Sunset watching and stargazing draw campers up to Whitetop Mountain, where the elevation puts the sky close and the horizon wide. The site is a dispersed camping area within Jefferson National Forest, managed by the US Forest Service and free to use. No designated sites, no hookups, no facilities. Campers find their own flat ground and set up where conditions allow.
The road to the top is the first thing to sort out. Several reviewers note rougher, rocky sections on the climb, though a 2WD truck and at least one minivan have made it without issue by going slow. A recent regrading made the drive easier, and one Class C RV completed it without trouble. The bigger challenge at the summit is wind. It can be relentless at the top, and tents positioned near a cluster of pines on the upper lot hold up better than those in the open. Fog and cloud cover are also worth checking before arrival: at this elevation, overcast conditions mean camping inside a cloud, with everything staying damp.
Cell coverage is limited but present. T-Mobile users have reported two bars of LTE at the hilltop, while Verizon and AT&T signals are sparse. Grayson Highlands State Park is roughly 30 minutes away, making this a reasonable base for campers who want to day-trip into the park. Whitetop Camp sits nearby for those who prefer a more structured setup. As Harley G. put it, "watching the sunset was spectacular, then being able to star gaze." Clear-sky forecasts make the biggest difference here, so check conditions before heading up.
