Canebrake Horse Camp in Uwharrie National Forest features 28 campsites with parking spurs specifically designed for horse trailers, including four double sites. Each site includes electrical hookups, tie posts, tack tables, picnic tables, grills, fire rings, and lantern posts. The campground accommodates up to two vehicles per site and maintains clean facilities despite heavy use during peak season. Horse owners find the camp host particularly attentive to equine needs, ensuring both horses and riders remain comfortable and safe throughout their stay. Located near Troy, North Carolina, approximately 30 miles from Carthage, this established campground provides direct access to the extensive trail system within the national forest.

The extensive trail network surrounding Canebrake connects riders to miles of scenic routes through the Uwharrie Mountains, which serve as foothills to the Appalachians. Trails accommodate various skill levels, from beginner-friendly paths to more challenging terrain for experienced riders. Water access points along the trails allow horses to drink and cool off during rides. While some horse clubs frequent the area on weekends with their trailers, weekday visits typically offer more solitude on the trails. Uwharrie Hunt Camp, located closer to the OHV trails than some other forest campgrounds, offers an alternative camping option at just $5 per night with rustic, grassy sites. The surrounding countryside features rolling hills and varied terrain, making this region particularly attractive for extended trail riding adventures throughout the year.

Dispersed Camping off Falls Dam Trail

Large group sites surrounded by OHV activities

This is/was marked as dispersed camping but this is primarily an OHV area, with a shooting range nearby that can be heard from some campsites. Most, if not all, of the campsites are intended to be large group sites. The empty site we found was filled with trash, discarded tents, air mattresses, and trashed electronics from OHVs. There's so much trash we would not even be able to take it all out with us if we wanted to. This may be a national forest, but it is not peace and quiet as one would expect from "dispersed and primitive" camping.

Crosswinds Campground — Jordan Lake State Recreation Area

      Quiet, clean, spacious

The sites are very large, long and wider at the back, plenty of room for a big group or family. The bathrooms look new and they are clean. Here during the week so it's very empty and quiet.

Crosswinds Campground — Jordan Lake State Recreation Area

      Great Camp

We visited Crosswinds campground at Jordan Lake State Park on the worst heatwave of the year. The great thing about this area is that the sites a well shaded. We were about 50 yards from the lake, with the wind blowing we still were comfortable all day. We stayed on Loop A, which is my favorite loop at the park. There’s no electricity or water at the sites. There are water spickets throughout the loop with potable water. The site is awesome! There’s a small pond beside it. The neighboring sites are close, but regular conversations can not be heard.this loop is always quiet even when there are a lot of people, but it’s never been full when I’m there. I didn’t do good with photos except for the food.

Crosswinds Campground — Jordan Lake State Recreation Area

      Crosswinds Campground July 2026

Decent campground in a beautiful location along Lake Jordan. Crosswinds Campground is one of several sites on the lake. We chose this location since the gates stay open all the time, while other sites have a curfew that can lock you out for the night.

The staff are super friendly and helpful. There’s apparently a camp host whom we never met and they’re on the site next to ours (not sure if they’re supposed to greet us or help us get acquainted with the site, but the staff member at check in was great and did all that when we arrived).

Loop C is quiet, very few children, and less road noise compared to the other loops, but doesn’t have the same access to the lake.

Site C50 is conveniently located close to the bath house, has a large fire pit with adjustable grill, picnic table, and hookups for water and electricity. We’re in a tent, so really just use the electricity. The picnic table here should be replaced, as the wood seems to be rotting, but still does the job. There are a few sites in loop C that do have direct access to the lake, but those tend to be booked all of the time. We explored one last night and couldn’t believe it was vacant and how much nicer it seemed.

Bathrooms are not as clean as I would like, but I bring disinfectant wipes to wipe the toilet before use. Showers are fine, but use an annoying motion sensor to turn the water on/off. Showering at night is annoying with the bugs because the bathhouse is lit like a beacon (probably for safety). Waiting for the daytime is a better experience. Also, there isn’t a washing station for dishes, and we do that at our site.

Firewood can be purchased by the staff at the campground entrance; however, the exact same firewood is almost $4 fewer at a Refuel station down the street. Definitely stop into that gas station store for things you might need.

Overall, really good experience staying here, some annoying things, but won’t ruin your stay.

      Great scenery and bathhouse

I don’t have any complaints about this campground! Sites are nice and feel like you aren’t close to anyone else. Very pretty area, quiet. Newest bathhouse I have ever seen at a state park! Awesome showers.

      Double L Farms Campground

      Lumberton NC

Our host, Brain and Lisa are great. Brain was there when we arrived to make sure we had everything we needed for hook up and helped with parking. Lisa gave very good directions to their location. Very peaceful, loved the animals. Will stay here again.

      Arrowhead Campground

Great base to explore the area

We stayed one night at Arrowhead Campground while checking out some of the nearby trails, including the Badin Lake Trail, which is just a short drive away and offers great views of the lake and surrounding forest. The campground itself is well laid out, with sites nicely spaced apart so it doesn’t feel crowded. The paved campground loops are in great shape and make driving through easy, even for larger rigs. Several areas offer pleasant views of Badin Lake, adding to the relaxing atmosphere. Overall, Arrowhead Campground felt quiet, clean, and well maintained—an excellent base camp for exploring Uwharrie National Forest, even if just for a quick overnight stay.
