Description

Gila Hot Springs Campground is a private business owned by Allen and Carla Campbell. It offers camping and natural hot spring pools beside the Gila River in southwest New Mexico. We are located 40 miles north of Silver City and about 4 miles from the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Our area is surrounded by the Gila Wilderness and the larger Gila National Forest.

PLEASE NOTE! We are NOT an RV campground. We have no hookups. Small self-contained RV ONLY.

The hot springs campground has three pools with natural rock perimeters and gravel bottoms. Each pool has its own personality and temperature so you are sure to find one that pleases you. The normal temperature of the pools is between 101º and 104ºF.

There are twelve camping areas spaced for privacy and are located around shade trees. Small self-contained campers and trailers are welcome (must be less than 20 feet long) but few sites can accommodate them. No hookups are available.

Toilet facilities (composting) and drinking water is available. We do not provide electricity or trash containers, and there are no bathing or shower facilities. The pools are NOT for bathing.

There are water faucets for cold and hot potable water next to the “dragon spout”, in the pool area. The hot spring water coming out of the dragon spout is 140ºF. Do not wash your dishes there, carry the water to your campsite.

Directions

Located about 40 miles north of Silver City, New Mexico and four miles south of the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Traveling eastbound, the best route will be from I-25. From the south, the best route will most likely be from I-10.From Silver City: Take State HWY 15 north from Silver City. Although it is only 39 miles from Silver City, the travel time is approximately two hours because of the twisting and winding roads through mountain terrain. Another option from Silver City is along MN HWY 35 which goes through Mimbres Valley. Even though this route is a bit longer, it will not have the same winding roads as HWY 15, something to consider if you have a trailer or RV.

Alcoholic creepy owners

The campground itself is nice enough, but the owners are downright rude and creepy.  The owner, Allen, often drinks and then peruses the campground to leer at women in the pools and make innapropriate and offensive conversation.   On one occasion, myself and my girlfriends were soaking, and he wouldn't leave us alone, so we just left.  Not a very relaxing way to spend a vacation!

Love the hot springs, great hosts, calm, and not too many people.

Relaxing Hot Springs

We are traveling in a Mercedes Sprinter camper. Great location for a must see visit to the Cave dwellings. Most camping in the valley is free but this is worth the fee for the hot springs and the owners, who are very welcoming. Also the Hot Springs gives you a chance to swap travel and life tips with other travelers. Fee is $10 per person per night and you really need a reservation especially for the weekend. Other campsites in the valley: Upper and Lower Scorpion; Forks etc were mostly empty.

Off the beaten path

Loved being able to soak in a couple nice little pools. Spots were fine. Nothing fancy. The soaking and the night sky is the draw.

Beautiful place!

Stayed here for one night beginning of Feb 2021 after the long hike out to Jordan hot springs. Great camp sites along the Gila River. Use of the 3 hot spring pools anytime! There were only 4 groups including myself so no issues with space. Great hosts! You can tell they love to meet the ppl traveling through.

Hidden gem along Gila River

Twelve level spots, many right along the Gipa River, shaded by large Cottonwood trees. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. I loved it here!

Although there is no phone or wifi, who need it when you have your own hot springs to bask in? The three pools are cute, clean and have a natural look to them. Clothing optional after dark, so if you are there with a young family keep that in mind.

A different experience eveytime

I’ve stayed here many times over the years (last time was in 2007 however) and depending on how much water is, or recently was in the Gila River, some of the hot springs could be washed out as they get closer and closer to the river. I’ve been lucky enough to go every time where this hasn’t been a problem, but after getting to know the area and camp host well enough, you know if could be a possibility. Beautiful area with cliff dwellings nearby you can walk through and around. We love the Gila Hot Springs! I’m not sure many people know of this hidden gem and it’s a bit of a trek to get there, so if your looking for a real secluded camping experience then try this one

I want to keep it secret

I was doubting about posting pictures and a review because for me this is my secret paradise, there's only a few campsites and the owners just let small groups to stay (with some exceptions). There are three wonderful hot pools in the middle of campsites. Very quiet, relaxing and secure.
