Within Sawtooth National Forest, Steer Basin Campground sits along Rock Creek Road in the South Hills region. This US Forest Service site features about five campsites positioned directly beside Rock Creek, where campers can fish and access the water for cooling off. The $5-per-night campground includes vault toilets, drinking water, and metal fire rings with picnic tables at each site.
Road noise from Rock Creek Road reaches the campsites throughout the day. The creek runs low enough during warmer months for safe wading, even with children. Basalt cliffs surround the area, though they remain undeveloped for climbing. Sites fill quickly on weekends, so weekday visits offer better availability for securing a spot.

This location is available on a first-come, first-served basis only. Visitors are required to physically arrive at the campground to purchase and claim a site. Once on-site, you may be able to pay for your campsite(s) by scanning a QR code using the Recreation.gov mobile app, and the Scan and Pay feature. If this option is available, you will need to first download the free Recreation.gov mobile app https://www.recreation.gov/mobile-app prior to your arrival as some remote areas have limited or no cellular service.
