Best RV Parks & Resorts near Hillsboro, NM

Hillsboro RV Park provides year-round full hookup sites with 30-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections for motorhomes and travel trailers. The small park accommodates big rigs with drive-in access and reservable spaces, though sites are positioned relatively close together. "Folksy and artistic quiet. Research where you need to exit you might miss it then have to go into Silver City to turn around," notes one visitor about the approach. Lakeview RV Park near Caballo features 50-amp service with drive-in access, offering drinking water, picnic tables, and trash disposal. Just 20 miles from Hillsboro, Cedar Cove RV Park accommodates larger motorhomes with 50-amp electrical hookups, though the park lacks showers, trash service, and does not permit campfires.

Advance reservations are necessary during peak seasons, as many RV parks maintain limited transient spaces. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, several parks along nearby Caballo Lake primarily house long-term residents, with only a handful of overnight spots available for travelers. Sanitary dump stations exist at most parks, though Percha Dam State Park requires visitors to drive to Caballo State Park for dumping services. Cell service varies throughout the region, with stronger coverage at Elephant Butte RV Resort and diminishing signal in more remote locations. Most facilities welcome pets but enforce leash regulations. Travelers should note that summer temperatures frequently exceed 95°F, while winter nights may drop below freezing, affecting water systems and comfort levels in less insulated rigs.

Lions Beach Campground — Elephant Butte Lake State Park

    Pretty view, far from water

We stayed on the B loop in spot 86, with a 40 foot motorhome. It was easy to get in and out. We have a water hook up and a thirty amp.Hookup but no sewer. According to their website, the B loop is waterfront, but that just means it has the best water view, we are about three quarters of a mile from the actual lake.

The actual campground is very quiet. There's more fifth wheels in class c.Motorhomes down on the actual beach dispersed camping. It looks like a ton of fun but a little risky driving on the sand. I talked to a guy that had to get towed out of the sand yesterday. People are loading their boats and jet skis right on the beach.

The RV site has a nice concrete pad with a cover over it and a picnic table. There are a few little trees as well.

Great cell service for AT&T and Verizon

    Dream Catcher RV Park

    Excellent in the basics.

This campground is very well maintained. The restrooms and laundry room are obviously well used but very clean. Their is a dog park, dump station, and air compressor, and dumpsters on site. When it reopens the Quality Inn next door allows guest to use the pool and fitness center. Their is also a bar and grill inside. The park has 117 sites with about half being pull through. All of them appear to be full hookup with the rear row given over to long term guest. There is additional space for dry camping if you prefer. If you are arriving late, call ahead so they have your documents waiting outside. If you don't have a reservation, documents are available to self-register, but it is cash only. The lot is full gravel, so bring your camp shoes, and the wind will keep your awning rolled up. The temperature was near 100F on the day that I arrived but by the time the sun started to go down the breeze made for a nice evening. The only negative thing I have to say is that the light pollution makes it very hard to see any stars.

    Wagon Wheel RV Park

    No thanks

Shabby, looks like for long term residents. Tight spaces. Run down appearance. Off of main road so there is loud car as well as train noise. 55+ age restrictions. Checked it out but would not stay here. No tent sites available.  Has wifi, cable, and laundry. 30 & 50 amp as well as pull through sites.

There are other RV parks in this area that are much nicer and more welcoming and at around the same price.

    Percha Dam State Park Campground

    Peaceful and Quiet

Tucked in next to the Rio Grande, Perch Dam Campground is quiet, clean, and enjoyable. The bathrooms were spotless and well maintained, as were the pit toilets in the dispersed area.  Most sites easily can fit a 35 - 40 foot rig.  There is water and electric (15, 30, 50 amp) at all reserved sites.  The only drawback, no RV dump station on site; you'll need to go to Caballo SP to dump.  Had great Verizon cell service while there.  We will return!

    Manzanos RV Park

    Great option in Silver City

Man, free pulled pork BBQ every Sat. evening garnered this place the 5th star!  :)

Stayed 4/23- 4/30. Nice RV park just outside of Silver City with large spaces and junipers between the spaces. We were in #16 which was huge. Full hookups, laundry. Only one bath with a shower. Naturalized pet relief area with some desert vegetation. Dirt road to the place from Kirkland. No playground so saw no kids staying there. Seemed like mature, respectful RVers. Some folks were extended stay, seemed like any long term residents were in a different area; overall nice, neat, quiet, and tidy. John keeps things in good order.

BTW, in Silver City for Tour of the Gila, cool to see the stage races.

Food aside: Heated up some frozen Bertolli pasta dinner and then: nothing on Sat. night because, free BBQ!!  Donations appreciated.

