Curtis Creek Campground is nestled in the mountains at the base of the Blue Ridge just minutes from the quaint town of Old Fort and less than an hour from the popular city of Asheville. Located in the first tract of National Forest land in the eastern US at the site of an old Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) camp, the campground is surrounded by old growth forests and roaring trout streams. The gravel road through the campground ascends to the Blue Ridge Parkway, providing easy access to the Mount Mitchell area.
Visitors to the campground can enjoy a variety of activities including fishing, swimming, day hiking, picnicking, and scenic driving. Curtis Creek is well known for its excellent trout fishing. Swimming holes along the creek provide wading opportunities on hot summer days. History buffs will enjoy exploring the remains of the old CCC buildings surrounding the campground. Two Forest Service trails depart from the campground. The Hickory Branch trail provides a short (approximately 1/2 mile) hike to a series of waterfalls, and longer hikes to access the backcountry area around Mackey Mountain. Mackey Mountain and the valley of Mackey Creek contain the largest unbroken tract of old-growth forest in the Pisgah National Forest. The Snooks Nose trail provides a strenuous hike to a ridge with beautiful views, eventually ending at the Blue Ridge Parkway. Many other Forest Service trails are within a short drive of the campground, including Catawba Falls and Point Lookout trail.
Located in rich mountain hardwood forests at an elevation of 2,000 feet, Curtis Creek Campground provides a secluded streamside setting. Curtis Creek, a popular trout stream surrounded by lush rhododendron and hemlock, runs along the east side of the campground. Old-growth forests cover the mountain peaks on either side of the valley. The Curtis Creek area provides beautiful scenery year-round, from stunning fall foliage displays to abundant spring and summer wildflowers.
Curtis Creek Campground is six miles from the town of Old Fort, which has a variety of restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, and medical facilities. Popular attractions in Old Fort include the Mountain Gateway Museum, the Old Train Depot, Davidson Fort, Catawba Falls, and Andrews Geyser. The campground is seven miles from the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, close to Mount Mitchell State Park. Visitors can make trips to nearby Black Mountain (15 miles) and Asheville (30 miles) to visit art galleries, shops, and restaurants.

Linville Gorge is a vast designated Wilderness area that sits on 11,786 acres of rolling hills and thick forest. The gorge surrounds the Linville River, which is located some 1,400 feet below the ridge, creating a stunning canyon that has earned the nickname "The Grand Canyon of North Carolina."The Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic byway with plenty of natural attractions and recreational opportunities for visitors. Aside from natural features, the parkway is also a cross-section of Appalachian mountain history. Most of our sites offer full hookups and 30/50 amps. We do have several water and electric only sites that are perfect for pop-ups, tear drops and more petite campers. These sites are located a short walk to our clean and well maintained bathroom facilities.

All of the park’s 106 family campsites have a grill and picnic table and are located near a *bathhouse with hot showers. A dump station is located at the campground check-in. The campground has 86 RV sites with water and electric hookups and 20 tent sites, each with water. The tent camping area does not have electric hookups. There are no sewer hookups in the campground.
*Off-Season Bathhouse Closures: November 1st through April 15th Bathhouses 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 will be closed during the off-season. The 94 Bath House located in the lower area around sites 10 and 11 will be the only bathhouse open during the off-season.
Dumpsters and recycling bins are also located at the campground check-in. Wi-Fi is available throughout the campground. A cell phone booster is also located at the campground check-in that Verizon Wireless customers may use to assist with cell service.
Four group sites, which will accommodate approximately 25 people each, are available. The group sites are located just south of the individual tent-only camping area of the Roan Mountain State Park campground. They have large gravel tent pads, picnic tables, fire rings, grills, and water spigots at each site. There is no electricity, camping is only allowed on the gravel pads (not in the surrounding grassy areas), and it is approximately a 1/4 mile walk to the nearest bathrooms/shower houses. These four sites may be reserved up to 12 months in advance.
Located on TN Hwy 143 at the base of the majestic 6,285 Roan Mountain, Roan Mountain State Park encompasses more than 2,000 acres dominated by rich hardwood forest along rugged ridges. The cool, clear Doe River winds its way through the center of the park and supports a healthy population of trout. Wildflowers and wildlife inhabit the hollows and ridges of the Roan foothills in abundance.
There are 30 comfortable cabins, as well as RV and tent camping at the 106-site campgrounds. Each cabin has a front porch with rocking chairs, fully outfitted kitchen, full bath, wood burning stove and gas/electric heat. Each campsite has a grill and picnic table and is located near a bathhouse with hot showers.
Visitors can hike along the creeks and ridges, tour the century-old Miller Farmstead or enjoy cross-country skiing in the winter months. There are approximately 12 miles of hiking trails and 2.25 miles of mountain bike trails. Difficulty levels range from easy to strenuous.

