The Bristol area in eastern Tennessee features a mix of established campgrounds and lakeside recreation areas, with several options for RV, tent, and cabin camping within a 30-mile radius. Little Oak Campground on Watauga Lake provides secluded waterfront sites about 7 miles from the main road, while Shadrack Campground offers year-round accessibility closer to Bristol Motor Speedway. The region includes both Tennessee state parks like Warriors' Path and privately operated facilities such as Cherokee Trails Campground, which provides tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin rentals approximately 20 minutes from downtown Bristol.

Road conditions vary significantly throughout the area, with some campgrounds requiring navigation along winding mountain roads. "Quiet, secluded little gem in the woods! Sites and facilities are well kept and clean. Long way from Bristol, so don't forget anything," noted one camper about Little Oak Campground. Most established campgrounds in the region operate seasonally from April through October, though several remain open year-round. Cell service can be limited at more remote locations, particularly those nestled in valleys or surrounded by higher terrain. Travelers should check reservation requirements, as many campgrounds fill quickly during NASCAR race weekends and summer holidays.

Waterfront camping receives consistently positive reviews, with several campgrounds offering direct lake or river access. Observation Knob Park and Little Oak provide boat-in camping options on Watauga Lake, while Warriors' Path State Park sits along Fort Patrick Henry Lake. Campers frequently mention the peaceful settings and clean facilities at these locations. The proximity to outdoor recreation opportunities represents another highlight, with easy access to hiking trails, fishing spots, and water activities. For those seeking more amenities, campgrounds like Roan Mountain State Park feature full hookups, camp stores, and organized activities. Noise levels vary significantly, with sites closer to Bristol experiencing more traffic sounds, while more distant locations offer greater tranquility but require longer drives to access services and attractions.

      Doe River Landing

Kylie T & Andrew W. Review not accurate

My husband and I arrived at Doe River Landing for 3 nights and enjoyed everything the resort offered. While there we read the 2 reviews posted by Kylie T, and by Andrew W, who gave the resort a 1 star rating. Not knowing the facts that caused the rating by them, and occurred prior to us, we approach the owner and asked.

The owner showed us videos from their security cameras. These adults has stated in Kylie T review and confirm by Andrew W review that they were a group of 20 adults and "every single one of us is over 21 and family". So why are these adults playing "hide and seek" under the pavilion as they stated? Andrew W stated, "It was not blocked off", yet they had to crawl on the ground and around bushes to get under the pavilion. When the owner yelled at them approximately 10 adults that were under the pavilion crawled out which was captured on the security cameras. Andrew W stated in his review the owner called them hooligans, which is rowdy, destructive persons and from the security cameras, that description is correct. There was no mention of damages in their reviews such as the Adirondack chair they broke or possible damage to the water pipes and electric wires under the pavilion, which the owner was currently checking.

Once we read these two reviews by Kylie T and Andrew W and saw the owners security videos, we felt future customers deserved to know another opinion based on our findings.

These entitled adults justified their review of a 1 star by stating they paid money to use the campground.

I would ask these adults "why do you think it is OK to treat someone else's property in this destructive way?"

      Spacious Skies Bear Den

Seems to be a well established campground in an off the beaten path location. Roads alternately paved and gravel. The campsite is gravel in a wooded setting. Fair amount of space between sites. The bathhouse is clean but dated.

      Doe River Landing

Unprofessional hosts that ruins a place with good potential

We brought our whole family out and rented almost every cabin on the property, plus the event center, for the weekend— we gave this place a lot of business. And honestly, the stay itself was great— nice place, no complaints about the cabins. The owner is the problem. He came flying in in his blue F-150 doing 20–30 mph where the posted speed limit is 5, and started screaming at us over something that could've been handled with a simple conversation. His exact words:"Where are your parents? This is a family establishment. I will not have hooligans running around here." Every single one of us is over 21 and family. All we were doing was playing hide and seek— which isn't against any of the property's rules— and there were no other guests to disturb, since we had the entire area rented. He still threatened to call the police, even though it wasn't even quiet hours. Before anyone could get a word in, he peeled out so fast the gravel sprayed up at us and our cars. Then on his way out he drove the wrong way down the property's one-way road, so apparently the rules only apply to guests. It's sad, because the property itself is great, and we were never anything but nice to the owners the whole weekend. To be treated in such an unprofessional manner— screamed at, threatened, and never given so much as an apology afterward— put a real dent in the weekend. We won't be back

      Doe River Landing

Beautiful place ruined by unprofessional ownership

Our group of about 20 rented nearly every cabin at Doe River Landing for my friend's wedding weekend, with the reception held on site. The cabins were nice and well-equipped, and the only other guests were in a cabin half a mile away through the woods. Unfortunately, the hosts ruined the stay. One night, some of us were playing hide and seek in an area that wasn't blocked off or against any rule. The host's husband came speeding in at roughly 30 mph(the posted limit is 5), jumped out of his truck screaming that he"will not have child hooligans running around the campground," told us to"go back to the motel we crawled out of," and demanded to see our parents— despite all of us being adults in our twenties. He then peeled out so aggressively he sprayed gravel at us and our cars. It wasn't even quiet hours, and we weren't disturbing anyone. Afterward, the host called us again, passive-aggressive, and questioned our ages— even though you have to be 21 just to rent a cabin there. The property is lovely, but the hosts' behavior put a real damper on what should have been a joyful wedding celebration. It's a shame they treat people paying good money this way. We won't be back.

