Swan Lake Trading Post & Campground

Ranger Review of The Dyrt's reservation system @ Swan Lake Trading Post & C

For full disclosure we were compensated for this trip for testing the Dyrt's reservation system.

Our trip to Swan Lake Trading Post & Campground started out by reserving the campground through The Dyrts's new reservation system. Reserving the site was extremely easy and fast to use, way better than other systems we have used before. We had a confirmation from the campground with in a few hours of using the reservation system.

Now for the campground. We were highly impressed by this small campground. The tent camping area was located around a small pond/lake. The site has picnic tables and fire rings as well as plenty of chairs available for siting around the fire or along the little lake. The campground has 8 RV sites, 3 cabins and 3 yurts (the yurts had not been set up for the season during our visit). The trading post has all your basic camping needs and anything you need if you forget something, they even have Ice Cream. If you don't want to cook breakfast the trading post will take care of that for you by cooking up a breakfast sandwich for you. The campground provides clean restrooms and showers. Tent sites were very reasonable at $20, just two more dollars than the Forest Service campground down the road which does not have flush toilets or showers. The camp host are very friendly. We were provided with the camps wifi password, but you do have to be on the trading post back porch to use it. The porch has plenty of table an chairs for sitting at. They also have games you can use to pass the time, we didn't use them but was nice to know they were available. It was nice and quiet at night with very little traffic on the highway, plus the creek running by really muffled any noise from vehicles driving by. This campground will definitely be on our list to stay at the next time we visit the Swan Valley and Swan Lake.

Big Arm State Unit — Flathead Lake State Park

    Lakeside Camping on Flathead

The campground offers many lakeside campsites complete with picnic table and fire rings. There were 3 yurts for those interested. all vehicles, including camping vehicles, park alongside road; there are few, if any, pull-in sites. There is room for a tent or two in the sIte. Most of the lakeside sites also have a small amount of slope.

The camp hosts were absolutely fantastic! There is firewood and ice for sale at the park. Polson is about 20-30 mInutes away and has grocery stores, etc. If you go to Polson, check out The Cove Deli for some really great ice-cream.

The showers were really awkward, but did the job. They take $ coins (available from host if needed) and quarters.

If you aren’t bringing your own boat, Boat Rentals and Rides is only 2 miles down the road. We rented 2 glass bottom kayaks. Warning: lake conditions change suddenly and we saw the waves blow in 2 dIfferent directions durIng the 2 days we were there. There were no bear boxes at the sites, only one by the bathroom.

    Missoula KOA Holiday

    New Favorite . . .

This place is on my shortlist for favorites for my week long getaway with my daughter who is 5. To be honest I was a bit concerned after reading a couple reviews describing the place. But hey, we all have bad days, and if I can read 90% positive vibe from a review I will check it out. I will say This place is an oasis that is in a manufactured home area that is very nice. Once you are in, it is a pure KOA experience. So far no company consistently does better than OK always across the board.

Could not be happier with the customer service, and the staff that work here. Just simply top notch. They represent the true spirit of the KOA campgrounds. they lead you to your campsite, they will deliver wood for you, they monitor the pool at all times, make it easy to rent a little bike, and Wednesday through Saturday they have ice cream socials.

I was a bit surprised that I did not see more children here. They have all the amenities that they have in Billings. I think some of the other reviews do not paint a quality picture of this place from a child’s eye. This is my daughters favorite place. From the bike rental to the playground, putt putt golf, swimming pool (2 Adult hot tubs - very clean).

Of course as Tenters the big thing I look at is where I am pounding in my stakes :-) and the grass here in Missoula is perfect. They have several very creative approaches to tent sites. The one that I am staying at has a tent circle, five sites in the round, facing outward, fenced on each side with a picnic table, stand up barbecue, fire pit that is grated, picnic table, running water, electricity, and nice grass. I wish more campgrounds had this creative approach. Everything is well spread out and segregated between cabins, centers, and RV’s.

They even have two really nice teepees in the center of the campground. They are super deluxe and the next time I come here I will be staying in one of them. See the photos.

The campground store is the best stock store of all the KOA’s that I stayed in on this trip. They have everything from ice cream sandwiches to souvenirs.

The facilities are well-maintained and very clean. I’d like the cypher locks on the bathrooms/showers for safety. The driveways are well-maintained, they have a painted bike path for riders. Overall this was just wonderful!

If you have a couple days here I would suggest a 40 minute drive to the National Bison Range. The kids will love it!

PS - My daughter wanted me to add that they have three very large bunnies that roll around the campground. She loves them.

    Edgewater RV Resort & Motel

Flathead Harbor Resort RV Luxury Condos and Cabins / Edgewater RV Resort & Motel

Stayed in a cabin for a couple nights and had a great stay! You can hear a bit of road noise due to being in town and near the main road, but everything else was great: clean, showers, laundry facilities, near groceries/restaurants, pet-friendly, etc.

Swan Lake Trading Post & Campground

Loads of Amenities in a Gorgeous Area!

This small campground packs a tremendous punch! RVs (if I had to guess, accommodates 8-12 total), rustic cabins, two yurts, and pondside tent sites - there are no defined tent sites; anywhere along the pond perimeter is fair game.

We stayed just one night in one of the yurts ($35 summer 2021), which is equipped with two cots and a battery-operated lantern. After checking in with the camp hosts (who are lovely!), we got a key to the showers, bathrooms, and laundry room. The hosts keep these areas immaculate, cleaning often. There's also very limited wifi on the porch just outside the bathrooms/showers.

The campground has a great vibe and everyone is very friendly. Between the pond and Swan Lake just across the street, it is buggy, but you cannot beat the location!

