lots of breweries in Richmond - a much needed place as a cold beer was very needed during the extreme heat occurring during my stay.

Just a few miles off of Interstate ninety five and u s seventeen. Within thirty minutes of fredericksburg. At this k o a everything was clean and organized. Our site was a pull through. With plenty of room side to side. In fredericksburg be sure to do the trolley tour.

Nice but Gun Range During Summer

Probably a great place to camp during the fall. During the summer they lease space to the 4-H club that teaches people to shoot black powder muskets for the civil war reenactments. From 8:30am until 3-5pm it sounds like a gun range. It’s not a shot here and there, its volleys of black powder guns (think cannons) being shot all at once. It echos off the water and is the opposite of peaceful. The ranger said it would only be for an hour a day, unless it was a competition day, well for the 5 days we were there it must have been competition. We ended up leaving the park during the day.

The sites are good. Most need lots of leveling help (bring spare wood!). The newer part has a nice bathhouse. The older part had a really old bathhouse. (So old it’s hard to tell if it’s dirty or just old.)

It’s not a bad place to visit. But combat veterans should avoid during the summer months.

The sites are nice. The ones in the newer area (laurel ridge) are close to the nice bathhouse. Both bathhouses have WiFi. No cell service to speak of. (We have Verizon but most of these places have none.)

          Camping and remote work

Like most Virginia state parks the River Bend campground is well spaced out and great for RV camping. Verizon service was stable enough to work all week with a Jetpack without the need for a directional cell booster

Red Oak Campground — James River State Park

          Camping and remote work

Nice campground in line with expectations for most Virginia state parks. Verizon service is spotty 1 to 2 bars and unreliable data but with a directional cell booster we are able to get enough signal for our Verizon Jetpack to work

          Pocahontas State Park Campground

Huge park with plenty to do!

Our site was nice and level. Covered by shade the majority of the day. Playground was decent and pretty centrally located on the campground. Firewood for sale by QR code was convenient. The trails were nice and it was a nice walk to the aquatic recreation park. Access to the aquatic park is free for campers. The bathrooms were clean but the one close to my site the outside was falling apart. Don’t know how the camp store is because it is only open Thursday to Sunday and has almost different hours every day. Overall great campground we will be going back

          Pocahontas State Park Campground

Amazing State Park close to Richmond!

This state park is amazing, it is close to the Richmond metro but allows an easy and wonderful retreat to nature. I was there in early June, and it wasnt crowded, though I can imagine it might be later in the summer. There are numerous camping options here, ranging from tent camping to RV’s to camper cabins to yurts, to regular full service glamping cabins, all in different sections. There is also an area set aside that could be rented for a group retreat or group summer camp, with groups of cabins around meeting space and dining hall area. The full service cabins are new and very upscale; the camper cabins are older but well maintained. The yurts are lovely too. I car camped in a standard site, all the campsites are wooded, shady, fairly private and well spaced. The park is huge and has lots of recreation, from miles of hiking and riding trails, biking and more. Very family friendly, with playgrounds, an incredible waterpark and pool, and nature programs at the visitor center. There is also a summer series of concerts etc in the park. Highly recommended!

Shenandoah Crossing, a Bluegreen Vacations Resort

          5 star resort doesn't complete

This resort is 5 Star in amenities. Indoor pool in the lodge, restaurant, outdoor pool connected to the indoor one. Another outdoor pool area by the general store (wasn't open yet) has a large pool and kids pool. The activities center has things going on every day. They also have a large room with a large screen that you can reserve to watch movies. There is a stable for horse riding. Also, there's miniature golf. They have cabins, yurts, and a tree house for rent. The laundry is free. Our campsite, lowest level, has a table with four chairs, two Adirondack chairs, and a propane grill. The higher level has an outdoor sink. The top level has a jacuzzi. The grounds are well designed for landscaping and kept trimmed. Now, for the cons. Our back- in site isn't level. We were told that is by design so water will flow off. Maybe. Our loop doesn't have any bathhouse, while the one next door has two. We did take a shortcut that went over a clay hill. Probably not safe if it's raining. The shower looks nice. Would stay drier if people would put the curtain inside the barrier. Shelves and benches in the showers are nice. Water pressure is mediocre to good. We're still waiting for hot water. I do say the help keeps it clean. There are sanitizer bottles left in the bathrooms and showers. Overall, it is a nice place to sit and relax.

