Byre Lake Recreation Area

Sort of confusing when you arrive you see the "electric spots" but you can park anywhere besides the "beach" for being about 6 minutes off of route 90, you can actually say there are some good things in life that are free .... We parked at the very "end" and got a level spot. On a Thursday there were 8 others here. Still plenty of room.

En route to Sturgis SD and storms slowed me way down, so I needed to find a spot to camp. Used the Dyrt app and found this great spot.

Pit toilets but looked clean. There is a beach for swimming, a pavilion, boat ramp and dock, fishing pier, fire rings, picnic tables, and so much more.

Rolled in around 5:30 on a Saturday and only one other (BIG) rig here. Plenty of space and clean (haven’t checked bathrooms). Perfect for a quick overnight stop!

Spring fed lake with a couple fishing piers, vault toilet, dumpster, picnic tables, gazebo, and power poles. No water. Park on the grass. Short drive to town, where you will find a couple gas stations, a tiny grocery store, and a lot of places to sell your soybeans corn and wheat. Power is $40 a night and you need to call the city to access power, but there are 15 amp outlets in the outhouse and the gazebo. Some shade in the afternoon if you park up by the trees. Unfortunately, vandalism of the toilets seems to be a chronic problem, but they were clean when we were there but no toilet paper. We had the place to ourselves overnight in mid-July. We experienced brutal mid-continent prairie heat at it's finest with temperatures to 100 during the day and 30 knot dry winds. Surprisingly, insects were not a problem because they baked during the day and were blown away at night. Night skies were amazing. We saw four other people here over 2 days and no one else stayed long.

This is a great open camp area around the lake. There is a vaulted toilet, fishing docks, dumpster, picnic tables, and for a $20 per day fee there is shore power. To get the power unlocked do you have to call the city at this number, (605) 869-2263. The state limit is five days. You can get pretty windy here, but there is a good wind block along the row of parking for the camping with power. Great views, quiet spot. Very accessible with big rigs. Little to no shade. Most spots are somewhat level, but if you’re camping outside of the electrical hook up area, there is an angle to the terrain, so be prepared to level as needed.

Beautiful park like setting a short drive from a small town. Campground has garbage service and a vaulted toilet. The toilet was a total disaster, not good, like someone spray painted the toilet with poop. Despite the toilet, I would recommend based on the idelic location.

This place is about as perfect as it gets! Free camping - dispersed so pull up where you want. Or choose a spot with a fire ring and table. 

Views are OUTSTANDING! You can fish, kayak, hike, etc. Right off highway but very quiet and peaceful. Slept great. 

They do have toilets (I didn't use them) and they do have a couple electric spots that are $20/night (I didn't use them). 

Just super easy, super beautiful and a great place to call home for a night or a few. 

Lots of mozzies at night - so use spray or plan to be in your tent/vehicle once the sun goes down.

This is a fantastic free campsite, not crowded, beautiful views and a wonderful lake.

The bathrooms are terrible and there is no running water though, so make sure to bring some toilet paper and some hand sanitizer. That said, it's better than nothing!

Stayed one overnight in a rooftop tent while passing through. Only a few other campers there on a Saturday evening. Pit toilet. Pay for electric hookup. For the most part it was peaceful, except for one truck that came through around midnight revving it’s engine and honking the horn. Startled me out of my sleep but otherwise, felt safe at this camping area. Added plus that it was a close drive to Badlands NP.
