Sitting just 6 miles east of Moab along Highway 128, Drinks Canyon Campground runs $10 to $20 per night and fills on a first-come, first-served basis. Sites are compact, set between the Colorado River and the road, and the campground has no on-site water, so arriving with a full supply is essential, especially in summer when temperatures climb sharply. A pit toilet is on-site, and each site includes a picnic table and metal fire ring.
Proximity to the highway is the defining trade-off here. Multiple reviewers flag consistent road noise during the day, and late arrivals driving through in search of open spots can extend the disruption into the evening. That said, David S. notes it's "close to the road but after night fall it's quiet." Sites closer to the river tend to buffer some of that noise and give direct sightlines toward the red rock canyon walls above the Colorado. The campground has no shade to speak of, which amplifies the heat midday.
Access to the river is a consistent draw. Short social trails connect the sites to the water's edge, and a small beach nearby is walkable from camp, suitable for swimming. The star visibility at night gets strong marks from multiple visitors. Campers who want more separation from the highway can look at Hal Canyon Campground or Oak Grove Campground, both a short distance northeast along the same corridor. Drinks Canyon Camping Area is also nearby to the southwest.
Crowd pressure is real, particularly in September and October. "I arrived in time to get a space," notes Frank M., "many others left disappointed." Arriving by mid-morning on weekdays gives the best odds of securing a site. The location makes it a functional base for day trips into Arches and Canyonlands, with Moab about 15 minutes away for resupply. This campground suits campers who prioritize river access and proximity to Moab over quiet or shade.
