  Wilderness Lake Park

  How did I not know about this place?

  Connecticut is LACKING when it comes to outdoor activities when compared to some of the places around the country. That being said, it's more rewarding when you find a little gem like Wilderness Lake Campground.

  While this is about 60% RVs, the tent sites are great. The host gave us a secluded spot in the back to the point I didn't feel like I was at a campground other than the fire ring. We didn't need bathrooms, water or electricity, but there was a bathroom within walking distance. It also looked like they were building a little outbuilding for Women and Men's bathrooms near the tent sites. 

  The lake was quiet and we saw kids swimming in it in the morning. There was a hiking trail on the property and the host mentioned they were building a Disc Golf course on the property. Whether you have an RV, want to Car Glamp or looking to feel deep in the woods, this place checks all the boxes. It's also conveniently located off I-84(exit 70).

  Lake Waramaug State Park Campground

  Quiet Rustic Camping

  My family has been camping at Lake Waramaug for over 20 years. I can say most of what’s been said is true or partially so but whether it’s bad or good depends on your point of view. Note that we are a Scout family and my husband and son have camped many days well off the grid with only the gear and food in their backpacks. That skews our point of view. 

  First off, Connecticut’s state campgrounds are not KOA’s. 

  Do not expect top of the line activities that private campgrounds have.

  What it does have are clean, large sites that are partially wooded and not out in the open. 

  The lake is great for kayaking, paddle boarding, canoes and for fishing. Bring your own gear but kayak and canoe rentals are available. The swim area is marginal- best for little ones. 

  This park is remote from all conveniences- pack it in or expect a drive. There have been several times I’ve driven to the Dunkin Donuts miles down the road for coffee but I find using a French press is more convenient. For takeout there’s the White Horse on 202. It’s ranked a top restaurant in the state - the food is good. 

  Never have we had issues with wildlife besides squirrels and ducks. Leave no trace is important - it keeps the unwelcome wildlife out. 

  There have been issues with the bathrooms off and on over the decades. It seems like they’ve finally fixed everything. Our trip of 7/27-28 showed everything was fine.

  The only on-site services are firewood and ice sales. The little food shack is out of business. 

  Yes, cell service is basically non-existent. Our trip this weekend was the first time we received more than 1 bar in 20 years. Actually we were a bit disappointed because this camp ground is a great place to disconnect and relax. Being forced to put away the devices is heaven in my mind. You can drive about 5+ minutes out and get cell service. Regarding rowdiness, of the 20+ times we’ve camped only twice was it a problem. 

  Also, this place is not glamping. The area is rural, so cows do moo at 6am, and kids are up even earlier. If you like to sleep in skip and rent a B&B. 

  Also if you want a better place to swim go to Mt.Tom state park about 10 minutes up the road. It’s a day use only park-no camping- but the lake is gorgeous and there are very few people there.

  Wolf's Den Family Campground

  Perfect location central in Connecticut

  This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

  Lone Oak Camp Sites

  Not for anyone wanting to rough it but tons of hikes and waterfalls around!

  I have gone to lone oak campsites for 32 years. We have gone as a family since I was a fetus. Tons of kids activities to keep the little ones busy and great hikes around! Tons of waterfalls in the area and the highest point in Connecticut. Stars can be seen well and tons of kind and friendly campers.

  Mystic KOA

  Location location location

  We stayed at Mystic KOA for four nights over the summer. The campground staff did a great job managing the Covid regulations… We were able to use the pool, facilities and the store and never felt that we were compromised. During our stay we enjoyed our campsite as it was close to the pool. The grounds were beautiful to walk on with water nearby and little places to explore. The beverage truck was also one of our favorite things!! The location of the campground was great as it was easy to find, close to a grocery store, and more importantly close enough to our favorite town in Connecticut allowing us the opportunity to visit the ocean, go out to dinner and enjoy the local stores. We go to Mystic Connecticut every year and always stay in a hotel. From here on out we will do our annual trip with our camper at Mystic KOA! It provided us the opportunity to have our own space all while still enjoying our favorite activities in the area. We look forward very much to next year‘s new annual trip :-)

  Mystic KOA

  Great campground for coastal CT & RI

  We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay! 

  This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots. 

  It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park. 

  Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA! 

  We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

  Niantic KOA

  A fun place to be

  You just can’t go wrong  with a KOA campground. His place in Niantic Connecticut very close to downtown and the beach which they have a shuttle for. The staff is very friendly, courteous and knowledgeable of the area. Plenty activities for adults and kids and they are putting in a new swimming pool which will be up middle of July . They have spaces for 10 sites and up (I would call to see if you can fit if you have a larger rig ) very easy to get to write off I-95 even though you’re close to I-95, I could barely hear the traffic. I heard, crickets and birds before traffic.

