Just 30 miles north of Winston-Salem, Hanging Rock State Park is located in the Sauratown Mountain Range. Named for the early Saura peoples who once inhabited the area, this range towers over the surrounding country, with peaks reaching nearly 2600 feet in elevation. The park derives its name from the large quartzite escarpment that “hangs” over the valley below. Established in 1936, the park initially encompassed 3100 acres, but has grown to 7900 acres since 2015. With its proximity to the suburban areas of Stokes County, the park serves as a backyard playground for hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, rock climbers, paddlers, anglers and campers.

The 73-site campground in Hanging Rock State Park is an ideal basecamp for enjoying all the outdoor activities the park has to offer. Campsites can accommodate tents, popups and limited RVs; there are no hookups or dump stations at this location. Each site is equipped with picnic tables, grills and tent pads. Drinking water is available at several locations in the campground, and there are two bathhouses with hot showers. There are also five primitive group campsites with picnic tables and fire circles; drinking water and vault toilets are available nearby. If you don’t feel like roughing it, the park also offers 10 vacation cabins. Each of these are equipped with a kitchen, bathroom and sleeping accommodations for up to six.

When you’re ready to play, there are more than 20 miles of multiuse trails in Hanging Rock State Park for hiking, biking and riding. Trails vary in length and difficulty, so drop by the visitor center and pick up a trail map. For the mobility impaired, there is a 0.1-mile path to the Rock Garden. Anglers can enjoy casting for bass, sunfish, and catfish either by boat or wading on the park’s small lake. Canoe and rowboat rentals are available for paddling on the lake, or you can bring your own gear for paddling or fishing on the Dan River. Rock climbing is permitted on the 400-foot-high Cook’s Wall and Moore’s Wall. For just kicking it under the trees, the park has several picnic areas, as well as an exhibit hall and concession stand.

    Right off of Interstate

This KOA is RIGHT off of the interstate. If you are in midtravel and need a place to overnight this is a nice KOA for that. The camping cabins are cozy, we stayed in a single which has 1 dbl bed and twin sized bunk bed. Staff was very friendly. I wouldn't consider this a camping destination.

Close to town but far enough away

I enjoyed the drive out to this site, it is far enough off of the beaten path but still close to town. The site is a very easy drive to Boone and Tweetsie Railroad. We stayed at a camping cabin and it was really nice. The RVs are close to each other in proximity and RV sites are not separated by any brush or trees. We walked the country road for a nice walk each day. Overall it was a really nice KOA if you are in the area and wanting to explore Boone.

Awesome sites/camping cabins and GREAT river tubing experiences

The staff here is INCREDIBLY friendly and the check-in building/store is small but mighty, offering items like local honey, local preserves and camping/swimming/tubing accessories.

We stayed in the camping cabins located on the hill behind the store. It was so quiet & offered a beautiful view of the river from the picnic table. We took part in one of the offered tubing experiences and it was so cool. You can rent a tube to place a cooler inside of so you can tube down the river with beverages and snacks in tow. The end of the rafting experience puts you right there back at the campsite.

    This is a great place.

    So much GONE

If you have low expectations of a RESORT, they won’t meet them. I was almost shocked that both pools would open on the Memorial Day weekend, almost. Adult, not allowed to have an adult pool I forgot, lower pool closed.
The hot tub is filled with concrete. The E bathhouse was closed due to no Hot water.
The lake has so much grass in it (used to stock with Carp) it’s scary to paddle on.
The lake has no peers, docks, benches and just a fraction of the beach it used to have.
Thousand trails, not so much since they cut the trees down. Oh, I forgot to mention, 80-ish camping spots where just added. That made for a very crowded…..everything.

    Decent Stay

We stayed with family and reserved a cabin. Our two family members reserved two RV sites.

The cabins were wonderful and I would highly recommend them BUT... there is no late check in, and we were not warned of that at all, so when we got in at 10pm no key was left for us to get into our cabin. We had to spend the night in my dad's RV on one of the foldouts- if he wasnt there; who knows where we would have stayed.

I do not really recommend the RV sites, I didnt like the way they had the waste lines set up, and i kept smelling raw sewage.

Once we were IN our cabin, I must say- it was one of the nicest cabins out there and the whole family hung out with is at our cabin site since it had more privacy, didnt have a sewage smell and then was right next to the lake/pond. We also rented a canoe and had fun canoeing around the pond/lake

    Fantastic Campground

Fancy Gap CC is a great small campground with a rustic hotel, cabins, tent camping, and RV/Trailer hook ups. I've stayed here before tent camping, which was nice. This time I was caught in traffic and they had a cabin available, better than pitching a tent in the dark and rain. The cabins are sturdy, very clean, pet friendly, and complete with a refrigerator/microwave and coffee maker. The bath house is relatively new and kept very clean. The whole campground is tidy. You can tell tell the owners love the place. If Fancy Gap is relatively close to your travel plans, I highly suggest you visit for yourself.

    Family friendly

Everything a small family with very young kids could need. We tent camped for two nights on the lower back end of the campsite, then rounded out our stay with one night in the cabin. The owners were extremely accommodating, since technically the cabin required multiple night's stay.

    Enjoyed our stay immensely

We stayed at Blue Bear Family Campground on Thanksgiving evening and the following weekend last year. The staff were extremely helpful, arranging items so we could come in Thanksgiving evening without disturbing their family time, at my request. It was me, my 2 dogs, 2 cousins, and my nephew. Our campsite didn't have any direct neighbors until Friday evening, and even then, they were not close enough to disturb us. The campsites are spread out well, and the owner showed me a few places they plan to expand, also explaining that they want to keep everything spread out to avoid the cramped camping feeling. The property itself has miles of trails available, although we didn't get a chance to test them out ourselves this trip. In addition to tent sites, Blue Bear offers RV sites, cabins, and teepee rentals as well. Blue Bear is a hidden gem that I cannot wait to visit in the near future for further exploration.

