"We needed a campground not too far off our route from Niagara Falls to NH and this was great... Right on water…can't drive on path in front of the water sites so you are essentially on the water," explains Heather E.
Hiking at Bucks Brook: The primitive camping at Bucks Brook State Forest offers challenging hiking trails along a scenic gorge. "Bucks Brook carves a beautiful gorge through Bucks Brook State Forest before it cascades into the Otselic River. There are both state forest roads and off road trails to hike on in the area," shares Janet R., who notes that "the winding trail can be quite a challenge if hiking the long way uphill."
What campers like
Waterfront campsites: Many campers appreciate the lakefront sites at Delta Lake State Park. "We had a waterfront hookup! So pretty especially in the morning with the sunrise," writes Tris W. "There's a few steps down to a gravel beach and an expansive view of the delta lake."
Clean facilities: Green Lakes State Park Campground receives consistent praise for its well-maintained amenities. "The bathrooms have been remodeled and most are private with a toilet, shower and sink which makes this a wonderful family campground," notes Sheri S., adding that "the hiking includes an easy 3.1 mile loop with much shade around two glacier formed turquoise lakes."
Spacious sites: The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone offers campers generous space between sites. "The sites were level and great size with nice spacing in between," mentions Jen O., a full-time traveling family who notes that "the campground was beautiful and easy to get in and out of."
What you should know
Primitive camping options: Charles E. Baker State Forest provides free dispersed camping opportunities. "Camped here on a Thursday night in late September. Only found one designated campsite, which was available, but there's a lot of good space for dispersed camping right nearby," reports Cameron, who advises that while there are "no toilets" and "some litter, not too bad," the site offers "water access at a lovely nearby pond."
Seasonal factors: Most campgrounds operate from May to October. "Fills up during August when the State Fair is in Syracuse (same is true for every campsite in this area)," warns Harry H. about Green Lakes State Park.
Campground layouts: Site selection matters at dog friendly campgrounds near Morrisville. "Unless you score a campsite in the row up against the water, forget privacy. The campsites are spacious but you're pretty much camping on the same lawn as your neighbors with very few trees in between you," explains Ali T. about Verona Beach State Park.

Beach access: Lebanon Reservoir Campground features water activities suitable for children. Michael O. notes the campground has "a nice little store for the basic supplies and treats, as well as fire wood and boat rentals," adding that "the staff is great."
Playground facilities: Delta Lake State Park includes recently improved play areas. "They have recently added electricity to the sites and a new playground at the beach. The concession stand at the beach will deliver to your camp site," shares Amy W.
Designated pet areas: Pet-friendly campgrounds near Morrisville typically maintain specific areas for dogs. Stoney Pond State Forest Camping Area offers "15 drive-in campsites widely spaced and set into the woods," according to Janet R., who notes that "there are several new clean outhouses with doors meant to be wide enough for wheelchairs."
Tips from RVers
Full hookup availability: The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone caters specifically to RV campers with complete amenities. "This is a nice campground. I mean really nice. Very well thought out. All sites are full hookups (i think) and paved. Definitely geared towards the RV or trailer crowd," says Michael O., who appreciates that "bathrooms are very modern and well stocked."
Site leveling considerations: Check site grading before setting up. "Sites are mostly level, but some did slant quite a bit. Hookups are well located and modern," notes Michael O. about Lebanon Reservoir Campground.
Seasonal site availability: Many campgrounds have sites occupied by seasonal campers. Rob L. points out that Lake Chalet Motel and Campground has "most sites rented already as seasonal so getting a site can be tough."
