If you're like me and hate camping 10 feet from a million campers in a crowded campground, then this island site is for YOU! The campsite itself is a double occupancy. We had 4 adults and 5 kids and had plenty of space for two big tents and all our stuff. The canoeing is a quick 15 minute paddle from the lakeside campground on the far east side of the lake. (I wanna respect everyone's ability to paddle a canoe, but this is a level 1/easy peazy/if my 9 year old can do it then so can you kind of paddle.)
The island is filled with tons of old oak trees and has plenty of space to string up a hammock or two in the shade. The tent pads aren't the most level, but they aren't the worst I've pitched on either. The dock is nice and low so getting in and out with your gear is a breeze. We camped over the 4th of July and even with the busy holiday boat traffic still felt pretty secluded, especially at night. The vaulted toilet was nice to have on the island too. We had to canoe in our water in portable jugs, but that's how we usually camp.
It would have been nice to have a food locker of some sort in the campsite as both nights we stayed we had a big old fat raccoon in the campsite trying to get into our food. We ended up putting our totes with all the food/garbage wedged under the bench of the picnic tables in order to keep them out. Still didn't stop them from dragging a cooler of ours into the woods one night. (Darn trash pandas.)
The only reason this didn't get 5 stars is because the area around the island is all weeds and muck. You'll have to paddle west into the big part of the lake (10 minutes) and dock your canoe next to the swimming beach if you want a muck and weed-free swimming experience.
One of the other reviews said it's not really a destination, but if you're gonna stay there, it's nice completely agree with that. There's a lot of bike trails. Town is right there. There's very few restaurants, but there are some. And everybody seemed friendly. I don't use the facilities because I'm in my camper. But while they were warm, not sure, I would have felt comfortable showering in them. But there's water at the sight trash at the sight electricity right there. It was fine.
I'm primarily a hiker, and there were just very few hiking trails. I have a feeling. It's gorgeous in the fall with the turning of the colors, but the weather was poor cold, very windy. You couldn't do the hike on the beach, even because the waves were too high. So in rough weather, once you've done the hiking trails which took about 2 hours. You were kind of done there was nothing else to do. Even boating would have been questionable and probably not any fun at all. Last, I don't see anybody say it, but the signage was really poor coming into the park. You couldn't really tell which way to turn to get to your campsite. And as evidenced by everybody who drove past me trying to find their camp spot even though I was the only one in that campground I have a feeling others struggled as well. I might come back in the fall. I drove through town before I left. And there were a lot of ice fishing Jacksontown, so my guesses it's more of a winter spot. Or a boating spot than anything else. And last we did see a bear, it's remote. There were probably all of ten people camping there, So not surprising to see wildlife, but the just about walked up on the bear.
I think this place is wonderfully scenic and the lake is so pretty. I like it is limited boating and really made for the kayak sort of paddling. The water is very high this year and the mosquitoes are out in force. Also, there is zero cell service and if you are right parked at the office, you could get on their free wifi which is likely what I will have to do for work. I put my starlink on the roof of the van but the service is horrible and even though I changed to most exposed spot, it isn't enough. The office staff was very nice but I will likely need to unplug and commute out to work.
The campground is really nice. It's full of regular repeat campers every week. Not really a place, I would come and stop for a night or two. There's a tiny lake and it's very pretty, but it's not really. A place designed for travelers or overnighters, you could do it. There was a price on the wall, but I think most of the people here are people that are here every weekend.
The campground is tiny but there are showers, bathrooms and water readily available and I think it is a lightly used park. Good trails, nice exhibits and a surprising amount of wildlife. The river was very high and overall very wet summer so far but green.
Right outside national wetland refuge, no amenties and no upkeep during the summer months till deer season, plenty of wooded sites minimal hammock trees, several sites large enough for campers.
Camped at site #31 in the Ridge Campground on Oct 16, 2023. Nice primitive campground in the state park. Wooded and open sites. Beautiful Fall color on birch trees. Spacing between sites is pretty good with limited privacy. Back-in dirt/gravel sites. Trash service. Clean vault toilet. Hand pump for water. Metal fire ring, table and lantern pole. The state park is beautiful with hiking trails & walks along Lake of the Woods. There is no direct access to hiking and the lake from this campground. Enjoyed camping here; would stay here again.
