The Greer area of South Carolina offers tent camping ranging from free primitive tent campsites to walk-in sites at state parks throughout the nearby Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area and surrounding forests. Whether you prefer riverside primitive tent camping or secluded walk-in tent sites, options here suit self-sufficient campers looking for solitude over developed amenities. Jones Gap State Park Campground offers secluded walk-in tent sites positioned along a river, with sites spaced approximately a quarter mile apart for enhanced privacy. The Burrells Ford area in Sumter National Forest provides free primitive tent camping with riverside locations and trail access.

Tent campsites in this region typically feature basic amenities suitable for self-sufficient campers. Most walk-in tent sites include fire rings and tent pads, though picnic tables are less common at the more remote locations. At Jones Gap, campers must pack in all supplies and pack out all trash as no waste receptacles are provided. The hike to tent sites varies from easy quarter-mile walks at Burrells Ford to more challenging half-mile treks at locations like Pine Point Primitive Campground in Table Rock State Park. Vault toilets are available at parking areas but often not near the actual tent sites, requiring preparation for backcountry hygiene.

Several walk-in tent locations offer exceptional privacy compared to standard campgrounds. The tent-only sites at Jones Gap provide a true wilderness experience with sites positioned for solitude. A visitor noted that "each spot is about a quarter mile from the next, so you feel like you have the mountain to yourself." Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area's trailside camping appeals to hikers seeking primitive tent sites with minimal development. Areas with creek and river proximity are particularly popular, offering both scenic views and ambient sounds. Tent campers at Burrells Ford appreciate the lantern posts and food hanging systems provided at established sites, helpful features for those camping in bear country. A reviewer mentioned that while "the hike to the campsites is an easy, slightly downhill roadbed," campers should be prepared to carry all gear and supplies approximately a third of a mile from the parking area.

      Rutledge Lake RV Resort

This is almost a perfect park. Sites are a little tight, pond is nice, but geese were on another level. So loud at 3-5am it woke us up and kept us up. Our neighbors were also inconsiderately loud at 4-6am. We thought they were pulling out the first time and gave a pass, but it was 4 straight days. This was only place at the time time that had sites. Definitely pretty more scenic parks. We book 2 days out. Staff is super friendly and price wasn’t bad last minute.

      Avery Creek Roadside Camping

We were probably lucky, but we drove in on a Monday and found a nice site with the creek/stream burbling in the background. Yes, there is dirt entrance/road and traffic, but not much and way quieter than family campgrounds. This site is my perfect idea of an amazing free off grid camping spot.

Lake Powhatan Glamping — National Forests In North Carolina

This place is a nice campground, quiet and the guests (during our stay) respect others by keeping the noise down. The spaces are set up to maximize privacy between sites. There is no cell phone service (to do this report we are in a picnic area by a small lake and I can get cell as well as internet on my travelfi device) sos is the only access. I normally listen to audio books but not while here. On my computer I could see three others with low signals; they might have had a better device/provider. The spots tend to the small back in typically found in campsites built before RVs got really big, type. There is another camping area I haven’t been to yet and I did see a large over lander (looks indestructible and tall/long) towable head that way and the campground attendant didn’t predict any problems so perhaps there are larger spots elsewhere. This place has single person shower rooms and nice flush toilets. The whole place is set in woodland so it isn’t like a commercial RV place that was more concerned with volume over aesthetics. This is a lovely spot with ample amenities (my space had no hookups) for our type of camping (toilets, trash, quiet neighbors, semi private spaces) just zero phone or internet.

      John H. Moss Lake Campground

It’s a small, clean campground but we are next to a busy road (site 28) and also the entrance to the public access of Moss Lake. It’s a tight squeeze for us as a 33’ fifth wheel.

      Wash Creek Dispersed Pull-Off

Pull off along well used access road

Great spot to pull in last minute. There are multiple spots along this stretch of road. Would not recommend if you want to post up somewhere private, decent amount of traffic pulling through for a mountain road.

      John H. Moss Lake Campground

      Good for small rigs

Tight fit, we stayed here with our 20ft trailer and it is a little tight. The site was at a slight angle and I noticed a lot of sites are the same way. Plus side is there is a security gate with code entry. Easy access to lake. Good clean boathouse and nice full hookups.

