    Statesville RV Park I-77

    Right off of Interstate

This KOA is RIGHT off of the interstate. If you are in midtravel and need a place to overnight this is a nice KOA for that. The camping cabins are cozy, we stayed in a single which has 1 dbl bed and twin sized bunk bed. Staff was very friendly. I wouldn't consider this a camping destination.

    Lake Norman State Park Campground

    Fantastic quiet get away

We stayed in the new glamping cabin #2. Very clean, comfortable bed, nice AC, lovely porch to relax on. All cabins are in walking distance to the bathrooms and showers. Those as well were pretty clean for a camp ground, I was pleasantly surprised. The path to the bathrooms light up at night so you can find your way very easy in the dark. Camp ground itself was very clean and I often saw the staff working on cleaning it and interacting with the campers. The designated swimming area was like a piece of heaven. Small not to overly packed, very clean beach. We plan on coming pack to do tent camping with our dog, fantastic family or romantic couple retreat.

    Cane Creek Park

A Great Place for the Whole Family.

Located just outside historic Waxhaw NC, Cane Creek is part of the NC Soil Conservative Sites. They offer day passes,$4.00 per car where you can launch you kayak canoe or fishing boat. If you like Bass Fishing, they rank as one of the best spots around. They have swimming areas for both day users and one for campers. This really is a gem within Union Co NC. The campground is on the other side of the lake. They have camping for RV’s, Cabin Rentals and tent sites for either large groups or individuals. The hiking trail is beautiful and takes you around the whole lake. Watch for horses, as this is a great place for riders too.

    Charlotte-Fort Mill KOA

Great for trip to Charlotte NC

We came here to do some trailer maintenance and because it is very close to home. We were not expecting it to be a great camping experience, but we’re pleasantly surprised! The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the campsites were clean, and the bath houses were newly updated and immaculate. The roads in the section we stayed in were a bit rough (a combination of asphalt and gravel), but perfectly fine for camping. Most of the sites have good shade, but unfortunately our site was in full sun. Our site had full hookups, and a picnic table that was pretty rickety. No fire ring. The sites are very close together, and most are back to back sharing a driveway. Personally we prefer a more secluded camping spot, but this KOA is perfect for an overnight on your way to another location, a trip to nearby Charlotte, or like us, utilizing the full hookups for some waterline maintenance.

    Cane Creek Park

    Great clean campground

We have stayed at Cane Creek 2x now and enjoy the park so much. Lake, hiking trails and nice wooded campsites with fire rings and close proximity to bath houses. Playground for kids, little store, friendly staff. Beach swimming area closed due to Covid but looks nice. Park on other side of lake has picnic shelters, more trails, frisbee golf and kayak rentals that will open after Covid. Only problem is that both times we visited there was a storm and power went out for hours. Can’t really do anything about that!

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

    Good

So, if you end up in a crap site you might drop those 4 stars to 3. Its going to be impossible to determine a great site from a bad without going there since the only pic they have online is from site 1. B loop, has a lot of RVs. A loop, has the amphitheater. C loop, felt like the smallest loop and really close to the entry hiking trail. We've stayed in both A and C. C loop, site 48, is where we stayed this trip. Its a good site. Close to the showers, which are clean and well maintained. Close to the trash bins and water spicket as well. Behind the site is a great little "valley" to explore if you have kids/dogs. Has awesome trees for hammocks and the tent pad doesnt slope. Did not love the fire pit at this site but the sites to the left and right are great. Overall, tons of sites and good clean facilities. The trails are plentiful so you shouldnt run out of places to explore.

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

Historical get away in the forest

The swaying of pine trees with the smell of the forest greets us at this easily accessible site in our motorhome. Electric and water hookups at our site, dump station available on the way out, camp host available. Picnic tables, fire pit available at our site. Lots of shade, plenty of trails that cover this State Park. The Kron house nearby, the swimming pool ( closed at time of our visit). The town of Albemarle 10 minutes away and Badin lake right down the mountain. Lots of history here just stop at the ranger station for information, maps and more.

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

Family friendly, clean, quiet considering close proximity of neighbors

Very family friendly camp ground. Sites are close together, but not too terrible. Sites include tent pad, fire ring with grate, table, lantern hook. Facilities we're kept nicely, host was very helpful and makes rounds in the evenings with firewood ($5 bundle). Hiked the trail head near the campground, to the river.. lovely hike NO RIVER ACCESS FOR FISHING though... Embankment is too steep, we learned this after the 2.5 mile hike with the kids... Went down the road to the lake the next day (they have boat rentals, though we didn't get one).

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

    Pretty Basic

Plentiful campsites, we arrived on a Friday without a reservation and were able to get a spot. There is a swimming pool, but we didn't swim. Some hikes nearby, but far from the swimming spots in the Uwharrie National Forest. No bathrooms near the campsites, but there were spigots with potable water. The tent pads were even and well packed. All sites had a picnic bench and a fire pit with a grate.

Camping cabins near Kannapolis, North Carolina provide convenient access to the Piedmont region's mix of hardwood forests and lake environments. The area sits at approximately 700 feet above sea level with a moderate climate allowing for year-round camping. Most cabin sites are located within a 30-mile radius of Kannapolis, making them accessible for weekend getaways without extended travel time.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Lake Norman State Park Campground offers both bank fishing and boat access to the 50-square-mile lake. "I have camped all across the US and this was the nicest and cleanest campground I have ever been in. Fantastic experience. I highly highly recommend!" notes Andrew G. The park features several fishing piers where campers can catch bass, crappie and catfish.

