Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Mission, TX

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Bluebonnet RV Resort offers a designated pet wash station with fresh towels, requiring only that campers bring their preferred dog shampoo. Pet owners find concrete RV pads and clean facilities at most Mission campgrounds, with Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort, Split Rail RV Park, and Sleepy Valley Resort all welcoming pets of various sizes. Bentsen - Rio Grande Valley State Park Campground permits leashed dogs on its hiking trails but limits camping to primitive tent sites approximately 0.3 miles from bathroom facilities. Most RV parks in the area maintain standard pet policies requiring dogs to be leashed when outside the RV, with designated pet waste stations throughout the properties. The dog playground at Bluebonnet provides additional exercise space for pets after long travel days. Campers appreciate the gated security at most pet-friendly properties and the large sites that accommodate both RVs and pet enclosures.

Riverside trails at Chimney Park RV Resort on the Rio Grande offer pet walking opportunities with Border Patrol presence providing added security for dog walkers. Winter months (November-February) bring the most comfortable temperatures for dog walking, with summer heat requiring early morning or evening exercise to protect pets' paws from hot surfaces. The World Birding Center at Bentsen State Park allows leashed pets on most trails, though dogs must remain quiet to avoid disturbing wildlife viewing opportunities. Pet owners should bring sufficient supplies as the nearest full-service pet stores are located in McAllen, approximately 10-15 minutes from most Mission campgrounds. Most RV parks feature grassy areas for quick relief walks, while the dog wash stations at select properties prove especially valuable after muddy trail adventures.

    The Fig Tree RV Resort

    Friendly atmosophere

I stayed here for February and March while visiting my aunt, who snow birds at Fig Tree. While it’s marketed as a 55+ community, they do allow a small portion of spots to be booked by younger singles or couples (I don’t think they would allow families with children, however). They have a wide array of events weekly that can be fun to attend, and the residents and staff are kind and enjoyable. The park is clean but could use some upgrades/fixing up (a fence needs to be replaced, 1-2 washer/dryers are usually out of order, the gate was broken during my stay, etc), but they are actively working on improvements. Pets are welcome, it’s about 45 minutes from South Padre, and great for day trips into Mexico.

Don’t count on their WiFi working (it is also not secured), but I did have great service with Verizon and good service with AT&T.

Overall, I would definitely consider coming back next winter.

    Lazy Palm Ranch

All in all a good quiet place to stay

The campground is located about 1 1/2 miles off the main highway. It is quiet. The help is friendly helpful if they would clean up, the grass burns and the stickers it would be a very nice place to stay, but it’s hard to get out of your camper and walk around because your feet load up with stickers the dogs cannot walk because of the stickers and I mean a lot of stickers

    Rancho El Charco

    Rancho El Charco

Rancho el Charco is a place to power up the chakras and heal the spirit. One deep breath gazing over the mirrored waters of Walker Lake and you'll know; this is heaven. Waking up in Henry's tent every morning to a lake side sunrise was a powerful heart warming experience. That big Texas Sky will make you catch your breath. Thank you staff for a memorable experience. See you soon.

    Tip O' Texas RV Resort

    Great place to visit

I really enjoyed my stay at this campsite with my family. We actually came here on our Spring Break when we were in high school. We decided to come here because it wasn't a very long drive from home, and we knew there was some good hiking nearby. Located in Pharr Texas, the park is surrounded my beautiful citrus groves. You literally feel like you are in a desert oasis. Our favorite part is that it is located very close to the Rio Grande Valley. There are so many great attractions and places to do outdoor activities. If you want to head to the water you can drive an hour away and hit the Gulf of Mexico. We did this the second day we stayed here and it was so much fun, i would highly recommend doing this!! My mom and I also went shopping nearby- there is a great mall and shopping area close. The RV park was good. Water and electrical hookups, and enough room between sites which we like. Clean restrooms and area.

    Encore Lakewood

    Very Pet Friendly. Great amenities

If you are near the border and are looking for a great place for your furry companion, Lakewood RV Resort is a great stop.  It's near South Padre Island, and the border. If you're looking for a location where you can stay and experience nice amenities though, this is great for that as well.

