Spring Creek Road leads campers along a dirt route into Ashley National Forest, where dispersed sites spread across grassy areas near Flaming Gorge's shoreline. The access road extends a couple miles from the main route, manageable for most vehicles including sedans when conditions are dry, though the surface can become more challenging during wet weather.
Multiple camping spots feature established fire rings scattered throughout the area, with some sites positioned directly at the water's edge. Chris E. found a spot "right in the edge of the water" during a September visit, noting the privacy between sites despite other campers being present. The peninsula area offers sites surrounded by water on three sides, though wind exposure increases in this location.
Flaming Gorge provides direct access for kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming, with campers launching watercraft steps from their sites. Early morning fishing produces results according to multiple visitors, while afternoon winds can make paddling more difficult. Wakeboarding and water skiing activity occurs regularly during busier periods. The area supports large RVs alongside smaller vehicles, with level parking available at most sites.
Cattle graze throughout the area, leaving evidence campers should watch for when walking with dogs. Cell coverage varies by carrier, with Verizon users reporting full LTE signal strength sufficient for calls and basic internet, while AT&T also provides service. Lani R. warns about midges, describing them as "mosquito's harmless doppelgangers, but there are A LOT of them." Mid-October visits encounter fewer insects and crowds, with some campers finding the area entirely to themselves.
The campground works well for RV users seeking lakefront access and groups wanting water-based recreation without reservation requirements.

As one of the most aptly named landscapes in the country, the vast scenery of Flaming Gorge may not fit into your camera.
The Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area (NRA) is centered long the 91-mile section of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir and a rugged section of the Green River. The mix of climate and topography provide year-round recreation. The southern part includes colorful, narrow canyons, and conifer forests; the northern part is surrounded by high sagebrush deserts and rock mesas. Campgrounds, lodges, marinas, boat launches, swimming beaches, fishing areas, and hiking/ski trails are available along the 360 miles of shoreline and tucked into mountain retreats. Close at hand are the quaint communities of Manila, Green River, and Dutch John, which have accommodations and other services.
