Swinging Bridge Equestrian Campground

Within BLM Land managed by the Price Field Office, Swinging Bridge Equestrian Campground provides horse-friendly camping along a creek in a deep canyon setting. This established campground features six large sites, each equipped with green steel corrals, vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings. The hard gravel roads make access manageable for larger rigs.

The campground sits near the river with swimming holes and mature trees suitable for hammocking. Matthew H. notes the approach "sets the mood for the epic adventure of sleeping down by the river and surrounded by massive rock walls." Sites are fairly open, so campers can hear neighboring conversations, and wind conditions may require secure tent tie-downs.

Campers must pack in water for both humans and horses, as no potable water is available on-site. The campground operates on a pack-in, pack-out basis with no trash service despite being listed in amenities. Cell service is limited to nonexistent in this canyon location. The $15 nightly fee allows up to two vehicles and ten people per site, with discounts available for pass holders.

For a similar riverside experience without equestrian facilities, Swinging Bridge South Campground sits just 0.2 miles southwest.

Visitors often highlighted the scenic riverside location with large sites and basic amenities. A common theme was the lack of water and trash services requiring self-sufficiency planning.

Beautiful 360º Views Next to the San Rafael River

We stayed this weekend (early May 2021) at the Swinging Bridge South Campground and had a great time. The campground includes:

  • Tent pads at every site
  • Plenty of space to pull up in one's vehicle
  • Accessible unisex pit toilet
  • Picnic tables at every site
  • Metal fire rings

The cost is $15 per night with a limit to 2 vehicles per site and up to 10 people per site, with half-price discounts for National Parks/Interagency Passes. There are neither trash receptacles on-site nor potable water, so plan to pack in/pack out.

This dog-friendly BLM campground made a great home base for adventuring in the Buckhorn Wash and Little Grand Canyon overlook area. There was minimal road noise at night, though you can hear neighboring campers since it's a fairly open campground. On our night it was rather windy so plan to bring strong tie-downs for your ground tent if you plan to use the tent pads.
