Sitting atop Buchanan Dam on Lake Buchanan, Big Chief RV Resort draws a steady mix of RV travelers and anglers to the Highland Lakes region of central Texas. The resort operates year-round and accommodates rigs up to 70 feet, with full hookups including water, electric, and sewer at most sites. Sites are generally level dirt pads, and pull-through options make arrivals and departures straightforward for larger setups.
Water access shapes the experience here more than anything else. The resort sits directly on the lake, with a boat launch on site, and fishing is a consistent draw. Charters book up quickly during peak season, and bank fishing is available for those who prefer to stay on shore. A handful of water-view pull-through sites have drawn repeat visitors, though campers note that WiFi signal weakens closer to the waterfront. Cell coverage is also variable in spots near the lake.
The amenity list goes well beyond hookups. A pool and hot tub, disc golf course, laundry facility, and a large dog area round out the on-site options. The resort also has cabins for groups that need overflow sleeping space, and "buddy sites" accommodate multiple rigs traveling together. TexasGirlOnTheRoad notes that staff "make the rounds often in case you need help," and multiple reviewers flag the cleanliness of both the facilities and the grounds as a consistent strength. Fire pits are not provided, and portable ground-level fire pits are not permitted, so campers should plan accordingly.
Shade is limited. Many sites are open, which becomes a factor in warmer months. Spring brings wildflowers across the Hill Country, and an annual blues concert in early October has made the resort a recurring stop for some visitors. Inks Lake State Park Campground is roughly three miles southeast for campers who want a state park setting with more tree cover.
