Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area

Nice military campground on the Lake of the Ozarks

The Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area (LORA) is a great destination for camping, boating, swimming, water skiing, fishing and other outdoor activities. The lake is one of the Nation's largest man-made lakes, providing you with over 1150 miles of shoreline to enjoy. LORA welcomes Active Duty Military, Retired Military, members of the National Guard and Reserves, DoD employees with ID cards, family members and Fort Leonard Wood contract employees.  Plenty to do and see here.  Boat rentals, hiking, and others mentioned above.  The LORA Country Store carries ice, beverages, firewood and a small selection of food including snacks, milk, eggs and bread. The store also carries the basic necessities needed for camping and fishing, including fishing licenses.  Can rent a tent site, camper site with full or partial hook ups, cabins 1-3 bedroom, etc.  The marina has boat and jet-ski rentals (pontoons, wave runners, jet ski's, ski boats, fishing boats, pontoons, etc.) that are much more reasonable then other rental places in the area. Area is staffed by on-duty MP's out of Fort Leonard Wood.

Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area

Very quiet, very pretty, several issues.

Asked for a lake view cabin. We were the only ones here since it was a weekday after labor day so all cabins were open. I go to check in and it's a long sidewalk between narrow rails. Not at all easy if you are disabled and with my COPD, I had to stop several times.

I get cabin 6. If you go here DO NOT GET CABIN 6. It's the only one you can't park in front of as it's down the side of a hill. You must traverse several levels of steps down a steep grade. The office hours are over by now so I hauled what we needed down.

The lake view was somewhere past the forest so I'll take their word on that.

The refrigerator was filthy and we had no hot water. Since it was after hours all we could do is clean the fridge, make supper and wait till 9 in the morning to call maintenance.

Maintenance arrives and determine the elements are bad. At about 10:30am they started working. Spent most of our only full day watching them fix the water heater. The maintenance guys were very nice but I'm not leaving my stuff with strangers.

So basically, I spent $200 to sit on a deck with acorns falling on us or on the world's most uncomfortable couch as they worked on getting me hot water. Early morning fishing was shot.

They did say we could now switch cabins but I would need to move our stuff back up Mt Fk-That just to move it again into the new cabin, then back out again tomorrow.

It is a lovely area and the people are friendly but they need to do better. Also, warn people that cabin 6 is more cliff side than lake side.

    Camp Takimina

Beautiful quiet campground in Columbia MO!

We stayed at Camp Takimina on our first shakedown trip with our Popup camper.  It was amazing.  It was about 5-10 minutes from I-70, super easy to get to. The camp was quiet, private, and peaceful.  There are no hookups, but water was right next to us near the parking lot, and the picnic tables near the lodge were shaded most of the day.  Portapotties were clean and well stocked.  We brought our dog and two children and the had an absolutely fabulous time!  We hiked a lot in the woods, played in the creek, and had plenty of time and space to figure out our new to us popup camper.  There aren't actual spots for to park in, it is just a big gravel lot with a couple designated areas for campers if the lot is full (it wasn't full at all).  We reserved Arrow Hill also, which is a huge site right next to the parking lot, so we had a campfire ring to cook on.  Most of the firepits have benches that surround them, which was very handy not to have to move chairs around all the time.  The tent sites were huge- easily would fit multiple tents at each site, and we will absolutely be back to tent camp, and with the popup too!

    Happy Acres

Stayed 2 of 3 reserved nights.

PLEASE NOTE THIS REVIEW IS FOR "RV" PARK ONLY. WE DID NOT USE THE EVENT CENTER AND BED & BREAKFAST. We pushed ourselves to stay 2 of our scheduled 3 nights. This is a trailer park with RVs. All hands off for reservations and parking. Stopped in at the office and they could have cared less. Parked us next to someone that yelled at everyone she was on the phone with and although dog had a leash on was loose. We like dogs but this one was not too interested in being friendly. Maybe construction at entrance is complete now but was a mess when we were there. Wifi stunk. So this 1 star is a 0 star.....first one I have ever given.

    Ruby's Landing River Resort

    Peaceful and scenic stay

Ruby's Landing River Resort is the place if you are wanting a place that has wildlife, beautiful river views and away from the lights of town.  We enjoyed hanging out with our friends on the porch of Cabin #3, eating a great steak and catching up.  The town of Waynesville is not far away and they had a couple of grocery stores, some restaurants and Uranus!! I definitely want to come back for their annual Haunted River Float.

    Ruby's Landing River Resort

    Dirty cabins and rude staff!

