Campgrounds near Westhampton Beach sit on Long Island's glacial moraine, creating a unique landscape where pine barrens transition to coastal areas. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F with high humidity while overnight lows range between a comfortable 60-70°F. Fall camping sees milder temperatures with less humidity but more variable conditions, particularly near the water.
What to do
Beach activities at Cupsogue County Park: Located at the western end of Dune Road, this park offers direct ocean and bay access. Access requires a 4x4 vehicle with an outer beach permit. "It's all dry camping, however the views are incredible. You are steps from both the ocean and bay," notes Rich L. about Cupsogue County Park.
Kayaking and boating: Sears Bellows County Park provides water access with rental options. "The first night I stayed here my friends and I rented some rowboats and went on the water. It was a lot of fun, and the price of the rowboat was pretty cheap," shares Nadia V. about Sears Bellows County Park.
Hiking trails: Explore wooded trails with varying difficulty levels. "The trails were beautiful, and the flowers were in bloom. There were people who were also biking on these trails, which looked like so much fun!" reports a camper at Sears Bellows County Park.
What campers like
Direct oceanfront views: Smith Point County Park offers sites with spectacular water views. "Our 36ft motorhome backed up to a raised balcony overlooking the bay. Less than 100 feet from the front of our site was the beach and the Atlantic Ocean view," writes Patrick C. about Smith's Point.
Wildlife encounters: Many campgrounds feature native deer populations. "A stones throw away was one of several shower and rest room buildings. Clean and well lit... And sweet deer. I watched a momma deer nursing two of her babies," continues Patrick about his experience at Smith's Point.
Spacious sites with amenities: Indian Island County Park offers well-equipped sites. "Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids," reports Janelle G. about her stay at Indian Island County Park.
What you should know
Suffolk County Green Key requirement: Most county parks require a resident card or higher non-resident fees. "I stayed here for a couple of days. I had to get a Suffolk county green key card. And then pay 50 dollars per night. It wasn't cheap but it's definitely cheaper than the hotels in the area," explains Fernando C. about Suffolk County Sears Bellows County Park.
Fire ring policies vary: Some campgrounds don't provide fire rings. "Lame not having a fire ring, you have to rent one or bring your own," notes Ossama B. about Wildwood State Park.
Tick awareness essential: Wooded areas have significant tick populations. "This is a nice campground - not crowded and centrally located. However, I cannot walk ANYWHERE without picking up ticks. Even on the large sand paths, going to and from the bathroom I find ticks," warns Denis S. about Suffolk County Sears Bellows County Park.
Seasonal crowds: Summer weekends fill quickly, especially at oceanfront sites. "I've been going to this campground every summer for at least 5 years. Recently they became very stringent about parking to vehicles at the site making it very difficult to visit with a family and 2 vehicles," reports Giselle P. about Wildwood State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Playground facilities: Look for campgrounds with dedicated play areas. "Perfect place to take the little ones has a beautiful lake and a really nice playground highly recommended," suggests Correl H. about Southaven County Park.
Secure belongings: At some campgrounds, lock up valuables, especially bikes. "I love smiths point it is so much fun and very save but please lock up your bikes cause high schoolers will go over the bridge and steal your bikes or alcohol if they aren't locked up at night," advises Ella C.
Water activities for children: Many parks offer safe swimming areas. "So my wife and I live 30 minutes from Smiths Point and been visiting the beach since childhood... It also happened to be Trick or Treat weekend on the campground which really fun to see," shares Chris A. about his family experience.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Check site specifications before booking. "RV pull through sites were fantastic. It was a great campground for maiden voyage in new rig. Plenty of amenities," reports Lori R. about Wildwood State Park Campground.
4x4 requirements for beach camping: Some oceanfront sites require specialized vehicles. "4x4 a must, air down a must. Beautiful on the bay or ocean side. They also have a hill top section. Beautiful views. Dry camping in an Rv no tents," advises Lisa M. about Shinnecock East County Park.
Dump station logistics: Plan for servicing needs during longer stays. "Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there," mentions Janelle G. about pet friendly camping at Indian Island County Park.
