Not a KOA I expected

Staff was nice. Sites are not level. Cable only offered a premium sites. Game room was half open. Bathrooms and showers were clean but no air... it wasn't working. Small pool. Just disappointed not a KOA expected.

Well run, clean, and great views

We stayed for an overnight on the way to Arizona. Check in was very easy and well organized. There is a store and they will also bring breakfast to your site which is a great added feature. If you get a site at the very back of the park, like we did, you have an unobstructed view, of Tucumcari Mountain which was very nice to watch the sunset. Clean bathrooms, quiet aside from the interstate noise. Con - was a little pricey for the area and I’ve seen people complain it’s a little harder to get to then some of the other parks, but it was really a simple turnaround. It is on the east side of town so you reached the park before you reach anything in town but you can get DoorDash there if you want dinner delivered. Would stay again.

Good stopping point

A nice campground right off the highway.  We stayed on a new site toward the back of the campground.  Less highway noice.  Nice view of the mountain near Tucumcari and great grill.  They look to be working hard to improving this campground.  Saw people working diligently well into the late afternoon/evening on improvement projects.

Heater did not work. Did get credit on stay. The bathrooms were warmer than the cabins. Bathrooms were clean. Water was hot!

Nice but Some Maintenance Issues

The sites are nice for this kind of place. A little bit pricey but I wanted electricity to run my AC in my Tiger Moth. The staff is very friendly and gave me a cookie at check in. The bathroom is OK but two of the three men’s toilets were out of order. One sink was not working either. Good place to stop for an overnight.

KOA but great, okay!

Really nice KOA. Good views, quiet, some of the cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen. The grass is well tended and makes for good tent spots.

New Mexico Roots

We stayed here during our journey to the northwest. Not much to stop the relentless wind that whips through the park. We were just glad to have a level site with full hook-ups and showers.

Good for 1 night

We rolled in late at night, exhausted from a day on the road. We had a pull thru site. The gravel pads had potholes and our slide was so close to touching our neighbors slide. Pool is closed. Wouldn’t stay here for more than 1 night.

Clean sites and restrooms. Laundry facilities. Propane. AND they have a grill and will deliver dinner and breakfast! All pull through sites. A few trees. Nice view of Caprock mountain! This KOA has everything!

Good overnight stop

Spent one night here in mid may. Pretty nice, good clean bathouse. Sites are close but seems everyone was just staying one night. Everything worked including cable. Has semi covered picnic tables that looked good. They were actually pouring concrete pads in a new addition but existing pads are gravel. Helpful staff, easy check in.

Great for a 1 night stay

We pulled in last night and the check in was fast and easy. This is a journey KOA, so it’s not much in the way of amenities. That being said, this is one of the better “Journey KOA’s” we’ve stayed at. It’s got a descent little park for the kids, bathrooms, showers, a laundry mat and a dog park for your dogs. The store is closed for covid but they have a dinner and breakfast menu that you can call in and they’ll deliver to your site.

Decent place, smelled like hog/cattle farm

Small dog run. Playground could use an update. Good water pressure. Level sites. Spread out decently. Gravel/dirt roads through site. Plenty of picnic tables. Constant strong hog/cattle farm smell untold winds turned.

We pulled in after dark. Staff had all of our reservation paperwork and provided a site map with the route to our spot. There was a forecasted freeze tonight so everyone had to run off tanks, but they allowed us to fill our fresh tank, so all was well.

Muddy Mess

Staff is friendly but not helpful. Clean and warm restrooms despite the cold. We paid the extra to be on concrete. Pull thru pad was not level. Hookups were in several inches of mud and made the biggest mess. The view was beautiful and Tucumcari was a neat place to see but I would not recommend this KOA. I paid too much for such a disappointment.

Nice place.

Can't give a ton of info here. We rolled in after hours, and like the guy on the phone said, my information was hung on the front door ready for me when I got there. Was able to get to my spot easily. Left before sun up, so can't say too much more.

Windblown Reststop

Granted it was no one's fault that many of the trees had their leaves blown off, but it made for a very warm, non-shaded spot for the night!  Restrooms very clean and stocked.  Small store was nice and you could also order take-out from their small onsite restaurant.

Chirping birds

Stayed one night during travel. The rv sites were level and big enough that we didn’t need to unhook. We got in around 4:30 am and the birds were so loud chirping I had to use ear plugs. Good thing is they drowned out the sound of the traffic on highway. Easy place to stay .

Roadside Stop With Route 66 Charm Nearby

Traveling the old familiar Route 66 time and time again I have found so many stops to enjoy. I try to make it a point to check out new places each time I pass to get a full perspective of what this strip of highway has to offer. Not always will you be able to stay in a classic roadside stop, but when you can get within throwing distance of one you have to jump on the opportunity.

The grass here is semi green the spaces are large enough to not be on top of your neighbor and the staff is friendly. I like that they have a grassy tent area with the signature KOA feel in the picnic structures and while you are in a semi desolate looking space, you feel that the area has a sense of community with a lot of retro trailers and rvs passing though on the same mission as you.

This seems to be an older KOA so some of the amenities, while nice are not as up to date as other campgrounds. I noticed this mostly in the playground, and while I am perfectly happy with the see-saws and older swing sets which remind me of my own childhood, I am sure to newer parents used to all things plastic and padded this is a nightmare waiting to happen.

The pool is not large but perfectly sized for a small group and is gated to protect it from being used by just anyone at the camp during any non-specific type of hour. It is, like at many KOA camps, seasonal so if you are wanting to take a dip, might call in advance to make sure you aren't there when it isn't open. The one thing that was a little strange to me was the height of the fence, a little tall and made me think they ave had issues with fence jumping previously, then again maybe it is just an extra precaution for insurance.

Nights here are pretty quiet and if you can get past the appearance of chainlink surrounding the property you have an amazing New Mexico sunset only a short distance from the old Neons of Route 66.

The sites themselves for tents come in 3 basic types, standard grassy sites with no improvements, pull thru sites with water and electric and group sites known as the tent village. The prices vary depending on type of site and location and for tent village I will recommend booking well in advance online because I tried on three different sets of dates and it always said NOT AVAILABLE. Average cost of camp however is between $28 and $35 before tax.

TIPS:

  • Opt for a site further from the road because traffic can be a bit loud along the road side of this campground.
  • Checkout is at 11 a.m. make sure you are aware of this because otherwise you are subject to an additional days charge at any KOA camp.
