    Overview

Mojave preserves a diverse mosaic of ecological habitats and a 10,000 year history of human connection with the desert. Offering extensive opportunities to experience desert landscapes, the preserve promotes understanding and appreciation for the increasingly threatened resources of the Mojave Desert. This remote preserve encourages a sense of discovery and a connection to wild places. At 4,400 feet in elevation, Hole-in-the-Wall Campground is surrounded by sculptured volcanic rock walls and makes a great base camp for hikers.

    Recreation

There are over 1.6 million acres to explore. The popular main attractions are accessible by paved and unpaved roads and more remote areas of the park will require a high clearance, 4WD vehicle. Check out the must see highlights: Mojave National Preserve Must See Highlights Explore the preserve off the beaten path! Take your street legal vehicle along the historic Mojave Road or visit the multitude of canyons and mining roads. Be sure to have high clearance and 4WD. Do not enter mines. 4WD Routes Mojave offers many hikes to choose! Hiking Visit Zzyzx and learn about its history. It is also a great birding location due to its pond.

    Facilities

Hole-in-the-Wall has 38 campsites. Each campsite contains 1-2 vehicle parking spots, picnic table, fire ring, and tent area. Water spigots and vault toilets are available around the campground. Camp hosts are typically present in the peak season months. A dump station is available for campers. Free WiFi is available 24/7 at the Hole-in-the-Wall Information Center.

    Natural Features

Three of the four major North American deserts are found at Mojave National Preserve: the Mojave, Great Basin, and Sonoran. Dozens of seeps and springs coupled with varied elevations and soil types create microhabitats that support a diversity of plant and animal life. Cactus gardens, relict plant communities of white fir and chaparral and the densest, largest Joshua tree forest are all found here. Geologically, the region is just as diverse as it is ecologically. Mountain ranges, dry riverbeds, great mesas, towering sand dunes, striking cinders cones, domes and lava flows define Mojave. Ancient rocks that date back to 2.5 billion years old have been discovered in the Clark Mountains. Not Safe - local homeless camping

Pulled in here to see an old burnt out RV being towed away with the assistance of BLM officers. Did a lap around the camping area and it did not feel safe at all. Lots of homeless camping since this is really close to part of Lake Havasu City. Couple of campers looked broke down and stuck there long term. Lots of tent camping with vehicles (homeless).

Talked to one of the BLM officers on the way out and he recommended that I don't camp there. They have lots of issues with this place. He said the places South of town and further North were much safer.

    Peace and loneliness

The site is small and basic; just a fire pit; perfect! Nice views of the nearby mountain and gorgeous sunsets. 4 stars as there is no protection from wind. Temp at night 36F in February.

    Havasu Heights

    Decent spot just outside town!

I stayed two nights and found the area to be perfect. It was not overly crowded, except for the area right off of the main road. If you go a little farther in on the trail you get a little more space. I full time in a class c and flat tow my Jeep and was able to get about half a mile off the main road for my own slice of heaven.

There are lots of flat areas for easy setup, but there are also quite a few areas that would be challenging to level. Depending on your rig you may want to walk the area first.

There was a little bit of highway noise, but nothing major. Town is about 10 minutes south, and interstate 40 is about 10 minutes north.

We are new to RVing and recently purchased a 2018 Jayco Greyhawk 29MV and wanted to take it some where close, so Davis Camp it was! Staff was great, neighbors were great, and the trip was very enjoyable! RV had no issues!

Great fir overnight stay. Full hook up $47 which we thought reasonable. Concrete and gravel we had a flat site. We used the lending library for a couple of videos we had not seen!

    Ivanpah Dry Lake

One of the best landsailing spots in the world

Ivanpah is a world-renowned spot for land sailing.  The BLM has set the playa aside for use only by non-motorized vehicles and the lake is fantastic!  All types of land yachts, kite buggies and other wind-powered craft sail there.

Motorized vehicles must stay off the lake to avoid rutting the surface.

The area is closed and no vehicle movement is permitted when the surface is wet - you'll probably get stuck if you try.