    Great Family Camping

We stayed here while visiting friends who lived in the Salisbury area and stayed in Cabin 1. The cabins are REALLY nice, I was very impressed. We walked the RV sites and spotted several that were also very nice as well. They each seemed to offer a decent bit of privacy, which is nice. The pool was well located but busy, which was okay all the families and kids were having a great time and that was so nice to see. I enjoyed sitting near the pond and just watching the ducks swim. The best part was getting fresh eggs from the check-in store each morning... And I mean... Fresh Eggs. Really cool place.

    Great Campground

We stayed one night at the Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground in our Riverside Retro 199FKS - and absolutely loved it! We did choose on of the 4 pull through sites which provide a great view but they are along the ring road so they are not really private. The back in sites appear to be roomy and rather private. They also offer cabins and tent sites. The couple that own/run the park are super nice and are huge dog lovers. They made me, my wife and our two large dogs very welcome. The park is right off the Blue Ridge Parkway and US52 in Fancy Gap. Also accessible near I77. We are going again in a week for a longer stay.

    Fantastic quiet get away

We stayed in the new glamping cabin #2. Very clean, comfortable bed, nice AC, lovely porch to relax on. All cabins are in walking distance to the bathrooms and showers. Those as well were pretty clean for a camp ground, I was pleasantly surprised. The path to the bathrooms light up at night so you can find your way very easy in the dark. Camp ground itself was very clean and I often saw the staff working on cleaning it and interacting with the campers. The designated swimming area was like a piece of heaven. Small not to overly packed, very clean beach. We plan on coming pack to do tent camping with our dog, fantastic family or romantic couple retreat.

This campground has the potential to be more. It is small and quaint, shaded, and limited facilities. Has a small cabin and a small bunkhouse. Great place for camping, plenty of tent camp, also plenty sites for campers with 30 & 50 amp service with water, dump station available onsite also. Best canoeing and kayaking on new river, class 2 & 3 rapids on the 10 mile float, worth the $20 shuttle to take you up river to float right back to camp ground. Blue Bear Mountain Camp

    Mountain Meadow

This campground is 10 to 15 minutes north of Boone, NC in a small town called Todd. It offers RV, drive in and hike in tent sites and also teepee camping. My trip was from a few years ago and after checking the website and looking around it looks like a few things have been added but here's my review from 2014. You first pull into a big meadow surrounded by forest where most of the campsites are. There's a loop with a bathhouse in the middle and all of the rv sites along the edge, the drive in tent sites are also visible from here. Just outside of the loop is a small cabin that is the check-in station with a small storage shed next to it. The wooden "board and batten" siding on the cabin give the whole place a cool old timey feel. They also have a pinzgauer "cool military truck" parked outside to help deliver gear to some of the remote hike in sites if you need it. All in all, this place was awesome and I would love to go back.

Great spot right on the Blue Ridge Pkwy!

Camped in one of 5 tent camping spaces. They also have cabins / RV spaces and a motel. Check in was quick and the people running the campground were so friendly and great to deal with! Each site has a water pump and power. And the bathhouses are immaculate - showers are nice and hot and have good pressure. Firewood and fire starter available for purchase. Laundry room on site. Would absolutely stay here again!

    Great campsite

Like a lot of the other reviewers I used this as a stopover but the campground is very nice with a lot of cool features, including some clever cabins.

It seems like a great place for kids with a pool with a waterslide.

The camp store is well provisioned and each site that I saw has a patio and a fire bowl.

Overall, ver pleasant and I'm glad I'll be staying on my way home.

    Wytheville KOA

    Beautiful campground, uncomfortable bed

There are a lot of good things to say about this campground and one negative.  We stayed in a camper cabin to break up a long drive and the mattress was so thin that we could easily feel the metal frame through the "mattress" (really a thin pallet--hence the 3 stars, rather than 5). This KOA really needs to upgrade their mattresses, especially if they're charging such a high price for a cabin without a bathroom. Now onto the good stuff: it's a clean campground with a nice pool area and good camp store. The bowling alley was great and the on-site cafe has really good pizza. Tent campers have good options: I liked the 3 sites near the camp store because they were grassy and roomy enough for both tent and canopy. Other tent sites at the back of the campground were smaller, level, and had gravel pads. RV sites to either side of the fishing pond were mostly level and looked easier to navigate than the ones at the back of the campground; however, RV sites at the back had more shade. Had the bed been comfortable, I would have given this place 5 stars. I would be happy to return again (but this time as a tent camper).

    SO MUCH FUN!

We were able to spend a couple of weeks enjoying the park. We stayed in one of the cabins after the high season.  Comfortable and cozy, we really enjoyed our morning walks along the trails and lake.  We spent one evening playing in the arcade room where I may currently hold the high score on one of the pinball machines and got to have lazy days around the park.  We enjoyed the area so much!  The staff was extremely friendly and helpful.

They are continuously improving the park love seeing what they are doing as they keep going.

    Absolutely beautiful

We came here as our second ever camping trip and it wasn’t exactly what we were expecting but it was definitely an adventure. It was beautiful and quiet and relaxing. The only thing we were not happy about is the insane amount of bugs in the bathroom. But, ya know North Carolina summers.