Hiking trails: Lake Norman State Park Campground maintains multiple trail systems ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. "We fished, rode bikes, hiked and saw plenty of wildlife. Not too close to the neighbors, and the camp host were nice," reports Caleb S. Most trails range from 1-5 miles in length and connect to various camping areas.

Swimming options: Several campgrounds offer swimming facilities during warm months. Dan Nicholas Park features both water recreation and additional attractions. "The park has more to do other than the campground it is a wonderful place if you have young kids," explains Eddie B. The park charges small fees for certain attractions, with combo tickets available for families.

Fall foliage viewing: Morrow Mountain State Park Campground showcases spectacular autumn colors from September through early November. "We exhausted ourselves hiking and canoeing and much more stuff to do! Nice sites with electric hookups. Firewood available," reports Sara C. The park's elevation provides views across the surrounding countryside during peak color season.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Some campgrounds offer more secluded cabin options than others. "The glamping cabin was very clean, comfortable bed, nice AC, lovely porch to relax on. All cabins are in walking distance to the bathrooms and showers," reports one visitor to Lake Norman. At Lake Curriher Wilderness, "The cabins here are also great. Clean and nice location. I would suggest the overlook cabin," recommends Ben S.

Well-maintained facilities: Cleanliness ranks high in camper priorities. "The campground is well kept and clean. The staff and the camp host were very courteous. It was a very quiet stay. The bathhouse was new and well maintained," notes Robert D. about his Lake Norman experience.

Family-friendly amenities: Midway Campground Resort offers multiple recreation options beyond basic camping. "This is a small, family-friendly campground. There is a pond for fishing, a nice pool, a jump pad, playground, arcade, and mini-golf. Plenty for kids to do," notes Joy B. Most of these facilities operate seasonally from spring through early fall.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Many campers report regular wildlife sightings. "Very clean and quite and very close to Charlotte. Nice, moderate hiking trails. Swimming and kayaking. You'll probably see deer but have never seen a bear," reports Fletcher S. about Lake Norman State Park.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin sites require advance booking, especially during summer and fall weekends. At Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort, "You can purchase Carowinds tickets right here and ride a shuttle all day long to the park rather than fight traffic. They enforce the rules really well so quiet time is actually just that," explains Nate G.

Bathroom access: Facilities vary significantly between campgrounds. "The bathhouse was new and well maintained. I would recommend this place to anyone," notes Robert D. about Lake Norman. However, at other locations like Elmore RV Park, "There are no amenities, no shower houses. No frills," according to Deanna L.

Seasonal considerations: Operating hours and amenities change throughout the year. "The gates close at 5pm during the fall/winter. Slightly around that time, the retired police chief came around to introduce himself and give his cell number. He is just up the street and was kind to offer this for extra safety," explains Shannon S. about Lake Curriher Wilderness.

Noise factors: Some campgrounds experience more noise than others. Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort experiences "nighttime noise was bothersome, not sure where it was coming from, likely outside the campground," according to Molly F. Similarly, Statesville RV Park I-77 has highway noise due to its proximity to the interstate.

Tips for camping with families

Entertainment options: Cobble Hill RV Campground offers multiple family attractions on-site. "Such a great little campground, nice wooded sites, lake, playground, pool and bonefires and djs on holidays. Trails and fresh eggs in camp store from chickens on site. Goats and a horse also live here," shares Wendy M. These amenities are included in camping fees.

Kid-friendly environments: Dan Nicholas Park creates an engaging atmosphere for younger campers. "We live just a few miles from Dan Nicholas, but love to 'get away' there any chance we get. Plenty to do, super nice folks, and roomy, shady sites. The kids take their bikes, but even without them, they stay plenty busy," explains Lisa M.

Supervised swimming: Lake Norman State Park provides structured swimming areas with safety measures. "The beach is nice but gets very busy during the summer months. Lots of hiking trails, with lots of people using the grills etc.," notes I.R. Most swimming areas operate from late May through early September.

Educational opportunities: Several campgrounds offer nature programs for children. "Rangers give guided informative hikes (a mile or so) at different times in season and there are plenty of hiking trails," explains Wolf T. about Lake Norman State Park. These programs typically run on weekends during peak season.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds in the area have uneven terrain. At Morrow Mountain State Park Campground, "Site 98 in the electric loop is for tent and pop up campers, but is not pop up camper friendly. The ground is very uneven," warns Jen P. Bringing leveling blocks is recommended.

Road conditions: Access roads vary in quality and width. "The roads between the sites we a bit tight- it did not effect us as the park was not full but it could be a problem in peak season," notes Gus S. about Carowinds Camp Wilderness. Big rigs should call ahead to confirm access.

Hookup availability: Electric and water connections vary between cabin sites. At Morrow Mountain, "Nice sites with electric hookups. Firewood available," reports Sara C. Many cabins offer 30-50 amp service, but verify before booking if specific electrical needs exist.

Extended stay options: Some locations accommodate longer-term arrangements. "We stayed at this location for 10 days. The campground is well kept and clean," notes Robert D. about Lake Norman State Park. Midway Campground Resort also "offers long-term sites if you need to stay in the area for a while," according to Joy B.
