Historic Cabins Make it Worthwhile

We wanted to see the Elkmont Historic Cabins and were not disappointed!  Most the the cabins are open so you an walk through them!

However, the campground left lots to be desired!  We were in the 'G' area and the facilities were disgusting, there was no privacy between sites and there was a dog being allowed to bark nonstop.  No wifi at all.  Gatlinburg was a nightmare of tourista crap and crowds of people without masks.  Few places to eat outside of that downtown area where we did not want to venture. Wanted to go see Pigeon Forge, but were put off by what was happening in Gatlinburg.

Mixed bag of Campsites

We ususally try to find the Army Corp of Engineers campgrounds as they're so nice!  This particular one has two areas - the main one and a few separated campsites over a bridge.  We were over the bridge and I would not recommend it - dogs could not cross bridge and sites are very small.

Facilities clean and well lit.

Out of the Way Serene Forest

Meeman-Shelby, north of Memphis, is a nice addition for your camping travels.  Very quiet with decent, if old, shower and toilet facilities. Lots of mosquitoes due to the forest surrounds so be prepared.  Some sites have dual levels so be prepared there, too.  Not much privacy between sites.

Lovely State Park with Lots to Do

We only spent one night at the Cottonwood Campground here and would go back in a heartbeat.  Sure, the facilities were old and buggy and I didn't even want to shower there, but the park has enough to keep me interested in coming back!

Nice 'heart healthy' trail off of Cottonwood that was about a mile long.  The park is huge and really needed to be explored more. Some great birding!

A Gem in a Stark part of Texas

Hidden south of Amarillo is this lovely canyon that few know about!  It is second in size only to the Grand Canyon and is very unlike the plains above it. Nice campsites, shower/toilet facilities a bit old and buggy as Hackberry is an older part of the park.  Wolfberry and Juniper campgrounds in the park have newer, beautiful facilities. Sites are a nice size and there are a lot of trees between them.  Lots to see and do if you're into nature and hiking and bird watching.  Also saw wild turkey and a yellow snake. Rock formations and cliffs are awesome.  June was very hot.

Windblown Reststop

Granted it was no one's fault that many of the trees had their leaves blown off, but it made for a very warm, non-shaded spot for the night!  Restrooms very clean and stocked.  Small store was nice and you could also order take-out from their small onsite restaurant.

Wonderful Gem in Farm Country

This hidden gem of a campground is very quiet and serene - surrounded by tall trees and next to a tall grass prairie conservation area - complete with historic schoolhouse, mowed trails to a nearby creek, gentle rolling hills, trees, birds & wildlife and a small bridge. Best place to stop in central Illinois - 13 miles from Decatur

Small but lovely

This is a very pretty little campground with really basic amenities - vault toilets and a some common area spigots.  Large trees, grassy sites, nice trails.  Our non-electric spot was a bit challenging to find a level spot on the grass but it was large enough to work it out.  Had table and fire ring and a place to dump gray water.  Close to Yellow Springs which is a real plus.

Lovely setting near historic site

We camped overnight here in order to visit the Elkmont Historic area. Very interesting story of cabins that were bought out in order to create Great Smokey Mountains National Park. We were in a campervan and were in section G - heavily wooded but pretty quiet. Restrooms were absolutely gross - and I checked 3 of them. Flush toilets, no showers, no way to dry hands. Yuck. Most people brought their own facilities….. Gatlenberg is nearby but is a super-crowded, over-the-top tourist area with tons of souvenir stores, ziplines, etc. - not our thing at all (and no one wearing masks)

Clean KOA with plenty of Options

Nice place to camp for a few days - we had a campervan and were surrounded by huge, but quiet, RVs. Restrooms (6), showers (3) and laundry room were kept immaculately clean which is always appreciated! Pool also very clean and well maintained. Only downside was noisy highway next to the campground…..we were surprised that nothing was done to mitigate noise (no barrier fence or wall, no shrubbery hedge, etc). But this is a problem with KOAs everywhere.
Very nice clerk and staff. Suggestion: add a full length mirror in restrooms.

Stunning Simplicity

A bit rough for our campervan, but worth the ride! Hidden back in white limestone hills, this little gem is not very busy. Campsites have shaded tables and are set a bit farther apart. Vault toilets that were very clean. No water. Great hikes into the hills.

Wonderful Getaway Close to Tucson

Very hard to get a reservation as this lake is very popular. Lake is smaller than you think, and most of it is a no-wake zone. They do rent boats st the small marina/store. Many sites are shaded and have a picnic table; some sites are built-in. Nice trails around. It is also on a major flyway so birding is good.
