Bureau of Land Management's Moab Field Office oversees Hal Canyon Campground, an 11-site facility positioned along Utah State Route 128 beside the Colorado River. The campground sits tucked behind vegetation that screens it from road view, unlike many other riverside sites along this corridor.
Most sites accommodate tents and small RVs up to about 24 feet, though larger rigs risk scraping bottom on the uneven terrain. Sites 2 and 3 offer the best shade under scrub oak clusters and provide easier river access for launching watercraft. Anita C. notes "lots of trees for privacy, most campgrounds are beside the Colorado river (but no direct water access)." Site 11 sits closest to the water, while site 1 lacks shade entirely.
The Colorado River flows directly adjacent to camp, making this a popular launch point for paddlers and rafters. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilets and trash service available. Cell coverage remains spotty without a signal booster. The location provides quick access to Arches National Park and Canyonlands, both roughly 15-20 minutes away by vehicle.
Sites fill rapidly on a first-come, first-served basis, particularly during peak seasons when all spots may be occupied by mid-morning. Adam T. recommends arriving early: "Really lucked out at Hal Canyon, grabbed a shady site around 11am as sites were turning over." Traffic noise from Route 128 diminishes significantly after 8 PM.
For additional camping options in the region, explore campgrounds around BLM Land — Moab Field Office. The nearby Oak Grove Campground sits just 0.1 miles north along the same river corridor.
