Accessible via a rough dirt road that rewards slow driving, Buckboard Wash Dispersed sits along the Wyoming shore of Flaming Gorge Reservoir within the camping near Flaming Gorge Reservoir National Recreation Area. The area has no assigned sites. Campers simply drive around until they find open ground, and with roughly 100 spots spread across bluffs and shoreline, there's generally room to put some distance between yourself and neighboring rigs, even on busy summer weekends.
Water access is the main draw. Paddleboarders and kayakers can launch directly from shore, and the reservoir is clear enough that swimming is a regular activity in the heat of the day. Fishing from the bank is also common. No shade trees exist here, so a canopy or tarp is worth bringing. Wind picks up during the day and can be significant, though campers report it tends to settle after dark. One vault toilet is on-site, stocked but dependent on other visitors leaving it clean.
A few practical notes worth knowing before you arrive: the road is rough but manageable for low-clearance vehicles driven carefully, at least one reviewer confirmed it in a Subaru Impreza. AT&T users have reported three bars of 4G signal. Mosquitoes and spiders are present, with spiders notably active overnight, coating gear by morning. Campfires are permitted, and dogs are welcome. Come prepared for sun, wind, and wildlife, and this stretch of reservoir shoreline will hold up for a couple of nights.
