      Ocean View Resort Campground

One of the best campgrounds I have ever stayed in

This is one of the largest, if not the largest, campgrounds in Southern New Jersey. While on the pricier side, everything is top-notch. The roads are all paved, and not gravel (I hate trying to sleep and listening to the sound of stones grating together). The sites are more spacious than most campgrounds, so it doesn't seem so crowded. The bathrooms are all modern and spotless. There are numerous bathrooms which means most sites have one nearby. They do charge a quarter for showers to encourage water conservation and donate the money to conservation causes. The pool is large, as is the lake. Both are well-maintained. The camp store is enormous and is really nice and well-stocked with everything one might need from food to pool and beach stuff to camping supplies and equipment. There is a nice cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. The camp store has a lending library of books and DVDs. There are numerous activities that appear to be well-run, The grounds are shaded with many trees for a great wooded campground feel. The campground is so large that it has an internal shuttle with stations scattered about to help people go between the various important sites such as at the pool, the lake and the store. I found other campers, particularly the seasonals, to be more friendly than other campgrounds at the shore. This requires constant tree care including removing dead trees and branches which they do regularly. The staff is friendly and well-trained. I was in a tent, and when a rare October nor'easter came through, I was offered the opportunity to use a cabin free-of-charge. Fortunately my tent and equipment made it through days of rain and high winds just fine . On my first stay in May, I had to run my dog back to Baltimore towards the end of my trip where he was sadly diagnosed with incurable metastatic cancer. When I returned, I was late and unable to check out by 11, but they allowed me to take as much time as needed to clear the site, as nobody was staying there the next day, which was deeply appreciated - I was an emotional wreck. Oh, and I found the complimentary Wi-Fi to be a great service, and sufficiently fast to allow me to stream ultra-high-definition movies at my site - Most campgrounds charge extra for less-than-good service - a lot more. I find that a big bonus. Overall, I LOVE this campground and highly recommend it.

Atsion Family Camp — Wharton State Forest

      Pine Barrens New Jersey

This campground is part of the Wharton State Forest and has several campgrounds in the area. Great wooded sites right on a lake. Pretty good separation between sites with good tree separation between sites. Some road noise not overly affecting site.

      Beautiful campground, loud campers

Beautiful campground but made the mistake of going on a holiday weekend, the campgrounds next to us were screaming and blasting music all day and throughout the night so we ended up leaving early. A beautiful campground when there aren’t noisy capers ruining it.

Atsion Family Camp — Wharton State Forest

      Not my vibe

I personally did not like this campsite. First of all, our site tag was leftover from SEPTEMBER. Did no one look at any of these sites and leave someone else’s registration posted there for almost a year? Wild. Our campsite had trash leftover from previous campers. The whole campground was loud - from other campers to just the sounds from the nearby road. If you are looking for peace it is NOT here. If you’re looking to have loud music time all night with no repercussions as your kids ride around yelling and carrying on past midnight then you’ll have a blast. The pros of this campsite was supposed to be the access to Lake Atsion but we were turned away at the gate at 12:30 as they stated they were at capacity. Checking into our campsite they specifically asked if we would be utilizing the recreation area so we would have a pass for entry, but that’s seemingly not in their logistical headcount. I would not visit here again.

      Wading Pines Camping Resort

      Poor sites

I recently stayed at Site 36, and unfortunately, my experience was very disappointing. The biggest issue was the campsite itself. Site 36 is extremely small, with neighboring campers only about 5 feet away on one side and roughly 12 feet behind the site. There was very little privacy, which made it difficult to relax. Many of the nearby sites appeared to be occupied by long-term or permanent residents. Several had large amounts of personal belongings stored under tarps, giving the area an unkempt appearance. In addition, the neighboring campsite had children's bikes, large toys, and other miscellaneous items overflowing onto the site I had rented, making it feel even more cramped. Another major concern was the constant cigarette and marijuana smoke. It was noticeable throughout much of the day, and because of the smoke, I couldn't comfortably leave my camper windows open. At over $110 per night for a full hookup site, I expected a much better experience. I understand the campground told me there were no other sites available, although I did notice a few empty sites during my stay. Whether those sites were reserved or unavailable for another reason, I can't say, but Site 346 should not be rented at this price given its condition and lack of privacy. Overall, I would not stay here again and cannot recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing camping experience. Its great for daily tubing but as a camper they lock the fence that gets you to the bridge so you have to take a long walk around although non campers can pull right up, it makes no sense to have a pass through that's locked.

      Avalon Campground

Nice campground near lots of great beach towns

We spent a weekend at Avalon Campground to tour the trailers at the Vintage Trailer Rally. We toured about 15 RVs which was a lot of fun. The owners all took time to share details about their renovations and how they use the trailer.

For me, this is a 4-star campground because of lack of wifi and cable tv. We normally bring our own wifi, but are waiting on a replacement unit to arrive this week. That’s why I was hoping they’d have wifi, or at least cable tv as a backup.

      THINGS I LIKED:

      — Nice campground— nothing fancy, but everything worked and it was pretty clean and well-maintained

      — Friendly staff including an escort to the site(which was a good size with working utilities)

      — Lots of nearby beach towns

      — Easy access from Exit 17 off Garden State Parkway

      — They have a concrete pickleball court which we enjoyed

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

      — WiFi cost extra fee and didn’t work well at all

      — Cable TV reception wasn’t good

      WOULD WE COME BACK?