          Twin Lakes State Park Campground

Small, quiet place with good service

Bike packed in from my house yesterday evening, camped for the night, and heading back this morning. Shower/toilet facilities are clean, good water/power, etc. This park isn’t bad for just chilling out and getting some nature time in, but there aren’t any breathtaking views and so on. Most campsites are on a very slight slope, shouldn’t have any issues if you set up right.

          Camp Cove Creek

This was the worst camping trip I’ve ever had

I am a premium DYRT member and purchased this campsite for reservation this past weekend oct. 14-15th 2023. My reservation was followed by a email giving me a confirmation and coordinates to the location I reserved. Upon viewing the coordinates it shows you at a main road with no entrance…. Skeptical but confident we showed up to the area Irish road which has no cell service and what do we know we are taken to a location that is a gravel side shoulder off of a 50mph road next to us being nothing but dumped trash and woods , no entrance for a vehicle or even a person, No trespassing signs everywhere … after driving around the area on having to back in and out on the narrow roads in order to turn around we found multiple locked gates all stating no trespassing, we then decided to contact the owner of the facility through the number and email provided we were not able to get into contact… turns out we had service the number provided was not in service at all. We got stranded and rained on with no response or proper coordinates. I wish to get my full refund and I do not recommend wasting money on this site .

          Labyrinth, Trails, and Solitude

          Quirky, Primitive but Nice

We tent camped in site #1 on Oct 7th, 2023. The online booking was easy enough through TheDyrt.com. Finding the place isn't trivial.

The campsite/farm is known as Labyrinths, Trails and Solitude...or ImaniWorks: Human Rights& Sustainable Living...Google struggled to find both of them. The address is 19362 Constitution Hwy, Orange, VA 22960

Head out of Orange, Virginia on the 20 East (Constitution Hwy), just as you pass the Orange County Airport on the left you'll pass Porter Road on the right. The next house after Porter Road, is the turn in to the Farm/Campsite (on the right side of the road).

It's quite beautiful and our hosts were great. Nice campsite. Lot's of birds singing.

I wish we could have stayed longer, the hiking and free firewood would have been great to take advantage of, but we were just overnighting.

The Good; the Bad; and the Ugly

The Good: easy reservations and check in; hard surface sites; sites mostly level; showers and bathrooms are super clean; laundry facility is clean. The Bad: limited cell service (StarLink or similar is your best option) no campfires at sites; not much for kids to do (I don’t travel with them); sometimes you hear military field training going on (live ranges, helicopters, and ospreys - but I don’t mind); must have proper government ID to access post. The Ugly: hunting season can get a little crowded. Summary: I will be back.

          Short Stay

The pictures are for sure not like the campground. I only needed one night so it wasn’t a big deal but it wasn’t maintained well at all. The volleyball courts were grown over, the basketball court had no hoops (not even the poles) and the grounds themselves weren’t well maintained. It seemed as though there were a lot of people that were permanent residents there but I wouldn’t want to actually vacation there.

There is a pool, playground, meeting room, bar and BBQ area, laundry facilities as well as shower rooms. Each site had plenty of room. Ours was a pull through and we didn't have to unhook to fit! The campground is very clean with beautiful landscaping.

          Travel

Visiting relatives in the area for a 2 night stay. We arrived just as the office was closing. Well, maybe a bit after. The office manager saw us come in and met me as I was walking up to the after hours arrival board. She was very friendly and explained the direction to our site and covered park amenities and features. The sites are plenty spacious however the hookups were near the entrance so it was very near the maximum distance for making connections. Good water pressure and reasonable wifi. The roadways are pretty narrow but the sites are angled to allow easy entry and exit. I’d certainly stay here again.
