BLM Knob Hill Primitive Camping

Joshua trees dot the landscape around this dispersed camping area located off Wee Thump Road, about 1.5 miles from the highway. Campers access multiple established sites via a dirt road that accommodates both sedans and larger RVs, though the surface shows ruts that require careful navigation. The Bureau of Land Management maintains this primitive camping area where visitors can stay up to 14 days at no cost.

Sites spread across the desert terrain offer space for any size vehicle, with some featuring existing stone fire rings left by previous campers. Mountain views extend in multiple directions, while Joshua trees provide occasional shade during the day. Cell service reaches most areas, particularly for Verizon users. Road noise from the nearby state route remains minimal, though some light pollution affects nighttime visibility.

The area attracts campers seeking solitude, with Jeremy E. noting "It was extremely quiet! We barely saw another human the entire time we were there." However, the location does see occasional day use from hikers and off-road vehicle tours. Wind can pick up significantly, so securing gear becomes important. The nearest supplies and fuel are available in Searchlight BLM, about 20-25 minutes away by vehicle.

This spot works well for self-sufficient campers comfortable with primitive conditions who want quick access from Las Vegas or Los Angeles without developed amenities.

Guests frequently mentioned the large, clean sites suitable for any vehicle size and peaceful secluded setting. Many appreciated the proximity to Vegas while feeling like being in the middle of nowhere among Joshua trees.

Quiet Desert Splendor

We stayed 2 nights. There are a number of areas that have been set up for camping. The drive in and out was easy with the small camper. It was extremely quiet! We barely saw another human the entire time we were there. Walked trails and geocached. It does get fairly windy though.

Nothing here but lovely spot

Felt like you were in the middle of nowhere but when we woke there were hikers close by and then a jeep safari came through!! All good though and stunning location. You just need to be completely self sufficient... but isn't that the idea?!

Great Primitive Site

Though the turn off is a bit hard to spot when it gets dark, the sites on Wee Thump Rd are very nice. Gorgeous views of mountains and Joshua Trees as far as the eye can see. The spot we were at had a nice little stone fire pit and was very clean save for a couple of shell casings and bottle caps. Very little noise from the nearby state route, though there was more light pollution than we expected. For its proximity to Vegas (1/2 hour) and LA (4.5 hours), it was a hidden gem! Will definitely be back here when it’s a bit warmer!

The dirt road to the site was rutted but far from impassible even in our little sedan. Searchlight is a nice place to grab a bite on your way out, and if Walking Box Ranch is open it’s worth a visit!

Dispersed

Great place for dispersed camping and the main dirt road goes As far as the eye can see you so there’s plenty of places to pull over park camp and enjoy your time when you first pull in there’s decent spots for big rigs but I wouldn’t drive any further back if you don’t feel comfortable with the road so just know what your rig can handle Before you push the limits and searchlight there is a corner store beef jerky and a gas station as well as a McDonald’s In case you need anything that’s the nearest town and it’s about a 2025 minute drive but regardless if you need something it’s there besides that just you and your rig

Great location on Wee Thump Rd

I don't think this area is knob hill but we found a great spot out Wee Thump Rd about 1.5 miles of the highway near where the pin is on the map. Road was decent for our 2 wheel drive 31" motorhome. It was nice to have some shade from the Joshua trees. We took the third dispersed site. All 3 that we saw were quite large. Great for any size vehicle. Verizon service was great. Nice secluded area.