Washington & Jefferson National Forest Dispersed Sites

Epic Spot Near Iron Mountain and Rush Trails

I wandered a bit and took a left up a gravel road near where the sites indicated were located and just drove for a few miles. Found an awesome spot with a fire pit and lush surroundings. The road was unpaved (but as are all to the best spots) and there were definitely some large rocks and potholes to navigate. Would suggest higher raised vehicle. Saw nobody else and felt like I had my own slice of paradise.

      Breathtaking VIEWS!!

This spot is amazing! You can not beat these views. Drive in was a little ruff in some spots but any car or rig can make it up here. You feel on top of the world. The kinda place you could stay for a few days!

Old North Carolina 105 Road - Dispersed Spot

Made it up with 22ft offroad travel trailer

After much research I could not find anything about brining a travel trailer up Old NC 105. Everything told me not to. I detached my truck at the bottom and drove to the top. And found it was doable…. If you have the right setup.

I have an ember overland 190msl and a Ram 2500 diesel. I made it up safely. Yes there were sketchy spots, but if you have a high clearance off road camper with independent suspension and enough truck.. you’re good to go. I did have to air down quite a bit (25psi) on the camper (30psi) on truck due to steep inclines with large rock step ups.

But it is doable with the right setup.

    Guide to Bristol

Camping near Bristol, Tennessee offers varied terrain with elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,200 feet across the region's foothills and mountain areas. The Cherokee National Forest encompasses much of the area, providing accessible camping with water features that remain suitable for recreation from mid-April through mid-October. Water levels at South Holston and Watauga lakes fluctuate seasonally, affecting some waterfront camping access.

    What to do

Kayaking on South Holston Lake: Little Oak Campground provides direct water access for paddlers. "There are few places that I've been to that top this location. Super easy camp ground to get to with excellent paved roads in very close to each of the Tri-Cities. The camp ground is well organized with many amenities including super easy access to the water on all sides," notes Nathan F.

Horse riding opportunities: Located 20 minutes from Bristol, Cherokee Trails Campground and Stables offers equestrian facilities alongside camping. "Way up the road! It's a nice place once you get here on the narrow country road. Nice clean bathhouse. Cabins, RV spots mostly level, paddocks for horses. Lots of exploration in the woods potential," explains reviewer Mimi.

Fishing access: Multiple sites offer bank fishing or boat launch facilities. "Great place to camp and fish," reports Bill T. about Cardens Bluff Campground. Experienced anglers recommend early morning hours for best catches, particularly for bass and trout in the mountain lakes.

    What campers like

Waterfront campsites: Little Oak Campground receives consistent praise for its lake setting. "Very kid-friendly super spacious campsites every site is right on the lake with amazing sunsets every night. Only wish they had electricity," writes Tiffany G. Sites closest to the water typically book 3-4 months in advance during summer.

Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention well-maintained bathhouses at several parks. "The bath houses were very clean... Nestled next to the Holly River. Prices were good," notes Doug S. about the Watauga Lake area. This contrasts with more remote sites where facilities may be more rustic.

Swimming opportunities: Natural water access provides cooling options during hot summer months. "Swim at sunset when the boats go quiet. Spacious sites; peaceful campground; clean showers," recommends Van M. about Little Oak Campground. Swimming areas without lifeguards operate under swim-at-your-own-risk policies.

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds in the region operate from April through October. "Most sites have a view of South Holston Lake and trail access to the water. Shower house were clean. All sites are primitive," explains Hank M. about Cardens Bluff Campground.

Campsite spacing varies significantly: Some areas offer more privacy than others. "Sites were right on top of one another and extremely crowded—felt like a tailgating party in a parking lot," reports Karin P. about Warriors' Path State Park. Sites numbered 50-75 at Warriors' Path typically offer more separation between neighbors.

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies throughout the region. "The only thing keeping me from giving this park a 5* review was the bath houses. While they are most definitely adequate there were few out of order making it difficult to get in to shower," writes Jedidiah J. about Warriors' Path State Park.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Warriors' Path State Park offers dedicated play areas for children. "This amazing campground has spots for tent and rv camping, hiking trails, a beautiful lake for kayaking and fishing, and a Marina where rentals are available! Park also has a Boundless Playground!" shares Natalie A.

Educational opportunities: Some parks offer ranger-led programs. "This is an enjoyable State Park with a lot to offer. The rangers and staff may be the nicest we've encountered. They have a full docket of activities, ranger-led hikes, games, crafts and wildlife lectures offered throughout the day," notes Sara M. about Warriors' Path State Park.

Kid-friendly hiking: Several shorter trails accommodate younger hikers. "Brought our family here for the end of spring break and had a blast. The kids loved riding thir bikes and scooters on the paved road through the park. My son and I enjoyed a round of disk golf while my wife and daughters made use of their awesome playground," explains Jedidiah J.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling requirements: Sugar Hollow Campground requires preparation for uneven terrain. "Best suited for smaller RVs but there are a couple of spots for larger ones," advises Kevin E. RVers recommend carrying extra leveling blocks for most sites in the region.

Reservation timing: For Roan Mountain State Park, booking well in advance is essential. "The upper numbered sites on the hillside are very private compared to most campgrounds. We have really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful place," shares Brian D. Sites with electrical hookups typically book 6-8 weeks in advance during peak season.

Power management: Electrical reliability varies between campgrounds. "Recommend a surge protector on your camper as there are no breakers on the electric hook up at the site (clustered elsewhere)," advises Eleanor about Observation Knob Park. 30-amp service is standard at most facilities, with limited 50-amp availability.
