Description

National Forest

Free camping often comes with a beautiful hike or paddle, and when you get there it can be hit or miss if they are full since they are all first come first serve. Be prepared to have to continue on to the next area or return to your last point so you are not caught off guard or end up recking a wonderful experience for someone else. And remember to be mindful that much of the Superior Hiking Trail is on private land and they owner can remove it from the system if you are not respectful of this gift.

South Bally Creek Pond Campsites are located on the Superior Hiking Trail and can be reached by traveling approximately 3 miles from the SHT overnight parking lot just north of Cty Rd 6, where it cuts back to the east, where 115F (dirt road) heads north. It can also be reached by parking at the SHT Bally Creek Road trail system lot on Cty Rd 48/158 and hiking .2 Miles East. Remoteness and closeness of trail to gorges make advance planning important.

Water from Beaver Pond if filtered.

Beaver Pond Bummer

Not my favorite campground on the Superior Hiking Trail. Heading southbound from Grand Marais this was to be our first possible water source after a very warm day. The Pond looked ok in the middle. It it was very warm (brain eating amoeba anyone?) and stagnant on the edges. The latrine was pleasant. The fire pit was in full sun and too hot to sit on the benches so we opted to rest on a shady slope nearby. The tent pads were few and sloping as well. It felt a bit claustrophobic with trees and no views. Even the pond was not in view. If you're heading SOBO then I recommend a couple extra miles to the small but moving Sundling Creek campsite or even better the Trout Creek campsite on the Cascade River.
