Gooseberry Mesa

Part of the Bureau of Land Management's St. George Field Office area, Gooseberry Mesa provides dispersed camping accessible by passenger vehicle with careful driving. Campers can drive several hundred feet from the trailhead before encountering rocky terrain that requires higher ground clearance to continue further up the track.

The camping area features multiple fire pits at different elevations along the access track, with some sites offering partial shade from small trees during morning hours. Sand covers much of the ground and tends to stick to shoes and gear. An outhouse sits at the nearby bike trailhead, and the area serves mountain bikers exploring the mesa's trail system. Cell service reaches the camping area, and the remote location provides dark skies when the moon isn't full. For different terrain, Gooseberry Mesa BLM Dispersed near Virgin sits less than a mile north.

Disperced site with mountain views

We drove a few hundred feet from the trailhead and turned to a small track offroad. We made it a goos distance on our sedan before the track got too rocky for us to continue. The spot we made it to, had two firepits close to eachother and if you choose your spot wisely, small trees can provide shade from the morning hours sun. From our place you could see the moon and then 8h later the sun rise from behind the mountains. If it hadn't been such a full moon, we would've seen the stars as there were no other sources of light polluting the nightsky. A 100ft up the track we found more firepits and an even more beautiful spot where you are in full view of the mountains upfront where as at our spot some trees were limiting the view. You would need a vehicle with around 12 inch ground clearance to get over the terrain on the track. Even though we didnt sleep there, the 2min walk was worth the views. There was no disturbance during the night, I heard one vehicle in the morning but it didn't come down the track we were on. There are plenty of campspots just a short walk from the trailhead bathroom if emergency strikes. My only downside would be sand that sticks to your shoes and will dirty everything it gets the chance to. Would camp here again!
