Tent camping options near Mission, Texas are limited but include Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, which offers primitive walk-in tent sites. The park operates year-round and serves as a significant destination for birdwatching enthusiasts, particularly during winter months. Tent campers should note that the park has transitioned from offering full RV accommodations to focusing exclusively on primitive hike-in tent camping experiences.

The primitive tent sites at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park require campers to hike approximately 0.3 miles from the nearest bathroom facilities. Electric hookups are available at some locations, though drinking water access may be limited. The park permits fires and provides picnic tables at designated areas. Pets are allowed, making this an option for campers traveling with animals. Reservations are recommended, especially during the peak winter season from November through February when birdwatching opportunities are optimal and winter visitors increase park usage.

Trails throughout the park offer shaded hiking experiences even on hot days. According to one visitor, "the trees surrounding the trails made the experience beautiful," providing natural cooling for tent campers exploring the area. Wildlife sightings are common, with visitors reporting turkey encounters and numerous bird species. Twin Lakes Park represents another potential tent camping option in Mission, though it offers fewer amenities with only basic toilet facilities and water hookups available. The park allows pets but lacks many standard campground features such as picnic tables, showers, or reservable sites. Birdwatchers particularly value Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park during winter months when, as one camper noted, "birds are easy to spot and winter Texans are in."

Split Rail RV Park & Resort 55+

      Ancient poorly maintained park

Park opened 1978. Original plumbing that has broken 6 times or more this season. Electrical system the same. Very few 50 amp plugins. Owner refuses to upgrade to standard 50/30/120 boxes. Outages and glitches often. Pipes very corroded. Few lawns are watered, most dead. Many vacant, poorly maintained units. Many owners aging out and units pulled. Photos posted on their site are from many years ago. Makes it look like park is vibrant and thriving when in reality, it's dying.

Restrooms have NO A/C! It's 100° in Rio Grand Valley from March through Sep/Oct. Owner refuses to spend the money to install A/C. Hot tub pump was out over a month. Several thefts and attempted thefts. No secure gate or security. Thieves drive right in or walkin and help themselves. Few working cameras.

It's cheap, but cheap in many ways. Beware!

AmeriCana The Birding Center RV Resort

      Friendly and Quaint

This is a retiree/snowbird community with a mix of "permanent" campers and passersthrough. The people and staff are very friendly. There is a bird watching trail attached. Local Mexican food is amazing.

      Lazy Palm Ranch

Very nice campground with full hook ups

Excellent weather here $360 a month including electric and that’s a full hook up with sewer house great amenities even the hot tub was up and going. Only downside is a half hour drive to buy anything. like food.🤪 very good people in the office here already considering coming back next winter also they have a good laundry facility February 7 they brought in 30 some construction workers. This entire place has gone to hell. They cranked their trucks up at 5 AM but don’t leave till quarter till six constant noise until they leave and then they come back about 630 or seven continuously making noise till 1130 or midnight. They drive through the park like they don’t know where the road is I can’t wait to leave and I doubt now I will ever come back. This part claimed to be 50+, but there’s full of 20 year-old punks not to mention the wild boys on there damn Harley’s day and night vroom vroom

Great little spot in Palmview TX. Under new management the staff is thriving to improve the landscape and amenities. Well maintained park with 150 sites, a pool and clubhouse, and events happening every weekend to keep you busy. Great place to relax.

      Lazy Palm Ranch

All in all a good quiet place to stay

The campground is located about 1 1/2 miles off the main highway. It is quiet. The help is friendly helpful if they would clean up, the grass burns and the stickers it would be a very nice place to stay, but it’s hard to get out of your camper and walk around because your feet load up with stickers the dogs cannot walk because of the stickers and I mean a lot of stickers

Tropical Trail Mobile Home & RV Park

      Not so Great

All considering this park needs a lot and is neglected and over rated. Stayed her for a week based on reviews and is not what we expected. First the park is in the middle of no where and I mean no where. Nothing within biking distance or walking distance, the winds are non stop windy. The grass is still, well there isn’t any nor do they water to grow any, was all weeds which they don’t keep trimmed or cut. Dust and dirt in the trailer everyday. The water is incredibly hard and stains everything. The pool(only 1 pool for the size of this park) get full quick. If you don’t have your seat or chair by 9am bring your own. Oh yah, though they do offer good rates on gold carts, you will need it because it’s a long drive to the pool. There is also a daily resort fee per person for whatever reason they tack onto your bill. The park is way over rated and way over priced considering all the conditions I listed. And the funny part of this, if you go to there website they claim it’s a 9.5 star according to good sams reviews, yet when you go to good sams reviews to look up there park it isn’t listed. Definitely don’t recommend this park nor will we ever return.