  Rocky Neck State Park Campground

  Large campground close to beach

  On our way to through Connecticut, we needed to stop for a night. This was on Long Island Sound and had walk-up sites available. $33 per night gets you a site with bath house/restroom close by but no hook-ups. There is a public "beach" nearby which is way different than our Florida ones. We had to walk under the railroad tracks through a tunnel to get there. Interesting but still a nice feature and probably the main attraction here. There was also a concession stand, nature center, picnic area and boat ramp here at this park. Since we were getting a walk-up site they let us drive around and pick our site from a list of available ones. Most of them were on the small side accommodating tents or pop-ups. We found one in the Osprey loop which was very shaded. The bath rooms were clean and up to date. Good for a night on our way to Rhode Island.

  Lone Oak Camp Sites

  Wonderful place for family time

  I happened upon Lone Oaks Camp Site when looking for someplace to stay in north eastern Connecticut. Leery of just reserving at a larger campground, we were pleasantly surprised especially since there was a 50% special so we got 2 nights for the price of one. We arrived with 2 children under the age of 5 and pulled in. The facility was very clean and neat. Upon getting our site (#14) we were shocked at the size of it. We could have fit 3 campers in it and were a good distance from the neighboring sites (there are some places that you are packed in like sardines, not this one). There were 2 good size pools, one for older individuals and one for children. There was also a whirlpool. Although there was no lifeguard, there was a pool attendant that kept the area clean and neat. The playground was clean and had many different pieces of play equipment. The camp store was fully equipped and had a variety of foods including soft serve ice cream. My 5 year old grandson loves to fish and was thrilled when he pulled in a 5 inch fish from their fishing pond. There were many organized activities for both young and old and the staff were very friendly. They have rentals at a reasonable cost along with cart rentals. There were hiking trails and it was close to Action Wildlife in Goshen. For Adults it had adult beverages sold in their lounge on the weekends and felt much more secure to see they had overnight security.. I was really impressed. Many times this late in the season campgrounds are a bit ragged. Not this one. My hats off to the owners and staff for keeping it clean, neat and welcoming.

  Lake Waramaug State Park Campground

  Good for people with toddlers. Very boring with older children.

  1. Plan on bringing your own food and cooking. It is a 10 mile drive that takes about a half an hour to complete to get any take-out.

  2. The Snack Shack is only open on weekends and its future is in doubt as this year's owners said they don't plan to renew contract. Cash only at present.

  3. If you have your own paddleboard or canoe or kayak, this would be a good place to use them. If you don't there are very expensive rentals available on site.

  4. Ice is $2 a bag and firewood $5 a bundle. Cash only. Good quality.

  5. The camp office is only staffed until 5 pm!

  6. There is a really great (but very short .65 miles) hiking trail behind the campground and a cool big rock to climb on near the bathrooms further away from the office and a field that would be good for flying kites, model airplanes or drones behind the state park parking lot.

  7. It is possible to get a phone signal up at the "lookout" of the hike.

  8. Monday apparently is trash day in the area for all the homes around the lake. They start collecting very early and the sound really carries over the lake.

  9. Bring scooters or bikes for little kids to use within the camp.

  10. There is a lot of good hiking that can be done within a 20 min-1/2 hour 8-12 mile drive. A good one would be the Steep Rock Association's Macricostas Preserve, where you can hike up and see the sun set over the lake.

  11. The swimming area is an absolute joke, unless you are 18 months old, and then its probably perfect. (Extremely small, extremely shallow, and some sand to dig in.)

  12. You will not feel like you are getting out in nature. The lake area is very built up and all private, except for the nice promenade area of the state park campground, which is not at all rustic, but good for drinking coffee or reading by the lake.

  13. Every campsite has deep drainage ditches,  likely roots, and stumps as well, but not too much pine in the immediate vicinity to make a mess of your gear.

  14. The roads around the campground are very narrow with a lot of blind curves. Be careful and aware when driving, and I think cyclists are taking a gamble.

  15. Fair number of motorcyclists on a sunny Sunday afternoon, but they seemed fairly quiet and aware, so weren't bothersome.

  16. A car alarm at a nearby house went off, and didn't turn off until the battery died.

  It was not at all what we expected, but we tried to make the best of it. We were disappointed. I don't even know why anyone would go to the regular state park at all. CT has much nicer ones with more to do.