The cabin was disgusting 🤢 bugs crawling in the fridge, door was held together with a wire hanger. Rudest staff I've ever encountered.

Guide to Lohman

Cabin camping near Lohman, Missouri provides access to central Missouri's Ozark highland geography, with elevations ranging from 600-800 feet. The area experiences humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, making late spring and early fall ideal for overnight lodging in cabins. Most cabins in this region sit within 30 miles of Lohman, primarily concentrated around Lake of the Ozarks and nearby recreation areas.

What to do

Fishing from your doorstep: Cross Creek RV Park cabins provide immediate access to an 8-acre stocked lake. "We tent camped on the island for 2 nights. It was awesome, you can fish right off the bank of your own private island within in minutes of waking up," notes one visitor who appreciated the convenience for families.

Water recreation options: Coconuts RV Resort offers multiple swimming pools for cabin guests. "The top had 2 pools, shower house, and restroom all new and very NICE! The lower pools are big with scenic views of the boats and lake front," according to a summer visitor who appreciated the tiered layout overlooking the lake.

Hiking nearby: Cabin accommodations at several locations connect to trail systems. One visitor to Camp Takimina reported, "We hiked a lot in the woods, played in the creek, and had plenty of time and space" during their cabin stay, noting the peaceful setting just 5-10 minutes from Interstate 70.

What campers like

Spacious interiors: Many Lake of the Ozarks cabins feature multiple bedrooms. A visitor to Cedar Creek Resort & RV Park shared, "We just took 40+ family members and everyone fell in love with this campground. We had family from Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri, and everyone raved how this was their new favorite spot."

Waterfront positioning: Several cabin rentals offer direct water access. A recent guest at Cedar Creek Resort noted, "The cabins are spectacular and right on the water," highlighting newly constructed units added to meet demand.

Boat rental access: Cabin guests appreciate on-site watercraft options. "The marina has boat and jet-ski rentals (pontoons, wave runners, jet ski's, ski boats, fishing boats, pontoons, etc.) that are much more reasonable then other rental places in the area," according to a visitor at Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area, who noted the value compared to commercial rental services.

What you should know

Access road conditions: Some cabin locations have challenging entry roads. A visitor to Cross Creek RV Park warned, "The road to get in and out of this place is absolutely ridiculous. You can try to go 1mph to avoid potholes or washed out area just to hit the next pothole and washed out area."

Reservation requirements: Advance booking is essential for cabin stays. Turner Katy Trail Shelter requires calling their office at 573-634-2322 to make reservations, and group reservations have specific pricing ($25 plus $2 for each member for groups over 10 people).

Military restrictions: Military Park Fort Leonard Wood Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area cabins are limited to specific eligible persons. "Beautiful campground... available for military (active/retired/DAV). A little difficult to get to it and fairly far from towns but it's worth it," notes a visitor who appreciated the secluded setting despite the travel distance.

Tips for camping with families

Cabin selection strategy: Choose cabins based on terrain and accessibility needs. One visitor to Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area cautioned, "If you go here DO NOT GET CABIN 6. It's the only one you can't park in front of as it's down the side of a hill. You must traverse several levels of steps down a steep grade."

Kid-friendly amenities: Many cabins have additional family attractions on-site. A visitor to Boiling Springs Campground shared, "Access to the boiling spring with swing rope into the river. Canoe floats can be scheduled at the office," highlighting activities that appeal to children and teens.

Island camping options: Some properties offer unique cabin locations. A Cross Creek RV Park visitor noted, "We tent camped on the island... Had a restroom on the island, big plus for a family with 5 little ones," emphasizing the convenience of facilities when staying with children.

Tips from RVers

Cabin alternatives: RV sites often provide more shade than cabin areas. A visitor to Linn Creek KOA observed, "Nice quiet Wooded kamp. Very nice, clean and quiet. We are here in the middle of October waiting for the leaves to turn. Good access to the Lake of the Ozarks," highlighting the seasonal advantages.

Transition planning: Cabin rentals work well for RVers needing temporary accommodations. "Spacious and mostly level sites, which is outstanding as this park is on face of a hill," noted a March visitor who appreciated the terrain management at Linn Creek KOA when transitioning from cabin to RV camping.

Supply considerations: Pack essentials when staying in cabins. "The LORA Country Store carries ice, beverages, firewood and a small selection of food including snacks, milk, eggs and bread. The store also carries the basic necessities needed for camping and fishing, including fishing licenses," according to a visitor describing supplies available at Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area.
