    Mystic KOA

Awesome Sunsets at the Mystic KOA

Didn’t quite feel like camping, but it was still a lovely weekend away at the Mystic KOA. We decided to head down to check out the aquarium and stayed at a deluxe cabin. It was cute and clean and furnished with linens, cookware, utensils, kitchen essentials, keurig coffee maker/pods, and full-sized fridge. Only complaint was an odd, musty smell we couldn’t quite figure out.

The grounds are large with vast amounts of space. Be forewarned that it’s right off of 95, and the sound definitely carries. Trees are sparse in areas, but the sunsets were a nice trade off. Amenities seemed nice from what we could tell - cool outdoor movie screen, pools and playground, though we certainly didn’t get to enjoy these things in February.

    Charlie Brown Campground

    Well run Campground

WE come here every year with our group, RVing Women Northeast Network for our first rally of the season each year for a number of years,  The reason we come back is the way we are treated, because they have pavilions that have a campfires pit and the roof is made so it takes the smoke straight up out of the pavilion yet is protective of those under the roof from rain etc.  VERY enjoyable.  We all park around this Pavillon.  IT is well kept, kids are entertained by parents and fishing etc.  Parties are present but they have quiet hour and it seems to be obeyed.

    Mystic KOA

    Wasp Breeding Ground!

Pros: Helpful staff, morning garbage pickup, excellent laundry facility, plenty of activities and amenities for children. Cons: Wasps!! Wasps everywhere!! We did our best to keep them at bay by lighting some sage but they were persistent. Not much privacy back in the tent/cabin areas, camp sites very close together and people have the ability to stare right into your site.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

every campsite has its own fire pit with a grill attachment and a picnic table. my site was tent only and you couldn’t pull your car up to the site so unloading and loading was a hassle. beach is a short drive on site and the showers were one site over. I had a great time

    Wilderness Lake Park

    Cute place

My family and I stayed here a few years ago in the tent area. Not all sites are secluded, but we were the only ones so it was nice and private. At the time there was only one port-a-potty for the tent area we were in and no water source. It’s a dog friendly park which was good for us, our dog could swim in the lake with us. Cute patio overlooking the lake as well with seating. Wood delivery is awesome especially since tent area is a slight distance from office, but that is also a bonus so you’re away from the RV sites. Also price is reasonable for a private campground considering the rates a lot of other places charge.

    Highland Campground

    Older but lots to do

The campground is older, and the roads/driveways need work. For those looking for newer facilities, this isn't the place. There are no 50 amp sites. The rec hall and the bath houses are old, but we don't mind the old fashioned spots at times. Reminds me of camping as a kid. There are a lot of activities for the kids and adults. Shuffleboard, bocci ball, fishing, bingo, playground, pit luck dinners, etc. There is wifi available.

There are a lot of seasonal campers which can sometimes feel like you're intruding on their space. There is a page of rules to follow, the seasonals ignore them.

There is no black water hookup, only gray water. You have to have them clean out the black or dump on the way out.

    Odetah Camping Resort

Had no idea it was there!

Stayed in October 2018. Tucked away in the woods I never knew this was there! Beautiful pond and a good mix of seasonal and overnight sites as well as cabins. Plenty of areas to walk our dogs and have them swim. Playgrounds, bath houses throughout and fully stocked camp store with anything you could ever need. Organized events, cafe on site and quick drive (or Uber ride) to Mohegan Sun.

Guide to Groton

Yurt camping options near Groton, Connecticut provide convenient accommodations in woodland settings with direct access to coastal recreation areas. Most locations operate seasonally, with peak availability from May through October when temperatures average 65-80°F during summer months. Winter camping options are limited due to Connecticut's northern coastal climate, which brings cold winters with occasional snowfall.

What to do

Hiking trails: Near Rocky Neck State Park Campground, visitors access both coastal and woodland paths. "Beautiful campground right near the beach. Hiking trails along the coast line," notes Timothy R., highlighting the dual terrain options.

Beach exploration: Low tide offers unique coastal experiences at Rocky Neck. "You'll enjoy the low tide," mentions Todd J., referencing the expanded shoreline access during tidal changes. The beach area features distinctive rock formations along with sandy sections.

Fishing opportunities: Witch Meadow Lake Campground provides pond fishing while larger lakes exist nearby. "Small lake as well larger lakes in the surrounding area," explains Pauly P. Fish species include largemouth bass, sunfish, and catfish depending on the water body.

Outdoor activities: Odetah Camping Resort maintains tennis and basketball courts for guests. "Tennis & basketball games... every night we went to bed tired and looking forward to doing it all again the next day," writes one camper, describing the variety of recreation options available within the property.

What campers like

Swimming options: Sunfox Campground features both a pool and natural swimming. "Super clean, friendly environment very nice playground and pool plus a nice lake to swim and fish in," David P. reports, mentioning the dual swimming venues that accommodate different preferences.

Transportation services: Some campgrounds provide shuttle transportation to local attractions. According to Snooz H., "They will give free shuttle rides to 3 beaches & downtown Niantic, CT" at Niantic KOA, saving campers from driving to waterfront locations.

Weekend entertainment: Live music enhances the camping experience at certain locations. "Live band on Saturday night was nice," notes Michael C. about Strawberry Park, describing the regular entertainment schedule maintained during peak season.

River tubing: Water activities extend beyond lakes at some campgrounds. "We tubed down river, fished the pond, swam in the pool, did the hay ride, even attended the dance at night," explains Erik M. about Hidden Acres Campground, highlighting the river recreation not mentioned in most campground descriptions.

What you should know

Campground size considerations: Burlingame State Park Campground encompasses over 700 sites. "This is a HUGE state park campground with over 700 sites. The location is fantastic, but with this many sites, there are bound to be pros and cons," explains Jessica A., noting both advantages and drawbacks of large-scale camping operations.

Shower facilities: Policies vary regarding shower usage. "There is a $.50 fee for shower usage for 5 minutes" at Witch Meadow Lake Campground according to John L., illustrating that campers should prepare with quarters for showers at some locations.

Tent placement restrictions: Some campgrounds limit tent-only camping. "My site was tent only and you couldn't pull your car up to the site so unloading and loading was a hassle," explains Carli V. about Rocky Neck State Park, describing the logistics challenge for tent campers.

Child safety features: Special activity areas provide secure play environments. "The kids ride their bikes to the sports fields, the rec center for the pool and activities. Oh and my young children LOVE the air pillow, they have spent hours on there," explains Ryan C., mentioning the contained recreation areas at Strawberry Park.

Yurt camping comfort: For families seeking more comfort in Groton, Connecticut's camping scene, yurt options provide enclosed sleeping. Claire M. describes Sunfox Campground as "situated in a beautiful valley with a little pond, hiking trails, playground, jumping pillow, swimming pool and hot tub," indicating the amenities surrounding yurt accommodations.

Tips from RVers

Dump station access: Multiple disposal points exist at larger campgrounds. Andrew P. notes, "There are two dumping spots each with two dumps" at Burlingame State Park, providing necessary information for self-contained RVs planning longer stays.

Site leveling: Terrain varies even within single campgrounds. "Some level some not, some dirt sites, some grassy, some with a ton of shade, some out in the open," explains Andrew P., advising RVers to bring leveling blocks regardless of reservation details.

Utility connections: Hook-up options differ between parks and sites. "Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp," mentions Kevin J. about Wolf's Den Family Campground, indicating partial hookups predominate at certain locations.

Size restrictions: Older campgrounds may limit larger rigs. "Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers," warns Kevin J., highlighting access limitations for oversized recreational vehicles.