    Guide to Greer

Tent camping near Greer, South Carolina offers access to pristine mountain habitats within the Blue Ridge Mountains at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 feet. The area receives approximately 60 inches of rainfall annually, creating lush forests and abundant water features. Summer temperatures typically range from 60-85°F, while spring and fall nights can drop into the 40s, requiring campers to pack accordingly.

    What to do

Fishing access points: The Chattooga River at Burrells Ford provides excellent trout fishing opportunities. "Good amount of camping with a short hike in. Sites are right on the Chatooga River. This river is stocked with trout. Fishing license is required but both SC and GA are acceptable as the river is the state line," notes Jason D.

Waterfall hikes: Multiple cascades are accessible via short trails from camping areas. At Jocassee Gorges Wildlife Management Area, visitors find "amazing scenery and waterfalls" with "very little houses, it's a deep cold lake and the cleanest lake in SC. There are so many gorgeous waterfalls on the lake!" according to Erica.

Swimming holes: Natural river pools offer cooling options during summer months. At Jones Gap State Park Campground, John R. shares that "Jones Gap gives you the feeling of really being deep in the Appalachians. The rushing river and dense foliage with tons of mountain laurel makes the air seem so fresh. I love just coming here and hiking upstream and playing in the river."

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Campers consistently appreciate the distance between tent sites at Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. Maddi P. calls it "A top favorite" explaining, "I seem to always believe my most recent adventure is my most favorite but no where in the upstate of SC has stood out to me like this area. Wonderful trails with breath taking views and technical climbs plus discrete camping."

River-adjacent camping: The sound of flowing water enhances the tent camping experience. At Jones Gap State Park Campground, Sara M. found "Gorgeous site, a bit chilly by the river but beautiful and close enough to still use the park bathrooms! Sites are large and have varying degrees of privacy."

Clean facilities: Despite remote settings, many areas maintain quality restrooms. At The Bike Farm, Rick noted, "This is a great Campground if you're not looking for a bunch of frou-frou amenities. No garbage cans so pack in and pack out. No generators allowed. But clean campsites and plenty of toilets. There's even a primitive hot shower."

    What you should know

Reservation limitations: Many sites fill quickly during peak seasons. At Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, visitors should book several months ahead for summer weekends.

Weather variability: Mountain conditions can change rapidly. Christy C. recounts at Burrells Ford: "We noticed that the temps seemed to be dropping along our walk and there was actually a little snow/sleet falling on us.... uh oh! We set up camp after about 4.5 miles at Burrell's Ford... Before we could get our tents set up, dinner made and gear stowed up high for the night, we were freezing! It dropped to 17 degrees."

Bear precautions: Food storage systems are essential when tent camping near Greer. RC S. advises at Burrells Ford to "follow local regulations for camping in these areas as far as cleanliness, fire safety, and distance from the water" particularly when seeking more secluded spots.

    Tips for camping with families

Accessibility considerations: Some tent sites require substantial hiking. At Pine Point Primitive Campground, Kirsten J. notes, "The hike is an easy half mile, on a trail, with slight ups and downs. I don't recommend rolling anything down the trail (no stroller, wagon, etc.) but instead, be ready for a short walk."

Kid-friendly sites: Certain campgrounds specifically accommodate younger campers. Laura C. found Jones Gap site #8 "the closest walk in spot from the Parking area. We were able to hike in a ton of gear (coolers, dog bed, etc (with a little work and a few trips) and it was worth it for the seclusiveness. Having both toddler and dog we knew we couldn't go far but this still felt like we were in the middle of nowhere."

Educational opportunities: Several areas offer nature programs. Diana C. mentions Jones Gap has "a nice picnic area with a little store, a bath house with flush toilets and hot showers, and an old retired fish hatchery to explore."

    Tips for RVers

Limited options: The Greer area primarily caters to tent camping with few RV sites. Wilderness Cove Campground offers some amenities, though Todd R. cautions that "Tubing is great, but the campsites and cabins are very limited."

Alternative accommodations: Cabin options exist for those seeking more comfort. Tammie S. notes Wilderness Cove is a "Very clean, small, quiet campground. Tents only, they do have some cabins for rent. Nice clean bath house. Was able to access wifi near the tubing office. Prices are extremely reasonable."

Road conditions: Access roads can challenge larger vehicles. Dave experienced at Wilderness Cove, "The drive down the mountain is a little nerve-wracking for a city boy, and my car's low clearance had me scraping my underside on some rocky bumps inside the property, but that's just a heads-up, not a complaint."
