Best Campgrounds near Brownsville, TX

Brownsville offers diverse campground options across the southernmost tip of Texas, with developed facilities primarily catering to RV travelers and seasonal visitors. Located near the Mexican border, camping areas like Tropical Trails RV Resort and Isla Blanca Park provide tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin accommodations. Several campgrounds feature direct access to water, particularly around South Padre Island, with waterfront sites available at places like Port Isabel Park Center and the South Padre Island KOA. The region includes both privately operated RV resorts and county park campgrounds with varying levels of amenities and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.

Camping near Brownsville experiences extreme seasonal heat during summer months, requiring careful planning around temperatures that often exceed 90°F. Most established campgrounds provide water and electrical hookups to mitigate the climate challenges. "The sun on Padre Island can be brutal. So you will need to time your visit or have good AC and cover," notes one camper about the region's conditions. Beach camping options exist along Boca Chica Beach and South Padre Island, though wind conditions can be challenging and some areas require permits. Winter brings milder temperatures and an influx of seasonal residents ("Winter Texans"), making advance reservations essential during this popular season. Proximity to the Mexican border means some areas have limited services, while coastal sites may experience storm surges during hurricane season.

Waterfront camping experiences receive consistent praise from visitors, particularly sites with views of the Laguna Madre or Gulf of Mexico. Many campgrounds provide direct beach access or are within walking distance of shorelines. According to one visitor, "The beach is about 15 miles outside of the Port of Brownsville Texas and very close to the Mexican Border. The beach is a wild and desolate place." RV parks in the region typically offer full hookups, swimming pools, and organized activities, especially during winter months when the parks reach peak occupancy. Spacing between sites varies significantly between properties, with some offering generous separation while others place units in close proximity. Wildlife viewing opportunities exist throughout the area, with several campgrounds providing access to bird watching locations that attract visitors from across the country during seasonal migrations.

    Drive onto the beach

Like most texas beaches you can drive on to the beach here. Fee is 14$ in 2025. Can pull in any size camper or trailer just don't get stuck in soft sand. Lots of the people you'd expect that drive on to beaches- party and music types, also no segregation between fishermen and swimmers. There are showers and toilets at pavilion by parking lot. I parked at parking lot and walked in with tent to area blocked off from driving.

    Boca Chica Beach

Rarely open for camping due to launch activity

Nice beach to visit, especially to see starship prep activity. Unlikely to be able to camp long term. Best to stay rocket ranch, raptors roost or starship station to view a launch!

    Long Island Village

Currently the sites are indivually owned - but still rentable!

I was hoping to stay here in the future so I made a phone call. While the location is still open, it appears that each individual site is individually owned now and you must book through a 3rd party site - like Air BNB - for each one. There is no longer a way to book thorough the campground itself, but it seems like a nice place to stay!  I'll check it out before my trip.
