Fore!

Lockhart State Park

So first the best, in my opinion, thing about Lockhart SP; it’s a few miles from Lockhart City where there is some DELICIOUS food!! Smitty’s is my favorite! I will actually travel HOURS off my driving route to stop by!

So…back to the Lockhart State Park. If you golf you will love Lockhart. Don’t get me wrong there are a few trails and historical CCC things to explore, but it seemed to me the golf was the main focus. There’s also a cement pond to relax around. The campground was adequate, roofed picnic areas and grills at each site. Not much in the way of shade. On the up side you won’t get lost in the camping area. The showerhouse was well maintained and small. The staff , the ones I met, were also adequate.

Did I mention the nearby EXCELLENT food?

Very quiet in December. No highway or train noise.

Great night sky viewing from park golf course.

NO STREET LIGHTS in campground., but toilet facilities had exterior lighting.

Campsite had cooking grill on metal fire ring and barrel BBQ smoker.

Campsite had metal cover over picnic table.

Level site #7.

Grass mowed throughout campsites.

Ample supply of TP, soap and hand towels in toilet facility.

Nice view of Golf Course from FHU campground.

Cons

FHU sites in wagon wheel configuration. Absolutely no privacy from other sites. Campsite fire rings placed weirdly which created confusion between campers as to which fire ring belong to which campsite.

Water pressure fluctuations constantly.

Never saw any park rangers or park security driving through campground; no interaction with Park Hosts.

No security gate closed overnight. L

imited Shade. Seems each FHU site had one tree.

One toilet facility for 20 campsites PLUS day users, except for pool users. One shower only in each Men’s and Women’s.

Campsite #7 full of fire ants!

No campfire wood for sale.

Cheap Golf

We were here 2/8/21 to 2/13/21. We had 2 decent days and then the bad weather began. We golfed 18 one of the days, fun layout, not in the best shape right now but the price was right. With the Texas pass you also get a discount on golf and anything else you buy. Lots of short trails, close to town. Our loop had power and water at the sites. It was pretty quiet due to impending horrible weather.

Small park close to town and be sure to get some BBQ, lots of choices in town!

NiSmall Park on Golf Course

We stayed here for a 2 day travel stop. Clean, well maintained park with only 10 full hookup sites and 10 water/electric sites. Full hookup sites back up to a golf course. One bath house that is very clean. Our site was perfectly level. All sites have a covered picnic table and asphalt parking pads. There is some shade at nearly every site. Verizon signal is weak and non existent on the trails. We got around 60 hdtv channels with excellent signal. The sites are very close together and there is no privacy. That’s the reason I give this place only 3 stars.

Nice small park

This is the Lockhart state park and you can reserve online through the state park site. Check in is simple and easy access. There are 2 small loops for RV’s each with about 10 sites. One loop is full hookups with 50amp and the other is water&electric only with much smaller sites. We are pulling a 35’ 5th wheel and fit ok but the sites are not deep. The sites are also not super level and our site #2 sloped back. Decent hiking trails and a creek with fish runs through the park. There is also a 9hole golf course too.

Relaxing and fun but small!

This campground is located in my home county. We enjoy this park a lot though it is quite small so you can hike the trails and "see the sites" within the day. Really nice location though tucked away in a quiet part of the county!

BBQ and golf!

So everyone knows that Lockhart has some of the best BBQ in Texas, but it is a lot more than that. Lockhart State park is a fairly small park, but it still has quite a bit to offer. If you are a hiker or a biker, this may not be the best for you, seeing as the most of the trails are less than half a mile long. But if you are just looking to get away, this is a great place.

They have a nice little swimming pool on site that is great for kiddos to enjoy, and they have quite a few places you can fish throughout the park. Then about half the park is for golfing, which is great news for the dad of the family. The short trails are nice a scenic with a lot of running creeks and streams throughout the park.

There are tent and RV sites, along with a group recreation hall and dining hall. Seeing as I love to hike, this is not my go to place, but I find it great for a day trip.

My family and I love to grab some BBQ at Smitty’s, Black’s, or Kruez Market about 6 miles down the road and then find a nice picnic table by the water to chow down. Plus you can take a leisurely walk to burn off all those calories when you’re done! Lockhart is located about thirty minutes from the Austin/San Marcos area, so if you’re in the neighborhood check it out! It is also about thirty miles from Bastrop and Buesher State Park which also have a lot to offer with amazing trails, wildlife, and views!

Lockhart State Park + Family Activities + BBQ

Lockhart State Park is a small park with simple facilities, but they do have a golf course and some of the best BBQ in Texas nearby.

The park is located a short distance from the town of Lockhart and about 40 minutes from Austin. The park has all the basic amenities like campsites with water, electricity, picnic tables, grills and fire rings. There are a few short trails to explore. For the family there is a swimming pool and little playground. Perhaps one of the unique features of this park is that there is a 9 hole golf course within the park.

Some of the facilities feel a bit dated. However, if you're looking for a relaxing time with family friendly activities this park might work for you.

Before or after your stay at Lockhart State Park be sure to pass through the town of Lockhart (nicknamed the BBQ Capitol of Texas) where you can choose between three of the best barbecue restaurants in Texas - Blacks BBQ, Smitty's BBQ and Kreuzs BBQ.

Golfing & swimming

You can golf here and swim in the public pool. The trails are surprisingly nice, even though the park itself is on the small side. You can spend a nice day here. There's a wild rose area. The creek could use a better crossing at one spot from one trail to another, but it's passable in low water times. Go into town and have some BBQ.

abundance of fireflies

A state park with a 9 hole golf course?!? What a unique find! There was also a pool and a couple nature trails. The campground was pretty average, not much privacy or space between sites but some sites did overlook the little creek. A fun little part of the trip was the HUGE amount of fireflies we saw- very cool! Simple park with a couple unique features- seems like it would be a great place for a family gathering.