  Lots of activities for kids. Most seasonal sites are held by employees. Super friendly staff clean sites and bathrooms. Great little store. Activities for the kids. Not a ton of privacy, but we didn’t mind much. Nice change from the dry camping we usually gravitate towards

  White Pines Campsites

  Could have been so much better

  Upon arrival, I liked the atmosphere and friendly service but our site was filthy. A bag of dog poop by a tree, trash under the picnic table, cigarette butts littering the rocks around the fire pit, and the pit was so full of ash, there was no more room for firewood. And as other reviewers stated, these sites aren’t the cheapest. I don’t normally complain but this was unacceptable in my opinion. I called the front desk and spoke with a very lovely person. She was mortified and said she’d send maintenance. No. One. Ever. Showed. Up. We waited an hour and then we just started cleaning it up ourselves so we could move on and get started on dinner.

  Our site was T3 and it was spacious and spread out from other tent sites. There was a tiny creek meandering behind the site and the woods just went on for miles. We felt grateful to be separated from the RVers and have so much space to ourselves.

  Night fell and the place turned into Margaritaville. The seasonal RVers have really taken over the place and while some have tasteful decor and lights, others not so much. Even 50 yards away from the RV section and I felt like I was in a dance club parking lot. The music was so loud. No one seemed to care. Nothing was enforced.

  Lastly, there was a lonely port-a-potty across the road from us along with a water spigot. There was trash all around the spigot that remained there throughout our stay (an entire roll of sopping wet toilet paper and an eyelash curler, guys), but the camp sanitation truck came once a day to empty that outhouse, which I never used based on the smell. If you have young kids that nap during the day, this truck would wake them. I walked the extra .2 miles to the bathhouse, which started out immaculate but quickly turned south with the sheer number of people using it. A cleaning log claimed it was tended to but it couldn’t have been true. Trash was endlessly overflowing and soap was running low.

  The loud music I could get over for the view but the uncleanliness was just annoying. What a simple thing to fix for your customers.

  Also beware of bears. We and several other neighboring campers spied a pretty big black bear not far enough away in the late morning hours. I’m sure they are fed well.

  Odetah Camping Resort

  Lots to do but not very private

  Resort is the right word! We went in cooler September during Covid, so we couldn’t take advantage of all the amenities, but we’ve already decided we need to book a trip for peak season next summer. We had two sites side by side for our group of 7 and two dogs. The staff will deliver wood right to your site. The only con is the sites are not very private...at all.

  Nice campground, friendly people and staff. Really nice that you can walk to the trails/beach and Rocky Neck. Bathrooms could be nicer, but not bad. Would stay again.

  Mystic KOA

  Great campground!

  We packed up the RV, our two dogs and drove to Mystic, CT. It was our first trip to the area. We chose Mystic KOA and stayed in a full hook up-50amp pull through site. On arrival, the campground was clean and spacious. Office staff very helpful with check in, and we were easily able to find our site. There were many things to do within the campground, some closed due to Covid, but that didn’t matter. We had a great time walking the dogs, and we used the dog run several times.

  The campground is close to Mystic Seaport, which was beautiful. We ate Mystic Pizza II at our campsite (right down the road), and visited the adorable town of Groton to eat at Fred’s Lobster.

  We will definitely return! Great experience!

  Charlie Brown Campground

  The nicest people..

  We chose the best spot for our first camping trip with our new travel trailer. Everyone assisted us and taught us the world of camping. Activities were still available with social distancing of course due to Covid. Close by was Taylor Brooke Winery which was the perfect place to while away a late summer afternoon. If you go to Charlie Brown’s request a site by the water. Rain had been sparse so didn’t matter our weekend but I would imagine it would be great on a hot sunny day

  Nice campground—crazy owner

  Loved the campsite. Beautiful, quiet, serene. The downside is that the owner is straight crazy. One minute she’s friendly, the next minute she’s blaming us for things we never did. We had booked a month and we were supposed to be staying right next to family. Due to a problem with the site she moved us clear across the park and told us we could return when it was fixed. But then didn’t let us return to that site afterwards and ripped into my dad when he tried to ask. Very rude lady.

  Ross Hill RV Park & Campground

  If you want water views this is the place.

  I have been camping here for 20 years off and on. The staff is always friendly and will accommodate you with whatever you need. Don't like your site? Call the office and they will find you one you do like if it's available. The campground is set on the Q River and if you're lucky enough to see it from your site it's beautiful. The campground CAN get packed but everyone is polite and we've never had a problem. 

  I will be returning every year I'm able.

  Clean bathrooms and nice store.

  It is part of the Lake Compounce Amusement Park.

