Buckboard Wash - Dispersed

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Accessible via a rough dirt road that rewards slow driving, Buckboard Wash Dispersed sits along the Wyoming shore of Flaming Gorge Reservoir within the camping near Flaming Gorge Reservoir National Recreation Area. The area has no assigned sites. Campers simply drive around until they find open ground, and with roughly 100 spots spread across bluffs and shoreline, there's generally room to put some distance between yourself and neighboring rigs, even on busy summer weekends.

Water access is the main draw. Paddleboarders and kayakers can launch directly from shore, and the reservoir is clear enough that swimming is a regular activity in the heat of the day. Fishing from the bank is also common. No shade trees exist here, so a canopy or tarp is worth bringing. Wind picks up during the day and can be significant, though campers report it tends to settle after dark. One vault toilet is on-site, stocked but dependent on other visitors leaving it clean.

A few practical notes worth knowing before you arrive: the road is rough but manageable for low-clearance vehicles driven carefully, at least one reviewer confirmed it in a Subaru Impreza. AT&T users have reported three bars of 4G signal. Mosquitoes and spiders are present, with spiders notably active overnight, coating gear by morning. Campfires are permitted, and dogs are welcome. Nearby alternatives include Buckboard Marina RV for those wanting hookups, or Flaming Gorge NRA Dispersed for more of the same free-range setup.

Come prepared for sun, wind, and wildlife, and this stretch of reservoir shoreline will hold up for a couple of nights.

Great views

We had the place to ourselves on a Monday in early May. We chose the bluff near the northern of two out toilets. We had a 270⁰ view of the lake, an awesome sunset and an equally spectacular sunrise ( at least what I could see from the tent). Windy during the day but calm at night

Wonderful two nights

I stayed for two nights & it was very peaceful. There’s one vault toilet (no other services) & it was stocked but other campers decided to dump two bags of trash there so it got dirty. there was probably 30 other campers during my stay but there’s so much space, we weren’t close to each other. Easily 100 spots to pick from, on and off water. Water is beautiful & enjoyed it with the pup. Would definitely stay again! I had 3 bars of 4G AT&T. Gorge area is beautiful. Be careful coming in as the road is rough but just take it slow and you’ll make it just fine!

Dispersed campsites by a reservoir

Those are nice dispersed campgrounds.  Although there were quite a few RVs while I was there, I managed to find a spot for myself with a great view on the reservoir.  It seems to be quite popular.  (Driving a subaru impreza hatchback with 5.1 inches ground clearance.)

Beautiful and great for rockhounds!

First, I will start with this... there are spiders. Like a lot of them. They set up all over everything overnight and it takes about two hours to get them off of everything the next morning. If you hate spiders do not come here because it is kind of nightmarish. We only stayed two nights because after the third morning I couldn’t deal with the spiders anymore.

The reservoir is gorgeous and clear. It looks so sapphire blue during the day. The weather was perfect. Hot during the day so the cold water felt amazing and cool enough at night to have amazing beach fires. Wind can be brutal. No shade so make sure you have a canopy. So many sites all over the area you just need to drive around to find one away from sooo many people. Public restrooms too but moths live in them which is just about as nightmarish as the spiders.

Good for a couple of days.

Beautiful

Great dispersed camping. Beautiful views and we were able to launch our paddle board right from the shore. Homemade fire pits worked well.

Decent

Not bad, lake side and junk, people and their boats can be annoying, but it’s decent fishing and stuff. We just hung out and fished, swam, and kayaked!