The general store is still closed due to flooding last summer, but new construction is well underway.

    The Sanctuary Campground

    BEST VIEWS AND HOT SHOWERS!

The have lots of campsites, group sites, small cabins, and big cabins!  We rented a big cabin for the 6 of us!

They have restrooms with hot showers! There were lots hiking trails and ATV riding trails!

The views looking at the Rocky Mountains were breath taking!  There was a community area where we could hang out and have a bonfire!

And the price was so reasonable!

    Whitefish-Kalispell North KOA

    Family friendly, not really “camping”

If you’re looking for family friendly, this is your spot. Lots of kids activities. Free breakfast. Washrooms, showers and laundry facility available. Scenically, it’s not very pretty. Sites are very close together with little privacy. Our spot was so small we couldn’t fit our tent, picnic table and fire pit in it. We had to park somewhere else, and move the picnic table our. If you prefer exploring nature and quiet, this isn’t the park for you.

    Camp Paxson

    Amazing!

Sone of my favorite summer memories are at this campground. Primitive cabins with electricity and bunk beds but nothing else. Dock to jump off of. Trails all over seely lake. An area with benches surrounding the fire and a stage. Easy to get to.

Big Arm State Unit — Flathead Lake State Park

    Hidden 💎

This place is amazing! We're staying on loop A and we are right on the water. No electricity but there's clean bathrooms, clean shower house that costs tokens, picnic tables, fire rings, fresh water spickets and access to buy ice and firewood from the camp hosts! So peaceful here. Will be coming back here for sure!!

Guide to Charlo

Camping cabin options near Charlo, Montana provide access to Flathead Lake's 200-square miles of clear water and the surrounding Mission Mountains. The region sits at approximately 3,000 feet elevation with summer temperatures typically ranging from 75-90°F during peak season. Winter cabin rentals remain limited as most facilities close between mid-October and early May due to snowfall and freezing temperatures.

What to Do

Fishing access points: Finley Point Unit offers excellent shore fishing opportunities with boat launch facilities. "Stumbled on this campground last August while looking for a place to park the RV for a night on the way up to GNP. Next year, we plan to rent a boat from Polson, then get a slip here for a couple of days to take advantage of that lake access," notes Blake W.

Beach swimming: Big Arm State Unit provides designated swimming areas with gradual entry points. "This park is gorgeous, most of the sites are along the water, and there's a boat launch and hiking trails too. Staff is very friendly and the views of the lake and Wild Horse Island are incredible!" says Juliana H.

Hot springs soaking: Wild Horse Hot Springs offers natural mineral pools with varying temperatures. "Great place to soak up in the hot springs. They have a huge variety of separate pools to choose from. $35 for tent spot and $14 per person to soak in their hot spring pools. Beautiful views all around," reports Melita B.

What Campers Like

Lake views: Tent sites at Finley Point provide direct waterfront access. "This was an amazing tent site. A little windy at night, but I loved falling asleep to the sound of the wind and waves breaking as we were right next to the water. The sunset was beautiful and the campground stayed quiet until after 8 so we were able to sleep in," shares Danielle O.

Clean facilities: Jocko Hollow Campground maintains well-kept cabin and bathroom facilities. "This campground is nice and small and tucked away so that you can explore the woods and wilderness around it. It is very well kept and a great value for the price," notes Douglas M.

Pet-friendly options: Cabin rentals at Rollins RV Park welcome dogs with dedicated outdoor spaces. "Amazingly relaxing park! Friendly staff and well kept grounds," reports Cat O., who appreciated the pet-friendly accommodations.

What You Should Know

Reservation timing: Summer cabin bookings fill 3-6 months in advance, especially lakefront options. "The camping spots are close together but everyone has enough space. Lots of large trailers in the b loop — big, flat spots. A couple of walk-in sites still available at 3 pm on a Saturday in late June!" advises Nicki A. about Rollins RV Park.

Cabin furnishing variations: Most basic cabins include beds and electricity but lack cooking facilities. "Small camp, has shower, and laundry. I was by a lovely gurgling creek. Only drawback was highway traffic. But convenient from 93," notes Lisa about Jocko Hollow.

Water access considerations: Not all cabins have direct lake access points. "Our site was right on the lake. We enjoyed a very lazy day hanging out, reading and swimming," explains Stephanie S., highlighting Big Arm State Unit's waterfront placement.

Tips for Camping with Families

Playground amenities: Granite Peak RV Resort provides multiple play areas near cabin rentals. "Nice amenities (mini golf, horse shoes, pool, dog park), close enough to town. Grass at our site," notes A.T.

Educational opportunities: Wildlife viewing opportunities include deer sightings at Finley Point. "I stayed to the north at Big Horn and on the west side. This was by far the best spot out of all three. Great views of the water. Great sunsets. Wildlife like it here too. Saw deer every night," shares Chris G.

Bathroom proximity: Select cabins near facilities when traveling with small children. "Bathroom is a vault toilet with too many bugs, but oh well, it's camping," mentions Danielle O. about Finley Point State Park.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Missoula KOA Holiday provides more level sites than other nearby options. "The tent site was spacious and had outdoor lighting. Definitely had a lot more amenities than we are generally used to!" reports Vanessa M.

Seasonal closures: Most cabin rental facilities close by mid-October. "Located on the north side of town, about 15 min drive to downtown Missoula. A bit overpriced, but do accept Good Sam membership for discount until next year," notes Julia M. about Granite Peak RV Resort.

Connectivity options: Cell service varies dramatically around Flathead Lake. "We enjoyed our stay so much that we ended up asking if they could extend their service past October 1st and they said YES! The wifi is really really good, can even watch football on Sundays," explains Blake C. about his experience at Rollins RV Park.
