      Rocky Neck State Park Campground

Mid May - Mid week quiet and l9vely

Camped early in the season mid week, and it was nice and quiet. The "new" park rangers are take their jobs delightfully serious.

Our site had plenty of sun for solar but in seagull loop there is loads of shade

      Rv park

Cute Rv park. Very family friendly, the women who at the office are also incredibly nice and helpful! Seems like a lot of people either live full time or come on weekends but we were able to book a spot for a week.

      Quick Trip

Picked up a one way rental RV on the way to Florida. I arrived early afternoon and was met quickly and shown to my spot and helped with all the hookups and “lay of the land” Very easy and helpful.

      Niantic KOA

      I mean wow!!

So much going on! They will give free shuttle rides to 3 beaches & downtown Niantic, CT.

We had tried to get a deluxe location and not completely booked. This is the weekend before Labor Day and they were vanishing point the owner / shuttle driver, John, asked us if we would want to move on Sunday after a bunch of people moved out. And we said absolutely because we're going to be here for 3 more nights.

And it is huge and amazing! If you want to pay a little extra for the deluxe request slot 92!

      Our go-to spot

      Great amenities, staff and location

Charming, full of wonderful amenities and nice extras. Nice staff, fun coin scavenger hunt, great pool, well stocked store, wide sites, lots of grass/trees and space to stretch out. Missing full hook ups but the staff and overall vibe more than make up for it. Community garden was something we hadn’t seen before - super fun.

      Wildwood State Park Campground

Nice campground with lots of sites

I've been going to this campground every summer for at least 5 years. Recently they became very stringent about parking to vehicles at the site making it very difficult to visit with a family and 2 vehicles. I usually host group camping trips and the single vehicle rule makes that very difficult.

That aside, this is a very nice campground with various kinds of sites. You can find sites that are less wooded and better suited to group camping, as well as sites that are a little more secluded. This is one of my favorite campgrounds solely because there are platform sites so I can place my tent on a concrete or wooden platform. There is a separate area for RVs vs tents. There is also a store where you can get a cup of coffee in the morning and lots of goodies throughout the day.

There are hiking trails and you can walk to the beach. Note - it is a downhill walk to the beach. The beach is fairly clean and has a small boardwalk.

There are lots of stores nearby as well as orchards to pick your own fruits. I stayed there one weekend and went to Splish Splash waterpark that's not far away. There is also a Tanger Outlet nearby. I've been there during a full on thunderstorm and watched as the trees swayed in the wind.

Lovely campground with lots of activities to entertain you.

      Niantic KOA

      Future potential?

We generally only stay in KOAs or similar RV parks when we need showers, laundry, or a dump station. This one was in a convenient location plus many campgrounds had not yet opened for the year when we were there. It had rained for a few days before our arrival and that did not help our first impression as we drove on the rutted and muddy road to our site. There was a sign that improvements are underway, but I am not sure what those planned improvements are and when they will be implemented.

      On the plus side:

*Friendly and helpful staff. Not sure why when we are given a map an employee escorts us to our site but that is a KOA thing. Later an employee asked if I wanted help carrying our clothes to the laundry.

      * Warm showers (but it did take a while for the water to get warm)

*Brand new pool that was uncovered but it was way too cold in April to use*Sites were spaced a decent amount of space apart (although there is little physical separation). This was helped by the fact that there was no one on either side of us during our stay.

*In season, there are many activities to occupy families (pool, playground, mini golf, daily firetruck rides, complimentary shuttle into the town of Niantic); however, we could not take advantage of most of these.

*Reasonably priced laundry, although the washing machines were smal, and it took two to do what should have been one load. However, the dryers give you 60 minutes so although it took longer to dry, I only had to use one.

      On the negative side:

*Unmaintained roadways. The main one was once paved but has not been maintained; others were dirt (and mud after a rain)

*High price for what we received. Not sure if we received an off-season rate but at $87 per night for a water/electric site and not being able to take advantage of amenities seemed high.

*Allowing political flags to be displayed at sites. I understand that on private property, this can be allowed at the owner's discretion, but this was offensive to us.

Again, this is not our preferred type of camping. Initially, I struggled to give this two stars but once the rain stopped, our stay improved somewhat.

