Bugs galore

We had some issues with fire ants at our campsite, the lights around the bathroom attracted a hellish number of bugs. Spots were well spaced. The picnic shelters were awesome. The camp hosts were very friendly and responsive.

Nice park aside from crazy summer heat and bugs. Great view of stars on clear night with little moonlight.

Gorgeous night skies

I've stayed here twice now and neither time was a let down. Sites 22 and 15 were my sites but you can't really go wrong with any of them. The lack of trees around the sites is intentional, this is an International Dark Sky park after all, and you don't want anything to get in the way of your night skies viewing!

Quite Wooded Camp Site

This campground is a good place to stargaze. The campsite itself had good shade.  It had water, a grill and a ground firepit/grill. The camp ground had nice trails and small lake for fishing.

Fine for a 1 night stopover

Copper Breaks State Park was a 1 night stopover for us. Sites are in a open grassy area, but nicely spaced. The bathroom was dated, but clean. There was no hot water for the shower. We didn't get to see the lake or hike any of the trails, but worked for a 1 night layover.

Good stay for sure

We came on the hottest days so far this year (I believe 105 to 108 were some temps recorded) and the water levels were low but we still had fun with feeding the Longhorns as well as morning and evening hikes. Definitely not packed campgrounds and wildlife was plentiful Staff was amazingly nice and very inviting

Quiet and peaceful high plains campground

We stayed here midweek in May and enjoyed a quiet campground with a few other travelers. The sites are pretty close together so the feel would likely be different on a crowded weekend. There’s decent hiking and good star gazing (it touts itself as a Dark Sky park). A storm blew in overnight from the panhandle and the winds were pretty fierce, wouldn’t want to be here for a tornado — we saw some gnarly twister damage (dating from April 2022) in a small town about 20 miles south of here along Highway 6.

A Dark Sky park and campground

We really enjoyed our stay at Copper Breaks State Park! The campsite was level and had 30/50 amp service with water hookups. The also had dump stations. The is a small lake in the park with boating and swimming areas. The had numerous trails. In the height of summer it is very hot so be prepared if you hike any of the trails. They also had an equestrian area. This park is in a dark sky designated area so the view if the night sky is spectacular! The restrooms/showers are very basic and about average for the Texas state parks that I have stayed at.

I really liked the shelters that they built at each of the sites in the Comanche camping area. They are built for maximum shade but with plenty of airflow for cooling. They also look kind of cool. We saw a lot of wildlife (birds and small mammals) in the area.

Amazing Night Skies!

I love this park! The staff is great and it is very well maintained. The bathhouse is clean. No shade at the RV sites, but each site has a picnic table with a teepee shade structure over it as well as a raised grill. Lots of space between campsites. Our electric/water site #6 in Comanche Campground was long enough to leave our rig hooked up and was easy to back in to.

Unfortunately, I was not able to do any hiking this trip. It was 100 degrees when we arrived and didn’t ‘cool off’ to 85 until 9pm. The trails looked great and I’d love to come back in the late fall or winter and stay a few days to explore. Our AT&T hotspot was able to stream a movie.

Where this park really shines is after the sun goes down. Copper Breaks is an International Dark Sky Park. We were so lucky to have clear skies on our one night stay! I stayed up early into the morning to try my hand at night sky pics and got my first Milky Way picture.

Cool Little Park

I spend a couple days here, camping in a primitive / hike-in site, and hiking during the day. It’s a very cool park and a must-visit for anyone in the DFW area since it’s an easy weekend trip. The primitive sites could be farther apart - they were close enough that I frequently unintentionally distracted the neighbors dog. That was the only downside though. Nice park, great staff, and beautiful landscape.

Can't wait to come back!

Camped a single night and unfortunately caught a gnarly winter thunderstorm over night. We were looking forward to the awesome start nights we've read so much about, but will have to wait till next time. The camp site was nice tho. Fire ring, grills, covered table, and enough space between sites. Both lakes looked really good, altho the wind and cold temps kept me from fishing this time. A quick drive around the park just filled the to-do list for our next visit!

Home sweet home....

The Rolling Plains has been home to my family for a long long time and it’s always wonderful to be back. Copper Breaks is a beautiful, wild place perfectly managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife. A light touch all around with simple, compact campgrounds to keep a small footprint on the terrain. This is a place where campsites are best used to live out of... not in.

TPW has done a great job keeping light to a minimum. If you don’t like the dark or need a bunch of exterior lights on your camper, please choose another site. There are no street lamps, no canopy lights and thankfully most campers respect the dark here and keep the blinds pulled and exterior lights off. Still... bring your red flashlights and take a hike to see the best views.

The trails are great day or night. Winter or summer. Use your feet, horse or your MTB to explore the backcountry and there is even primitive camping on some of the trials. Beware of snakes and although they are very rare, I would keep your little ones in sight as cats are very very occasionally seen in the Rolling Plains.

The little museum is great and I don’t just say that because my great grandfather’s photo hangs there.

The tent sites are decently spaced and occupy the low areas to serve as wind blocks. The Comanche RV site sits up on a ridge with a greater than 180 degree view of the night sky.

This brings us to why you should really be here. Though the trails are beautiful and the terrain rough and untamed... it’s the skies that draw people here. With the Comanche Springs observatory just around the corner and the dark sky designation... the views here in the after hours are simply astounding. Stars, planets, satellites and shooting stars galore. Set your calendar for the next new moon and head out west for a show you won’t forget.

Awesome!

Had a 2 night stay on our cross country trip and it was perfect.  The campsites were well spaced, level, clean, and easy hook ups (no septic though). We took advantage of the trails and did a 7 mile hike on the moderate level.  Low level military jets occasional during the day was the only faint noise, but it's ok … they are always welcomed!  The night was lite by the full moon so we could not see the stars well, but still … beautifully quite. The museum gave a great history of the area and we learned a lot. This was our first time with a Texas park and it was great! Thanks Texas!

Quiet, loads of stars

Stayed at campsite 37 at the equestrian camping area. All other sites in this campground were empty so it was very quiet. My campsite offered great views of the canyon and an amazing array of stars at night. Flush toilets, showers close by and water pumps at the site. Great site and worth the $15.

Pretty Cool

We camped here over New Years. It got down to 10°, which was crazy cold. This park is a dark sky park, but it was overcast while we were here, so I haven't seen that part of it, yet. The rangers and camp hosts were all very sweet. Bring a mallet and as thick of a mattress or pad as you can find - the campsites are rocky and the ground is very hard.

Desert camping

Campgrounds are modern with electricity, water, tables, and facilities nearby. The park is subject to being under a burn ban for a significant portion of the year. I forgot my shoes (this sounds crazy but it happens when you pack for five people and a dog), I really recommend having shoes at this campground. There are a lot of biting bugs and the trails are not easy to hike in flip flops. Trails are listed as being accessible for mountain biking, however they are not necessarily maintained for mountain biking. There is also a swimming area which makes the kids very happy.

Copper breaks is acknowledged as an International Dark Sky Park meaning that stargazing is spectacular. Kids can also catch fireflies, which are abundant in the evening and after dark.

Known for it's dark skies!

The only reason I give this park a 3 is because we did not stay long enough to explore the trails. We went for it's epic dark skies! Took our big Orion telescope and had great clear views of the milky way, even got to see Venus as a cresent! It was very peaceful, went in March. More of a dessert-y feeling park so if you are looking for think forest this is not that park. We will definitely go again!