Davidson River Recreation Area offers camping and outdoor activities for the whole family. The campground boasts several loops of shaded campsites, as well as access to hiking trails, fishing spots, waterfalls and several nearby attractions within Pisgah National Forest. The forest is known for its hiking trails, several of which are near the campground. Hikers can challenge themselves with the 12.3-mile Art Loeb Trail, the 3.7-mile North Slope Trail or a 1.5-mile walking trail. The Davidson River offers excellent trout fishing, plus tubing and swimming, which are kid-friendly favorite activities. Visitors wishing to learn more about the area can attend educational programs in summer and fall.

This is such a great campsite. We have tent camped, cabin camped and RV camped here on several occasions. The cabins are awesome and each site is nice and private with great tree and brush cover separating sites. The hiking trails at the campground are very impressive. They range from easy to challenging and it is nice that you dont have to leave the grounds to enjoy a nice hike.
Then, down the road you find yourself at the Apple Orchard off of the Blue Ridge, which is an absolutely charming place. It feels like a scene from a most perfect movie.
Highly HIGHLY recommend this awesome campground/resort.

GuideBear den was a perfect location for the Blue ridge parkway. We stayed at a two cabin lot that had a hot tub. Bear den has everything from RV camp sites to a game room. There are private cabins a short walk from the camp sites. Lots of hiking trails, a fishing pond and a real bear den on site off one of the waterfall trails. The closest large city is Marion, but there are plenty of towns close by. The turn into the privately owned campground is off the Blue ridge parkway and there are multiple waterfalls, rivers, and viewpoints within 15 miles. A must see and stay!!

This is a brand new tent and cabin campground built by Duke Energy and run by McDowell county on Lake James. There is a boat ramp very close by, a fishing dock, picnic area, trails in and around the campground, and a seasonal Black Bear Marina Restaurant across the inlet or not far by road. All sites have tent pads and 2 parking spots. Many of the sites are a short walk from the car which affords privacy. There is a rental picnic shelter and a group csmping site. The rental camping cabins have 2 cots with a plywood base,( bring a mattress!).

I like this campsite. You have to be careful to book the correct kind of tent site if you want to be in a more wooded area. The camping cabins are really nice and spacious. It's a good site with some really good breakfast spots located just right next to the campsite itself
RangerAcross the road from the “resort and spa” that houses the rent-by-the-hour hot spring hot tubs. Situated along the beautiful French Broad River. They offer cabins (primitive to full amenities), RV sites, tent sites with electric, tent sites without and primitive tent sites way at the beach with no tables or fire rings. Plenty of shade and trees. Bath houses. The campground is now gated. The AT runs right in front of it as it passes through the adorable little town. There is a little outdoor outfitter, a couple restaurants... beautiful hikes which ever direction you go.

I enjoyed the drive out to this site, it is far enough off of the beaten path but still close to town. The site is a very easy drive to Boone and Tweetsie Railroad. We stayed at a camping cabin and it was really nice. The RVs are close to each other in proximity and RV sites are not separated by any brush or trees. We walked the country road for a nice walk each day. Overall it was a really nice KOA if you are in the area and wanting to explore Boone.

We were staying at a nearby campground in May 2022 and wanted to check out a waterfront campground for our next adventure. We followed GPS directions accurately and landed at Asheville River Cabins.
Asheville River Cabins is in the middle of an overhaul. There appeared to be around 4 original, rentable cabins, while the rest were undergoing major porch additions etc. There also seems to be a second phase of cabins going up immediately behind the original cabins. They are brand new and it was not clear from signage if they belong to Asheville River Cabins or not.
This property is waterfront (French Broad River) and had water/electric at each RV site. It is a work in progress!

We decided to rent a camping cabin for the weekend. The cabin was fine for what we needed for the weekend. I didn’t feel like the people that worked there were very friendly and I didn’t get the sense that they took a lot of pride in the campground. The bathrooms could have been swept and cleaned a lot better. There was trash around the campground that I felt would have been picked up at other campgrounds we have visited. We camp a lot...This campground has so much potential. It just needs a more welcoming staff and a little more attention to details. I’m usually a tent camper, so I’m not very picky. I might return for a quick weekend trip if I can’t find another place, but I can’t see myself staying there for a week.

