Best Campgrounds near Ashland, VA

The Ashland, Virginia area features a mix of private RV resorts and state park campgrounds within a 30-mile radius. Americamps RV Resort, located directly in Ashland, provides full hookup sites with easy access to Interstate 95, making it popular for travelers passing through the region. Richmond North-Kings Dominion KOA in nearby Doswell offers tent sites, RV spaces, cabins, and yurts with year-round availability. State parks like Pocahontas (nearly 8,000 acres) and Powhatan provide more natural settings with both primitive and developed camping options. Most campgrounds in the region operate year-round, though amenities and activities vary seasonally.

Most private campgrounds offer online booking systems, while state parks can be reserved through Virginia's reservation portal. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the region, with Verizon providing consistent coverage at most campgrounds. As one camper noted, "Verizon service was stable enough to work all week with a Jetpack without the need for a directional cell booster." Summer humidity and heat can be intense, with temperatures regularly reaching the mid-90s. Many campers appreciate the area's strategic location between Richmond and Washington DC. According to one visitor, "Americamps is mostly surrounded by woods, has a seasonal pool, a clean bathhouse, a nice camp store, propane for sale AND is walking distance to a local brewery that often has live music or events on the weekends." State parks receive high marks for their recreational opportunities, with Pocahontas State Park offering extensive mountain biking trails, fishing at Swift Creek Lake, and an aquatic recreation center. Primitive camping options exist at Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area, where Virginia residents with a valid fishing or hunting license can camp for up to 14 days at no additional cost. Shade availability varies significantly between campgrounds and even between loops within the same park.

    Lake Anna State Park Campground

    Nice space

Great space for rvs and tents. Cabins and yurts available, bath house clean, but toilet paper is thinner than dry onion skin. Beach area is 1/2 mile paved walk. Beach very crowded on weekends.

    Aquia Pines Campground

Good stopover near the highway but hidden between the trees

We where forced land-inwards because of tropical storm Erin (potential hurricane hitting the Outer Banks). So we decided to visit Washington DC and had a stopover here. It was conveniently located. Terrain is not flat but our spot was well levelled. There is a big dog (and an older gentleman) in the office to welcome you. Full hook up was oké and our spot was nicly secluded between the trees.

    Christopher Run Campground

Very big, a little rough- no internet

This is a big campground that caters to boaters on Lake Anna. We probably made a mistake coming on a holiday weekend. Many “holiday” campers with extra vehicles, boats and people! The sites are good size, but not very level. We did finally get ours squared away. Mostly wooded, with shade. Our site D9, backed up to a small wooded section. Some full hookups. Tent sites, numerous semi-permanent people. Showers and bathrooms are clean, hot water, but it’s timed, so you have to keep pushing their buttons to continue a shower. They have everyone sign a waiver to release them of liabilities. Never had anyone do that before. Playground, beach, mini golf, canoe rental, boat slips, laundry, convenience store. NO INTERNET

    Cozy Acres Campground RV Resort

    cute - family oriented

only planned on staying a night but ended up staying for two.

had the most unique store filled with actual tools/useful equipment and ANTIQUES!! so cute and LOVED the game room - definitely the best options we’ve seen so far HOWEVER it closed the same time as store hours so timing was extremely awkward.

bathhouses appeared super nice at first but were filled with water by the end of the day - absolutely disgusting to stand in other people’s shower water. water pressure was also insane haha.

defo family oriented …. super friendly though.

also have to call to book

very friendly camp hosts!! helped us avoid hurricane erin

South Forty RV Resort & Campground

    Great overnight spot

Perfect location right off of I-95. Spot we had was spacious and easy to get in and out of. I arrived after hours, but had my reservation hanging on the wall for me. Ground was pretty level and hookup was easy. We only stayed overnight, as we continued farther south. The bathrooms were clean and there was a friendly maintenance guy who offered to take our garbage to the dumpster for us. It was “part of the treatment” he said. Gotta love that Southern Hospitality. Will definitely stop here again as I make this trip quite often.

    Picture Lake Campground

    Wonderful place

We absolutely loved this park. We came here to dive at Lake Phoenix (they have a no pet policy this year) and have our pup with us. The staff was so nice. We were close to the front. They have full hookups. The sewage was a little weird to hookup but we figured it out. They have a bathhouse (we didn't use) a nice pool, laundry facilities, a little store, and trash in the back. The lake is beautiful and this was close to a lot of things. The front spot is are fully paved and require minimal leveling
