Highway 128 winds through red rock country, and Drinks Canyon Camping Area sits directly alongside this scenic route with the Colorado River flowing just beyond the campsites. This Bureau of Land Management campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis, with all nine sites positioned between the road and the riverbank.
The proximity to Highway 128 creates a trade-off that defines the camping experience here. Traffic noise occurs during daylight hours as vehicles navigate the curvy, low-speed-limit road, but Chandler notes "there isn't a ton of traffic at night." Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with some spots offering more space while others at the end cluster closer together. The open views toward the Colorado River and surrounding red rock formations provide the visual payoff that draws campers despite the road noise.
Campers can access the Colorado River directly from the sites, with swimming possible during warmer months. The location serves as a convenient base for exploring Arches National Park and Canyonlands, both within easy driving distance. Nick found the area "full each night" during his stay, with the best chances for securing a site coming "early morning and early afternoon."
The campground operates without water, electricity, or trash service. Dexter I. advises campers to "be prepared campground has no water or trash service." One vault toilet serves the area. Cell service requires a booster for marginal coverage. Sites accommodate RVs up to 24 feet, though some can handle slightly larger rigs. Campers often resupply in Moab or obtain water at nearby Lions Park.
This riverside location works well for campers who prioritize Colorado River access and don't mind road noise during the day. The $20 nightly fee drops to half-price for holders of federal recreation passes.