In 2016 we stayed here for the first time in one of the camping cabins and I LOVE how rustic the cabins are here. Typically, the campsite would have been closed but that February it was really warm, so they opened earlier in the year. That weekend was super cold. The warm spell had ended. We bundled under 10 blankets, enjoyed a sweet campfire and basically had the entire campsite to ourselves and it was pretty.dang.cool. Then, this past October (2020) we went back to tent camp here with two of our best friends and although it rained all weekend, we still had the most amazing stay. The sites are well spaced and other campers are always super respectful here. They also have a really good Sunday breakfast brunch that is FANTASTIC and relatively cheap. The folks that run the place are really nice.

GuideWe had a great time! The campsites were clean and well-maintained, although the sides were fairly close together. It was comfortable during the weekdays, but started to get crowded during the weekend. You can walk to the river as well as the town. Highly recommend the Hot Springs hot tubs, Big Pillow Brewing Co for food/drinks, and Artisun for coffee and gifts. Verizon signal very poor and the campground WiFi was borderline unusable. Great place to unplug and disconnect, however!

This place was a 13 hour drive and so worth it. All of the cabins and trailers available to rent are so reasonably priced and have AC and fully fucntioning appliances. Every cabin or RV rental has its own private gated yard with your own firepit. Several dog parks and a private pond for the pups means days of fun for an active, social dog. Everyone is so kind, the women who run this place are so sweet and they were incredibly accomodating. The camp store has tons of treats and necessities for dogs and people, and a dog washing station and laundry are available communally. We spent our days hiking the nearby Chimney Rock and hanging around Lake Lure (FYI Dirty Dancing was filmed here whoa). We also checked out the Equestrian center which was an awesome recommendation of the staff and also dog friendly. Definitely recommended for people who like day hikes and adventures and coming back to a cozy camp cabin.
LegendGrandfather Campground is located about 15 minutes south of Boone NC and less than 10 minutes from the trailhead to Grandfather Mountain.
There is a new sign for the Grandfather Campground directly off HWY 105. Pulling in, you drive over a bridge with a beautiful view of the creek and immediately see an office to your right and a large grassy area and private gazebo to your left (I do not think the campground owns this gazebo).
RV's and tents occupy the first loop past the office. On the left side of the road are several tent sites (too close for our preference - but in a pinch - it works!) On the right side of the road are RV sites that back up to the creek. A bathhouse is centrally located for this loop. As you continue on, you pass several simple camping cabins and then a variety of different sleeping arrangements depending on the size of your group. There is fishing and a playground but to us, the most valuable amenity of this site is the proximity to Grandfather Mountain. We can be at the trailhead within 10 minutes for a great hike to the top of Grandfather Mountain!

Tent space is nice, flat, grassy, and well cared for. Sits on a river. Cabins are clean. Showers are hot and clean. Big bonfire area in the middle. Owners are super nice, there’s a place to get a hot meal in case you forget your food. Located between Waynesville NC and Pisgah on Hwy 276. Convenient to the Blue Ridge Parkway as well. Great riding in the area, one of my favorite spots to stay.

Great sites right by the river for tents, various unique styles of “cabin camping” along the river and off the river, great staff (brings wood to you!) and if you have family members who don’t wanna rough it they have a great bar(beer, food, music)by the river with WIFI. Everybody wins. Launch your raft or theirs and enjoy the outdoors.

We stayed at the Blue Moon Cottage/RV in May 2022. It was wonderful! The directions we received from Jody were clear and detailed. We easily followed directions through the field and parked right below the camper.
The porch was very welcoming as was the RV! It has a queen bed, bathroom/shower combo, 2 gas burners, microwave, sink, fridge/freezer, a table inside, and a table outside. We loved how everything was labeled - every light switch, knob, valve etc. There were detailed instructions on every inch of camper, including how to flush! (important right?) She really has thought of everything- spices, Nespresso, lighters, flashlights, bottle openers - it was incredibly well stocked!
The bed was very comfortable as well as the little dinette for working purposes. We enjoyed most of our time on the porch watching the mountain colors change as we ate dinner. Did I mention the solar flame torches? They come out at dusk and line the driveway and are beautiful! We enjoyed dinner on the porch, followed by lounging in the lounge chairs and the AWESOME, color changing, super strong jetted hot tub!
This RV was about 20 minutes from Asheville city center- not a bad ride at all! We enjoyed tubing on the river, drinking some local brew and some excellent food!
This field was adjacent to Beaverdam Free Will Baptist church, gazebo and Cemetary. We could see all from our porch, but nothing was obtrusive or offensive. We enjoyed mountain views for hours, watching a storm move in and out. The field is full of fireflies! They began their nightly show looking like holiday lights in the field and the trees. Highly recommend this stay!