    Guide to Mission

Tent camping near Mission, Texas centers primarily on Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, located in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. This region experiences mild winters with average temperatures between 60-75°F and hot summers often exceeding 95°F. The valley's ecosystem features thornscrub vegetation and riparian forests, creating a distinctive camping environment despite the limited options available in the immediate area.

    What to do

Birding opportunities: Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park features multiple bird blinds strategically placed throughout the grounds. The park serves as a critical habitat for local and migrating species. One visitor noted, "Interesting park. Used to be a full RV campground but has limited camping to hike-in primitive only."

Wildlife observation: Trail systems provide access to various habitats where campers can spot native wildlife. The park maintains observation areas specifically for wildlife viewing. According to a camper, "We saw a turkey too!" while exploring the grounds during their visit.

Seasonal hiking: Trails remain accessible year-round but are most comfortable during winter months. Summer hikers should plan for early morning or evening treks to avoid peak temperatures. A reviewer mentioned, "I went on a hot day but the trees surrounding the trails made the experience beautiful!"

    What campers like

Shade coverage: The mature tree canopy throughout Twin Lakes Park provides natural cooling even during hot weather. The shade makes summer camping more manageable despite South Texas heat. Campers particularly appreciate the cooling effect of trees when temperatures climb above 90°F.

Simple setup: The primitive camping requires minimal equipment and setup time. With sites accessible via short hike-in trails, tent campers can establish their base quickly. The straightforward layout allows for efficient camp organization.

Natural immersion: The lack of developed facilities creates a more immersive outdoor experience. Without extensive infrastructure, campers report feeling closer to the natural environment. The primitive setup appeals to those seeking a more authentic outdoor experience rather than amenity-heavy camping.

    What you should know

Limited facilities: Primitive tent sites require self-sufficiency. Campers must pack in essential supplies as amenities are minimal. Tent sites at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park require walking approximately 0.3 miles from bathroom facilities.

Weather considerations: Summer camping requires heat management strategies. The region experiences temperatures regularly exceeding 95°F between May and September with high humidity. Winter brings milder temperatures but occasional cold fronts can drop temperatures into the 40s.

Water planning: Water access is restricted at primitive sites. Campers need to bring sufficient drinking water or plan regular trips to water stations. During summer months, higher water consumption requires additional planning and carrying capacity.

    Tips for camping with families

Trail accessibility: Most paths are relatively flat and manageable for children. Shorter loop trails provide good options for families with younger kids. The main trails offer frequent shade breaks which helps when hiking with children.

Wildlife education: Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park offers informal learning opportunities about local ecosystems. Children often enjoy the bird blinds where wildlife viewing is accessible and comfortable. Educational signage throughout the park helps explain the local flora and fauna at a basic level.

Timing considerations: Winter and spring provide more comfortable temperatures for families. Morning activities avoid midday heat during warmer months. Fall offers pleasant temperatures while avoiding the winter crowds when, as one visitor observed, "winter Texans are in."

    Tips from RVers

Alternative accommodations: RV camping options near Mission have decreased. Tent campers who typically use RV amenities should note that Bentsen park no longer offers full RV services. Nearby private campgrounds may provide RV options with tent camping areas adjacent.

Equipment scaling: RV campers transitioning to tent camping should adjust expectations for amenities. Pack additional battery-powered devices and lighting as electrical access is limited. Consider bringing portable shower options if staying multiple nights as shower facilities may be distant from tent sites.

Storage solutions: Vehicle access limitations affect gear transport. Collapsible containers and lightweight equipment make the hike to primitive sites easier. During rainy seasons, waterproof storage becomes essential as tent sites offer minimal protection from the elements.