    Guide to Westhampton Beach

Camping sites near Westhampton Beach sit along the eastern Long Island shoreline where tidal marshes and barrier beaches create a distinct coastal ecosystem. The area experiences moderate Atlantic climate with summer temperatures typically ranging 75-85°F and spring/fall temperatures of 55-70°F. Camping options span from oceanfront glamping tents with platform bases to traditional wooded RV sites scattered within a 30-mile radius.

    What to do

Beach exploration at Rocky Neck State Park: This Connecticut park features a combination of sandy beaches and rocky shoreline perfect for exploring tidepools. As one visitor noted, "The walk to the beach area was very serene... sunset scenery is beautiful! Kids were roaming freely and safe!" The park maintains walking trails connecting camping areas to beach access points.

Vineyard visits in wine country: Wildwood State Park Campground serves as a gateway to Long Island wine region. "My wife and I love this campground. It is right at the entrance to wine country on Long Island and has a beach on the Long Island Sound. (A little rocky on the north shore)," shares one camper. Multiple vineyards lie within 15-minute drives of the campground.

Waterfront activities: The camping region features both bay and ocean access points. "A short walk from the ocean to the bay, both accessible by walking from your campsite. No shade so be prepared to wake early if you're in a sweltering tent," notes one visitor about the shoreline access. Kayak rentals and fishing opportunities exist at multiple water access points.

    What campers like

Dual-water experience: Smith Point County Park provides access to both bay and ocean from a single camping location. A visitor explains, "Our 36ft motorhome backed up to a raised balcony overlooking the bay. Less than 100 feet from the front of our site was the beach and the Atlantic Ocean view." The park maintains walking paths between the two water bodies.

Family-friendly grounds: Camping facilities throughout the region emphasize family experiences. "Nice campground with lots of sites. You can find sites that are less wooded and better suited to group camping, as well as sites that are a little more secluded," reports one Wildwood State Park visitor. Most campgrounds maintain multiple playground areas and organized weekend activities.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Local campgrounds offer chances to observe native wildlife. "The North Shore experience with high bluffs, sandy calm beaches along the Long Island Sound, and views of CT across the water... lots of deer, pretty good birding," explains a Wildwood visitor. Early morning and evening hours provide optimal wildlife viewing conditions.

    What you should know

Site spacing considerations: Many campgrounds in the region have closely spaced sites. "It's a fun campground, has a great beach & great bathroom facilities. It doesn't have that much of the camping feel, though, as there's not many trees in the campsite area and the sites are so close together," cautions one Wildwood State Park visitor. Weekends typically see full capacity at most campgrounds.

Weather protection needed: Indian Island County Park sites have limited shade coverage. "Camp site itself was pretty flat, had a water station, bathrooms were well kept, no fire ring (BYOFP)," notes a camper. Summer camping requires shade structures, particularly for tent campers.

Booking timing: Glamping close to Westhampton Beach, New York requires advance planning. "Very Busy! Close quarters! Can be loud and neighbors are ignorant of rules," warns an Indian Island County Park camper. Premium sites with water views typically book 3-6 months in advance for summer season.

    Tips for camping with families

Activities beyond beaches: Riverdale Farm Campsites provides structured activities for younger visitors. "Great Value and Nice Family owned business. The lake is perfect... the playground is nice. They did a show on the beach one night that was fun too. We did bingo too," shares a regular visitor. Most family-oriented campgrounds offer weekend activity schedules.

Multiple playgrounds: Niantic KOA provides structured play areas for different age groups. "So many activities for kids and family. Well maintained facilities. Kind and helpful staff," notes a visitor. Glamping accommodations near Westhampton Beach typically include access to shared playground facilities.

Noise expectations: Family camping areas maintain moderate noise levels. "It is a little bit of a bummer on the rental for a firepit but the bathrooms are big and spacious. The showers could be a little bit warmer," mentions a Wildwood State Park camper. Quiet hours generally start at 10pm but evening social activity continues in common areas.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup limitations: Rocky Neck State Park Campground provides basic services for RVs. "RV pull through sites were fantastic. It was a great campground for maiden voyage in new rig. Plenty of amenities," reports one visitor. Most regional campgrounds offer water and electric hookups but fewer provide sewer connections at individual sites.

Site leveling needs: Sites require minimal leveling in most locations. "Stayed at site 12. Sites are great overlooking the bay. Bathroom lights are bright. 10 would be better. I also like the corner sites as they are bigger," advises a Smith Point County Park camper. Premium glamping options near Westhampton Beach typically feature level wooden platforms as tent bases.