This is an absolute top-notch campground. It just opened in the spring of 2020 and I can already tell this is going to be a very popular place.
First, the staff is incredible. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and goes out of their way to make you feel at home. The owner was onsite every day and checked in on us several times.
The camping options are very unique and diverse. They have your typical RV sites (all full hookups) and tent sites, all of which have green space around them. Our site backed up to a beautiful stream with some trees for hammocks and shade. The tent sites are clustered together next to a stream in the woods, providing tons of shade on hot days. Nearby are a few treehouses that you can rent, similar to old school sleep-away camping cabins. Around the corner from the tents are several vintage RVs, many from the 50s, that have been completely renovated with beautiful interiors and modern updates. They each have their own deck, fire pit, and grill. My mom stayed in one of these while we were visiting and loved it! There are also camping pods - basically an igloo shaped cabin that is good for a couple people. Yurts are just up the hill from those, alongside two beautiful tiny homes that are some of the most unique campground rentals I've ever seen. Book these early - we were here in late June and they were already full until October!
The amenities are very nice as well. There is a resort style pool with built in seating almost all the way around. It's next to a pavilion area with picnic tables, corn hole, a community fire pit, outdoor movie screen, and performance stage. Nearby is an inflatable jumping pad and volleyball net. I spoke with the owner and he has plans to add many other game such as bocce ball as well as complete construction on a playground and wooded play area for kids. You can also rent many campground games at the camp store such as spike ball and ladder ball. More hiking trails are being added, and a large dog park made exercising our pup easy.
Oh and the wifi is off the charts for a campground. Total coverage everywhere you go. I was getting 30/30 speeds at my site. I work remote so it was very important to have good internet, and Emberglow did not disappoint here! They obviously invested heavily in a quality network infrastructure and it shows.
The location is nice - off the main roads so you get plenty of peace and quiet, but only 20 minutes to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. It's easily accessible from Charlotte, Asheville, and Spartanburg, SC.
Every campground owner needs to come take a look at this place. This is what campgrounds should be aiming for - clean, modern, lots of nature, friendly staff, good prices, and fun activities. I was not paid or asked or endorsed in any way to do this review, I simply think this is an awesome place that you should come check out!

We arrived with a reservation and there was no spot because someone decided to stay longer and someone unreserved showed up. It was just not unorganized and no one seemed to want to move from the spot so we could park our camper. It was a unique campground and after overhearing lots of talk due to the place we were parked we learned they try and over pack the park with people. It’s not your ordinary state park or US park. There is definitely a vibe I’ve never seen before. More of a hippy vibe. We were given a dvd a lady made of here visions. No dogs were on leashes and no one seemed to care. Just bizarre. The river was beautiful if you could see passed the tents. Bathrooms were clean enough but very small. This campground sits on a half gravel/half paved road that is mostly one way as far as width. If you’re hauling a huge camper it’s gonna make you sweat getting to the campground. You will question if your even on the right road because it turns to gravel and cuts under a train bridge. The office was under remodel so there was no “working office” or store. You has to knock on the guys trailer(not creepy at all). They parked our camper in front of his since our spot was given away so we had many people thinking we were the camp manager. Very annoying. There is also a rafting company with cabin rentals in the same area so there are quite a few random people moseying around. It is in a private area but is not private. I would not recommend this place unless you are and old hippy that wants to raft the rapids. If you want a quiet woodsy getaway this is not it. You are likely to have strangers sitting on your picnic table and making themselves at home at your site.

Tucked quietly away only 10 miles southwest of Asheville, Lake Powhatan Campground(within Pisgah National Forest) is a popular but peaceful campground.