  Stayed in September 2021. CG is pretty empty during the week and gets busy during the weekend.

  Horrible management! Owner is disrespectful and rude, will not be back!

  Worst place to camp!!! My husband has been going to this camp ground for 30 something years since he was a little boy and when the father ran it, it was awesome!! Had a PA system, had activities.. now that the son Greg runs it.. it’s gone down hill and continues to go!! The bathrooms are disgusting, he picks and chooses who he wants to yell at and kick out.. he has this little boy with long hair on a power trip who’s“employee of the month” driving around a dirty, loud duck taped John Deere tractor taking pictures of people. My husband called the park twice to ask about a inflatable water slide and if was ok for us to bring it, the girl who answered the phone said“let me call you back I’ll check with the owner” called us back and say yes.. then my husband called back again to switch sites due to the girl saying yes.. told them AGAIN about the water slide, she said yes that’s fine.. she even moved us to the field, asked us if they were paying us to bring it.. we said no and she said oh wow ok.. maybe I should go camping this weekend and started to laugh and moved us to a site with no one next to us and even made a comment, ya know I don’t think I like this lady.. I’ll just move them to site 48 and you to 47..long story short, we put up the slide when we got there, the little boy on his little power trip was hiding behind the bathrooms taking pictures of the slide with our children and nieces and nephews on it and my husband asked if there was an issue and he looked at my husband said“im shutting you down!!” And he said you are? And he replied saying that Greg told him to shut us down… my husband asked for Greg to come down and talk to him, himself and when Greg got there.. he was extremely rude, got extremely loud like he was trying to“embarrass someone” however my husband and I knew that we spoke with a young lady several times prior to us coming and she verified it was ok for us to bring it..so no one embarrassed us.. he embarrassed himself. Greg continued to argue with us saying“no no your wrong, shut it down, I don’t care” when all he had to say was listen, I’m sorry for the miscommunication on both ends.. I’ll take care of the site for you, please just take it down. But no.. he had to try to look like a big guy, start yelling and threatening to kick us out. My Husband even said to Greg, how long have my family and I been coming here? And he said “I don’t know, I don’t count” but when my father in law went into office, Greg tune completely changed bc he knew exactly how long they’ve been going there!! Regardless if this is a camp ground or another type of company.. we’re still customers who pay for a site.. they offer a service so they should have better customer service! I’m appalled by this interaction.. disappointed a grown man could try to argue with someone in-front children and believe that’s ok.. this guy shouldn’t be an owner of anything and it’s sad that this place is going down hill because he wants to sit in his little office and complain he can’t find good help but yet he doesn’t get off his butt and spend a little money to make this place better.. and I’m shocked he isn’t putting a pool in where the pond is.. my nephew got bite by something in that thing.. it’s absolutely disgusting!! My family and I will NEVER be back here and I will be telling everyone I know about this experience because he doesn’t deserve anymore money!! His father did a great job but Greg is a horrible business owner!!! Good luck!

  Great family campground close to beach

  Update number 2: I told you I come here a lot, we did bingo and it was a blast. It was a beautiful day on the beach pond. They had great prizes for cheap cost. I spent 2 dollars for 10 long rounds of bingo with 4 cards. Who can beat that!!?? My son won a game prize worth 5 times that. I had to give the rest of the money I had as a tip because I was so happy with how everything worked out. They are always updating, someone broke the basketball 🏀 hoop on one side and it’s fixed 2 weeks later.

  Update: They have changed days for me many times when I had issues with the camper. Never once asked questions or even treated me differently. No extra cost. You might have have to change spots but I don’t care. They are so easy to work with. Thanks guys

  Great Value and Nice Family owned business. The lake is perfect, the river needs work. But this an awesome small campground. The kids who work here are so friendly and the playground is nice. They did a show on the beach one night that was fun too. We did bingo too. Have been going for 2 years and started with tenting up to a trailer. I love coming here and wish I could spend more time. Really close to Hammonassett beach and one of my favorite restaurants the “log cabin”. Make sure you bring Tupperware with you to this place.

  Also don’t let other family’s ruin your trip. We had 3 family’s meet up on 2 sites near us and the father and mother just kept yelling at the kids. Made me feel bad for the children but doesn’t make me right a bad review about the campground.

  Unfriendly Bad management

  Failed us twice. We had stayed a few times and were never treated well. We move to about 7 campgrounds per season. This is the only one we had a major problem. One staff member was not trained well and yelled at us and approached us aggressively as we expressed our concerns with being made promises that were not kept and we were made to feel like we were unreasonable even though others had confirmed our reservations. Don’t camp here! It’s a risk.