Absolutely, this is a great spot! They’re adding a swimming pool which is under construction now, so that should be a good addition

      Beachcomber Camping Resort

      Beachcomber RV Resort

Website says RV Resort and cabins. Turns out 75%+/- of camping area is made up of Tiny Homes, owned by people, and some for rent, plus cabins.

In fairness, this isn't our type of camping. Many RV's were season with no one there. Thursday was dead, but Friday campers came in for Mother's Day weekend. We went to the bathhouse only to find out it was closed (seasonal). So a nice easy walk to do laundry turned into a lengthy walk or drive. Made no sense. Then on Friday, I was outside reading a book and an employee rolled into our site on a riding mower kicking up dirt all over me and into the trailer, with rocks kicked up into the picnic table. Lucky, no broken windows. Lippert no longer makes the window, so they would have been buying five (5) ones

This is a great place for families with young children. Just not our cup of tea

    Guide to Northfield

Cabins near Northfield, New Jersey provide convenient access to the Pine Barrens region and Atlantic coastline. Within this area, elevations remain relatively flat, ranging from sea level to about 100 feet, creating ideal terrain for family-friendly accommodations. The sandy soil characteristic of the region influences cabin construction, with many properties built on elevated platforms to manage seasonal moisture levels.

    What to do

Lake activities: Swimming areas at Ocean View Resort Campground feature sandy beaches for day use. "They have a huge swimming pond with a beach," notes a visitor, who also mentioned the campground "just completed a new camp store building that has everything you could think of from camping gear to beach chairs and floats."

Fishing: Year-round access in ponds and rivers near cabin properties provides opportunities for freshwater fishing. A visitor at Chestnut Lake RV Campground mentioned, "Lake has plenty of fish," making it suitable for casual anglers with basic equipment.

Mini golf: Complimentary courses at several cabin locations offer evening entertainment. A recent visitor at Ocean City Campground noted, "Mini golf was Free yes free and also new. They also had a nice corn hole area."

River tubing: Scheduled runs at Winding River Campground coordinate with cabin stays. "They have kayaking and tubing available with their own transport 2,3 and 5 hour trips and you come right back down to the campsite," explains a reviewer, adding that visitors can "bring your own and just pay a small transport fee."

    What campers like

Pool amenities: Dedicated splash areas for younger children at multiple cabin locations. "The pool and pirate splash pad are great for kids!" shares a reviewer about Ocean View Resort Campground, which features water play areas designed specifically for toddlers.

Cabin layouts: Spacious interiors with separate sleeping areas accommodate families comfortably. A visitor at Bass River State Forest shared, "The sites are a great size and many are set back enough that you have privacy."

Weekend activities: Scheduled events run throughout the summer season at most cabin properties. "The campground was clean and well maintained. It's very close to civilization but you get the camping experience," reported a recent guest who stayed during the warmer months.

Site spacing: Premium locations offer increased separation between cabins for more privacy. A visitor noted about Whippoorwill Campground, "The sites are spacious, the pool is awesome and the staff is very friendly and efficient. Check in took less than 5 minutes."

    What you should know

Reservation windows: Book 3-6 months ahead for summer cabin rentals at peak locations. At Ocean City Campground & Beach Cabins, a visitor mentioned, "It seems as everything has recently been updated! Pool was very nice with splash pad for the kiddos. Pavilion and camp store was brand new."

Bug preparation: Pack repellent during summer months, especially for evening activities. One camper reported, "The mosquitoes were vicious," emphasizing the need for proper preparation at properties located near standing water.

Noise considerations: Weekend entertainment at some properties can run until 10 pm. A visitor noted, "I heard a band playing Saturday night, although it was hard to hear over the music each seasonal group seemed to be playing."

Supply availability: Store hours typically run from 8 am to 8 pm during peak season. A recent visitor commented, "The campstore/snack stand was impressive," highlighting the convenience of on-site shopping options.

    Tips for camping with families

Age-appropriate activities: Schedule accordingly based on operating hours that vary by season. One family staying at Bass River noted, "We walked and explored, kayaked, and sang by the fire. The camp sites have plenty of room for the kids to run around and set up their own areas."

Swimming options: Pool rules often include adult supervision requirements for children under 12. A parent mentioned, "This place had a lot to do with kids! Lake, pool, ice cream, arcade, mini golf, mining station, activities. Does get very crowded and definitely have to book ahead."

Cabin selection: Request specific areas away from common spaces for earlier quiet times. A family staying at Whippoorwill Campground shared, "Very nice camp sites. Pool looked amazing but it rained the entire weekend. Very friendly staff. Bath houses were extremely clean. Camp Store had a lot of supplies if needed."

Beach proximity: Allow 15-20 minutes for travel to Ocean City beaches from most cabin locations. A visitor noted, "Close driving distances to local beaches and boardwalks. The pool and pirate splash pad are great for kids!"

    Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Bring blocks for cabins with wooden foundations that may settle. A visitor at Mays Landing Resort noted, "Sites are very unleveled so the staff switched us to a pull thru space that was a tad bit more level but still very unleveled."

Site selection: Request cabin numbers in advance based on location preferences. According to a recent visitor, "Our site was one of the bigger sites and was easy to back into. Site 181. Would recommend and we will be returning!"

Electrical capacity: Check amperage before booking if bringing additional appliances. A visitor commented, "The hookups seemed to work just fine. There is a small concrete patio (which I like), fire ring, and picnic table."

Access roads: Arrive during daylight for easier navigation of narrow property entrances. One RVer mentioned, "The exit is very tight to get out of and all lanes are one way so be careful if you have a big rig."