There is a bathroom kiosk with picnic tables about half-way to the prime sailing area, which is about 3 miles from the turnoff at turn by the state lottery in Primm.

The larger dry lake is on the west side and a smaller lake is on the east, behind the casinos.

    A little bit crazy

People pull in cars everywhere and anywhere they can fit and I don’t think they have permission. They just do it.

They raise their rent by $25 and I cannot read if I have a lease. I haven’t even been here a year and they want to raise the rent.

Craggy Wash - Dispersed Camping Area

    No admission / entry

I just followed the GPS / Google Maps coordinates to go to the Craggy Wash dispersed camping area south of Lake Havasu City (was actually in Lake Havasu City when I searched for nearby dispersed camping sites via The Dyrt ...).  Copied the coordinates provided on The Dyrt webpage, turned left off US 95 South where directed (& it was the correct road on the live map), but there is a locked gate there with big sign: "Private Property Keep Out.". So.....since it was only 4:10 pm PST (Dec. 28, 2024), I travelled on to Hi Jolly just above Quartzsite.  I did leave the Google Maps app active as I turned back south on 95 just to see if the voice directions might provide an alternate entrance to Craggy Wash, but ....no.

Choose how you want to camp.

There are two ways to camp at the Riverside.  There is an RV park across Casino drive with full hook ups and the other amenities' associated with an rv park including propane at the Nov 2024 price of $4.35 a gallon.

Across the street in the casino parking lot next to the road is dry camping area. Free for seven days and more if you play the games and get 25 points a week. Numbered spaces that accomodate any size rig.  Upon arrival pick an open site and park.  Go to the group check in desk at the south tower (closet one).  It's just inside the door. They will have security come to your rig and check your vehicle license and insurance are current. Then TAKE THE FORM the officer gives you back to the group check in desk (I know. It's a long walk) to complete your check in.  Oh. And you have to have a casino players card to stay.   Generators from 7 to 10.    Enjoy your stay and good luck

Ugly gravel pit next to hwy

This spot is best for a quick layover and then move on. Just an old gravel pit,th no water, no toilets, no trash. Only a few miles north of the town and Walmart. There were a couple of broke down burned out vehicles that added to the ambiance. No cell in the lower pit but ok cell on upper level.

    Great stop over night

It was a stop over for one night while returning home. The ladies at check in were very nice and welcoming. Long pull trough site allowed us to stay hooked up. The utilities were well placed. Sites offer fairly good privacy with hedges. This park is desert view as is in it's name, so don't expect to walk to the river. My navigation, didn't do a good job of finding it, so look for the signs they have placed on the roads. It is next to the KOA if that helps. I'd come here again.

    Beautiful and wild

We loved it here, stayed the one night to break up the journey. The directions are great, and there are two sites here, we stayed in the second. It was nice and level. The views were beautiful, and having all the space and quiet to ourselves was magical. Didn't see any snakes or other critters.

    Solid Overnight Stop

We stopped here as a one night stop on our way to New Mexico. It was a decently maintained dirt road, you should know how to crawl around potholes and/or have a higher clearance vehicle. I could see a 2WD getting stuck in the sand/fine rock areas. If you want to sleep in at all, definitely pick the west side of a large rock structure to help block the morning sun. It very quickly got hot, but with no canopy on the tent at night, we slept comfortably.

    DW Ranch Road

Great Spot but go further up the road

We stayed here for a night and the site was beautiful. We stayed in one of the spaces not too far down the road as it was our first time dispersed camping. I would definitely recommend staying further down the road as there were a few things we quickly realized:

    • There is a Loves truck stop on the other side of the highway so if gets pretty loud with all of the truck traffic
    • DW Ranch road had a lot of local traffic, including jeeps that I'm assuming were going off roading but they kept blasting by at 2/3AM with those huge light bars on them
    • There is a parking lot right at the end of the road that seemed to be a hot spot for high school kids that wanted to come mess around in the field area at night (We stayed on a Saturday and got woken up by some drunk kids walking pretty close to our area yelling and screaming)