    Sunrise RV Park

    Barren but Nice

This park is off of a 4 lane main road so road noise is an issue. Trains and highway noise can also be heard throughout the night. The facilities are clean and well kept. Full hook ups 30/50 amp sites, no tents. Sites are a bit close to your neighbor. Large flat gravel lot typical of RV parks.

Have yearly rates so some spaces are occupied by residents.

This is a 55+ park. Pet friendly, WiFi/cable and laundry available.

    Iron Creek Campground

One of my favorites in the Gila Forest

About 10 sites, most of them shaded with picnic tables and fire rings. Has garbage collection, and a vault toilet. Usually peaceful and quiet. Nice hiking trails throughout. No cell signal. Most spots are fairly flat with slight adjustment.

Guide to Hillsboro

Hillsboro sits at an elevation of 5,260 feet in southwestern New Mexico, near the eastern foothills of the Black Range mountains. The region experiences 280+ sunny days annually with summer temperatures often reaching 90°F while winter nights can drop below freezing. Fall and spring deliver the most comfortable camping conditions with moderate daytime temperatures and cool evenings.

What to do

Hiking trails access: Elephant Butte Lake State Park offers multiple trail systems with varying difficulty levels. "Wildlife: Qual, Dove, Lizards, Rabbits, Deer and more. The lake front was crowded with campers and people. Water was clear and cool with lots of carp," notes Jonathan M.

Hot springs relaxation: Faywood Hot Springs provides natural mineral soaking options within 30 minutes of Hillsboro. "The hot springs bathing areas are nice. They have clothes optional and required areas," shares Robert H. The springs maintain different temperature pools ranging from 100-106°F.

Ghost town exploration: Historic mining communities surround the area within 15-30 minute drives. "Lake valley ghost town is worth the ride," recommends Mike H. about attractions near Hillsboro. Self-guided tours are available year-round during daylight hours.

What campers like

Spacious sites: The RV parks near Hillsboro provide ample space between sites. At Manzanos RV Park in nearby Silver City, Teresa T. notes: "Next time I'm in the area, I'm staying here. These spots are much nicer and there are trails and things to see very close."

Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain well-kept restrooms and common areas. "Very clean, secluded, serene. Great place and close to sights, yet nestled in a lovely spot," explains Denise G. about Manzanos RV Park, located approximately 35 miles from Hillsboro.

Community events: Some RV sites near Hillsboro, New Mexico organize regular social gatherings. Mark M. shares his experience: "Man, free pulled pork BBQ every Sat. evening garnered this place the 5th star! Nice RV park just outside of Silver City with large spaces and junipers between the spaces."

What you should know

Limited availability: Several RV parks operate with few transient spaces. At Lakeview RV Park, Mary L. points out: "This is a nice place overlooking Caballo Lake there are only four transient spaces. Most of them are long-term people I would happen to be lucky enough to get one."

Weather considerations: Temperatures fluctuate dramatically throughout the year. "We stayed here in late October for just one night. The site was clean and level. The bathrooms and showers were clean as well," shares Greg R. about Silver City RV Park, indicating the mild fall conditions ideal for camping in the region.

Terrain challenges: Many areas have gravel or dirt access roads. One visitor at Silver City RV Park comments: "Very small but right near historic old town. Sites are small, but great, friendly people. Not for big rigs."

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: During summer months, lake access provides cool relief. Christy L. from Elephant Butte Lake State Park recommends: "My favorite part is grabbing a floaty and float down to caballo lake a smaller lake that connects by river."

Compact camping locations: Some RV sites offer family-friendly amenities in tighter spaces. Rosie G. reports about Silver City RV Park: "Very small and tight park. It was basically cheap and cheerful. You can walk to the old town from here. It was $40 for the night which we thought ok."

Seasonal planning: Visit during fall for the best balance of comfortable temperatures and access to water recreation. "October is a great month for this lake. The weather is great however the lake is pretty low. The sunsets were beautiful!" advises Don D. about camping at Elephant Butte.

Tips from RVers

Hookup options: Elephant Butte Lake RV Resort provides complete services for extended stays. Mike H. explains: "Very clean, well kept resort. Almost full. Sites are pretty tight with close neighbors. WiFi is good. Location is convenient to the lake and shopping. Boat rentals are available at the nearby state park."

Arrival planning: Certain RV parks require advance navigation planning. "It is off of a main road and the highway and trains can also be heard. Walmart and other shopping further down the street," Laura M. shares about Dream Catcher RV Park, a potential overnight option when traveling to or from Hillsboro.

Site selection strategy: Request specific sites based on your needs. Mary F. advises: "Our site was a pull through but was too tight with other sites to actually pull our 33 ft trailer and truck through. We had to back out. Park navigation a bit tight for big rigs. We would next time pick our site once we got there."
