Golfers and families find a compact state park experience at Lockhart State Park Campground, where a nine-hole golf course shares space with 20 campsites arranged in two small loops. The full hookup sites back up to the golf course, while water and electric sites occupy a separate area. Napunani notes the campground stays "very quiet in December" with no highway or train noise disrupting the atmosphere.
The wagon wheel configuration of sites means minimal privacy between neighbors, with fire rings positioned in ways that sometimes confuse campers about which belongs to their site. Each campsite includes a covered picnic table, metal fire ring, and barrel smoker, though firewood isn't available for purchase on-site. Water pressure fluctuates throughout the day, and cell service proves spotty with AT&T showing only one bar. The single bathhouse serves all campers plus day users, featuring one shower each for men and women.
Short hiking trails wind through the park alongside Clear Fork Creek, where visitors can fish or simply enjoy the running water. The swimming pool provides relief during hot Texas summers, while the golf course offers discounted rates for state park pass holders. Most trails measure less than half a mile, making this better suited for leisurely walks than serious hiking. Fire ants present a seasonal concern at some sites.
Access roads can be rough, and the park's location just outside Lockhart puts campers within easy reach of the town's famous barbecue joints. Sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, though the spaces aren't particularly deep and some slope backward. Reservations open 123 days in advance without additional fees.
This works best for RV travelers seeking a convenient overnight stop with golf access, or families wanting a simple base camp near renowned Texas barbecue rather than extensive outdoor recreation.
