      Montebello Resort

      Narrow Outdoors

Cool campground in a remote part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As such, very little phone service and lots of narrow, winding roads. Plenty of hikes and several interesting little towns within 30 minutes. I thought it was an interesting mix! We had a power outage during our visit, which also eliminates water access at this site. I was grateful to have an inverter to keep us online since there is zero AT&T service. I had a pull-through site and I'm not certain that I could have made the exit if the campers ahead of me didn't leave.

Riverside Campground — Watoga State Park

      Almost Heaven

Bathrooms clean and spacious enough. Campsites close enough to access what water, trash, and other needs with still allowing for some privacy. The front has laundry, ice, firewood and tends to most needs. Dark skies and deer wandering around make for a peaceful and nice experience overall.

      Seneca State Forest

A quiet and peaceful little campground amongst the tall trees

What a delight to rest here for two nights! The park is small (10 campsites, I think) and blanketed by a lovely green canopy. Amenities are few, but the nearby showers are clean, with hot water and electricity, and fresh water is available on site by a hand pumped cistern. The office and maintenance headquarters are also nearby, and the folks in the office are friendly and welcoming. I’ll visit here again!

      Fun Time

Enjoyed the campground, even during the storm. Disappointed the river was dry, but we enjoyed the pool! I wish there were more activities for children when the river is dry.

Beaver Creek Campground — Watoga State Park

      5 nights in July

I camp at beaver creek campground yearly and have for the past 5 years. This past year they have built new family bathroom facilities, and a new playground. The nature, beauty and stars at night are unmatched.

    Guide to Millboro

Douthat State Park and surrounding areas in the Millboro, Virginia region offer diverse camping options year-round. Located in Virginia's Alleghany County at approximately 1,400 feet elevation, the area experiences mild summers with average temperatures between 75-85°F and cool fall nights that can drop into the 40s. Winter camping remains available at select locations with temperatures often dipping below freezing from December through February.

    What to Do

Hiking trails with elevation gain: Bolar Mountain Recreation Area offers excellent trail options with varied difficulty levels. "This place is amazing. I could stay here every weekend and not get tired of it. Warm water, fresh air, no service," notes one camper about the Bolar Mountain Recreation Area.

Trout fishing opportunities: The streams and lakes throughout the region are regularly stocked with rainbow trout. "It's $8 a day for a fishing pass and you can rent John boats or kayaks here as well. In season the lake and creek are stocked with plenty of Rainbow trout. You can keep them for dinner if you like!" according to a visitor at Douthat State Park Campground.

Mountain biking adventures: The region offers challenging terrain for cyclists of all levels. "We did a decent amount of biking here, the main road is nice for road biking, we rode out about 15 miles and back, saw a black bear. Beautiful country roads. And the trails are great for mountain biking. Bring your legs, lots of climbing!"

    What Campers Like

Secluded yurt sites: Yurt camping near Millboro, Virginia provides unique accommodations with woodland privacy. At Crabtree Falls Campground, "The owner was very helpful and was able to get us a site last minute. The site backed up to a creek that created natural flowing water that we enjoyed wading through. The bath house was well maintained and super clean."

Off-grid experiences: Many campers appreciate the limited connectivity. "This is a great camp located near lake Moomaw! Right off the road with easy access to the sites. Cool foggy mornings and nice dark nights out here," shares a reviewer about Morris Hill Campground.

Lakeside camping options: Sites near water are among the most popular. "Spent a relaxing long weekend at Lake Moomaw's Bolar Mountain Campground. Our camp hosts were friendly and very helpful. The views were amazing and beautiful. I can't wait to go back again, we loved it."

    What You Should Know

Campground layouts vary significantly: Some campgrounds have closely packed sites while others offer more privacy. "Douthat is really four separate campgrounds. Three of them are located near the lake. White Oak Campground is larger, wooded, and has a significant elevation change between different sites. Caution should be used with large rigs as the low-water bridge has steep approach and departure angles."

Weather preparedness essential: Mountain weather can change rapidly, even in summer. At Montebello Resort, "The location is awesome; close to some great hiking spots, very accessible & well laid out. Call and speak with the staff about the best dates to go. They helped us pick a day when there were NO other people there."