Don't expect rustic or run down locations here. Full RV hookups, pools, billiards, and outdoor activities for all ages, but especially seniors. I can't recommend this place enough!

Guide to Mission

Camping sites near Mission, Texas offer several amenities for visitors with pets. The area's predominantly flat terrain makes for easy walks with dogs, with temperatures averaging 68°F in winter and climbing to 96°F during summer months. Campgrounds throughout the Rio Grande Valley provide designated spaces for pets, with several properties offering enhanced features beyond standard pet relief areas.

What to do

Bird watching with leashed pets: At Bentsen - Rio Grande Valley State Park Campground, visitors can explore trails with their leashed dogs while spotting local wildlife. "Busy season is November-February when birds are easy to spot and winter Texans are in. Fun place to hike and check out what is in the bird blinds," notes Hannah B.

Riverside walking opportunities: The trails at Chimney Park RV Resort On The Rio Grande provide exercise options along the river. "Border patrol post on the property. Very safe. No cable and cell service spotty," mentions William F. The resort's location offers unique water-adjacent walking routes.

Botanical exploration: Winter visitors particularly enjoy the native plant landscapes at local parks. "Bentsen Palm Village RV Resort's unique hub-and-spoke circle design allows ample space to maneuver even the biggest RVs," reports George R., highlighting the resort's layout that creates natural walking paths through tropical plantings.

What campers like

Gated properties with security features: Many visitors appreciate the secure environment at Acacia RV & MH Park, especially when walking dogs after dark. "Friendly with a cozy atmosphere. Everyone very helpful...neighbors and staff," notes Cindy P.

Winter Texan community activities: Long-term visitors with pets enjoy the social aspects of Mission's campgrounds. "Adult resort, lots of activities and super friendly residents!" shares Lynn B. about her stay, highlighting the community atmosphere found at many properties.

Site spaciousness: Campers value properties that provide adequate room between sites for pet containment. "The sites are large with FHU and 50amp. They have lots of outdoor activities around the park and are next door to the Rio Grande State Park," writes Jeff & Steff about their experience camping with pets in the area.

What you should know

Primitive camping considerations: For tent camping with pets at Bentsen - Rio Grande Valley State Park Campground, prepare for a hike to facilities. "Bathrooms are about .3 miles away," warns Hannah B., making it important to plan for pet care during longer bathroom trips.

Summer heat precautions: Concrete and asphalt surfaces can reach 140°F during summer months. Walk pets before 9am or after 7pm to prevent paw burns. Many campgrounds recommend boots for dogs during midday outings between May-September.

Pet supply availability: Stock up on pet food and medications before arrival. The nearest pet supply stores are located approximately 5 miles north in McAllen, with limited emergency veterinary services available weekends and holidays.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning for kids and pets: When traveling with both children and animals, consider campgrounds with dedicated recreation areas. "Beautiful Trails! I went on a hot day but the trees surrounding the trails made the experience beautiful! We saw a turkey too!" shares Martina about her family experience at Bentsen State Park.

Shade requirements: Pack portable shade structures for pets at sites with limited tree cover. Many campsites have southern exposure with minimal natural shade during midday hours.

Swimming alternatives: While the Rio Grande is not suitable for swimming, Sleepy Valley Resort and similar properties provide pool access. "Nice concrete pads very friendly. We were welcomed by Jim who escorted us to our site. Always something to do," notes Michael D. about the resort amenities.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for pet owners: Request sites away from busy roadways when traveling with anxious pets. Corner spots often provide additional exterior space for pet enclosures.

Seasonal reservation timing: Book 6-12 months in advance for winter stays with pets, as Split Rail RV Park & Resort and similar properties fill quickly from November-March. "Arrived in time for evening of Christmas carols and fellowship. Staff helpful and residents friendly. Older park but we'll maintained. Plenty of activities to keep you busy," advises Joan R.

Full-hookup advantages: Most Mission area campgrounds offer sewer connections, allowing for convenient gray water disposal when bathing pets. Water pressure averages 40-50 psi at most locations, suitable for outdoor pet washing.