Three loops off to the left of the main entry(Big John Loop 1-21; Bent Creek Loop 22-35; Lakeside Loop 36-57)...just past Smokey the Bear...and then a 4th larger loop straight down the hill from the Entrance office and to the right(Hard Times Loop 58-97). Which is where the“luxury cabin tents” are located on a separate loop within. These large cabin tents appear nicely appointed, on an elevated wooden platform with tarred porch.
All four loops have a smattering of all types of sites...some that accommodate trailers, some offer pull-thru drives, some electric and water, some have steps up or down to gravel tent platforms. Something for everybody.
The restroom/shower house in each loop offers four(4) doors on one side. Two(2) outer doors are individual unisex bathrooms and the two(2) inner doors are individual showers. All are spacious, well-maintained and stocked. It was in the low 40’s at night and only the restroom and shower on the left side were heated, the right ones were not. I was advised that this campground and facilities are open year round. We stayed at site 28/29(a shared pull-through). Tents must remain on the gravel pull-through...bent a lot of tent stakes on that one. Water spigots are spaces evenly throughout the loops.
Lake Powhatan itself is a dammed reservoir. A picturesque setting, but more the size of a pond than a lake. There is a nice fishing dock and a separate swimming area. The feeder stream is stocked with rainbow and browns.
Trails abound...for hiking, biking and equestrian. Mountain biking seems all the rage. I was dismayed(as a lifelong cyclist) of the lack of common courtesy trail etiquette...like“on your left” or“passing.” Several bombed by without a word and most are narrow trails. Some education needs to take place.
Speaking of trails, the trailhead maps were not adequately informative and the campground was out of the pocket size. Cell service is pretty nonexistent so you can’t utilize some trail apps unless you preload them...Our campground neighbors got lost mountain biking. Locals know the trails intimately, but visitors do not. One trail leads to the NC Arboretum...a very worthwhile visit!...but is quite lengthy round trip. Tuesday was half off entrance at the arboretum for carloads...quite a deal at$8. Several local Craft breweries and Cider Mills close by...and you couldn’t throw a stone in any direction without hitting a bicycle shop. Shameless plug for the Bold Rock Cider Mill and their food truck...the smokehouse bacon burger and apple-grilled cheese sandwiches were excellent. Asheville has a REI and a Sportsman Warehouse nearby, but my favorite is the Frugal Backpacker(which was sadly closed during this visit).

This place is fantastic if you'd want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. This is the first time I've gone here but for the price of the cabins it's cheaper than staying local in a tent site

I have brought family here, planned a girls trip here, planned just nice getaways here.. etc. And I'll keep on coming back because this camping spot is incredible for the cabin or the rv camping experience. The sites are well spaced. The grounds are well planned. Everyone is so nice. It is just awesome out here.
TravelerWe had a great time relaxing by the camp fire, hiking the trails, and enjoying some time away front town/city life. It was quiet, semi private, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Sites range from tent to cabin, with electric, water and on some sites, sewer hook up. We had a camper van. The site was leveled well, so no jacks were needed to level up the van. Hikes lead to overlooks and waterfalls, and some are quite strenuous. The ground sparkles with mica, giving it a reflective, magical appearance. We had a relaxing and fun time and recommend this for campers. AAA discounts apply, to make it downright cheap to enjoy a getaway.
ScoutMy two teenage boys and I stayed in a“Cozy Cabin”. They are bigger than they look in the picture. There is a countertop next to the front door and plenty of room for all of our gear. There is a water spigot and electrical outlet on the outside and two outlets inside the cabin. The resort is kind of small but there are a few playgrounds and a small pond to go swimming and fishing in, and several hiking trails. I was impressed with how clean the cabins and bathrooms were.
GuideWe stayed here during ski season and it was great! Not very busy, which was fine and only 15 mins to the ski slopes. That trip we had a great experience.
On another occasion, over Labor Day weekend, we tried to get a spot but they were ful. So we decided to rent one of their cabins. Upon arriving, we found out that they had switched our cabin to a different one then the one we had originally booked, and it was so small (which would have been okay, but we had a young baby who needed to sleep in a port-a-crib, which did not fit anywhere in the cabin) but the real issue was that there was mold on the ceiling and coming down some of the walls. We immediately went down to the office, at first we were told there was nothing they could do. After I went momma-bear on them and let them know I would not be staying in a moldy cabin with a baby and demanded my money back, they finally agreed and gave us a refund. Luckily I was able to find a hotel that still had a room available.
So long story short: great for camping, beware of cabins.

Everything a small family with very young kids could need. We tent camped for two nights on the lower back end of the campsite, then rounded out our stay with one night in the cabin. The owners were extremely accommodating, since technically the cabin required multiple night's stay.