The campground (CG) was easy to find, and the regular street address brought us right into the CG. One of our friends had arrived a few days early and let us know that the CG manager was off, so there was no need to stop first at the office at the opposite end of the CG from our site. The sites are set up in a series of cul-de-sacs, but not the traditional cul-de-sac. We had to back in from off the main CG road and then turn slightly to get into back-in site 47 with FHUs. The water and electric were more centered on this very long site, but the sewer was at the back, where we needed around 20’ of sewer hose. The water pressure was around 40 psi. There are a lot of mature trees in this CG, and we actually had to cut down a small tree(with permission) so it wouldn't scratch our rig coming back out. We backed up to a field, so we were able to get a clear shot for Starlink. Our friends had satellite dishes, and they had to move their dishes around mature trees to get a signal. The CG has 25 cable channels that worked well. The CG manager did stop by to see how we were doing and answer any questions we might have, and he let us know where the lawnmower was stored if we wanted to cut the grass around our site during our three-week stay. Our party of four rigs pretty much had the CG to ourselves during our stay. There were six seasonals, but they were mostly only there on the weekends. There were a few campers that came in for a couple of days during our stay. People come to this area for one thing, and that is to fish with a side trip through Canada to Angle Inlet, MN, the farthest point north in the lower 48. The CG has no playground but does have a nice fish-cleaning station. There is a shower and restroom in the little office building. There are two laundry facilities nearby. Baudette has a nice grocery and hardware store. There’s no formal dog park, but we were told the large field adjacent to the park is off-leash, which we took advantage of. We got two bars on Verizon. The CG has WiFi, but we were too far from the antenna to connect. One rig in our party got a signal, but they said it was weak. This CG is about a mile from the Rainy River, so there is no direct water access. Check out Cypress Resort for fishing charters and great food. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this CG.
Camped at Lake Bronson the first weekend of June at site 47 beside the lake. Our site had nice shade (beware - quite a few lake side sites are full sun), a necessity on the unusually warm June weekend. All amenities were very well maintained and close to our campsite. Unsure of how close sites were at the Two Rivers campground but Lake side were very close and multiple people were up until late into the evening. Not an issue for us, but if you're looking to get away in a more secluded location this would not be for you.
With temps in the mid 90s we enjoyed plenty of time in the lake, hiked to the top of the WPA observation tower, listened to trumpeter swans & watched the sun set over the lake .
One thing of note - our campsite was CRAWLING with ticks. Upon waking we had over a dozen hanging onto the outside of our tent, and picked more than we could count off of ourselves during our 24 hour stay. Unsure if it was a banner year for the buggers or if the location of the camping sites in grass next to a tree line was a perfect breeding ground but it was truly remarkable.
Site 42 is on the lake and is a long, breezy spot. This park and campground are both pretty small but still a great stay! I was here early in the season...a lot of the trails had flooding. The hiking club trail was particularly bad as a good portion was at least ankle deep. My dog had to be carried so I wasn't able to get pictures of that 🤣
Minimal cell service here which is great if you're looking to get away! Plenty of hiking and there's a lake for fishing. There are some other state parks fairly close if you're trying to do the hiking and passport clubs. Really enjoyed my time here.
Vault toilets were not clean and low on TP. Sites were not well maintained Ed- garbage in fire ring. Lots of mosquitoes.

This is a gorgeous park with lots of birds and wildlife. The lake is beautiful and the campsites are all shady and well maintained. The sites vary a lot in size, but most are level and relatively private. There's a shower house and pit toilets that are very nice. The boat launch and beach are awesome.
However. Have you seen the movie 300? Or any other movie where a small force faces an unthinkably massive foe? Well, that's you and the mosquitoes here, and I regret to inform you that you are the Spartans. You are vastly outnumbered and though you may fight bravely, you will not win this battle. Seriously, there were so many mosquitoes that people were walking around in June in full sweatsuits with netted hats. We were here two nights and went through two entire bottles of bug spray. These things laugh at citronella candles and want you and your whole family dead and drained of blood. If you can hold them off, this park is well worth it. But don't come here thinking you'll just be an efficient swatter and get by.
We loved this state park! We had 6 sites at the Birch Campground for an annual family camp outing. All of our sites were flat, private and large. Easy to fit a couple tents, a screen tent and a boat on. Hardly anyone besides us in this campground in the 5 days we spent here.
The beach is absolutely beautiful! White fine sand, shallow water and lots of shoreline to have privacy if you want. The fishing pier was taken out by ice a couple years ago and needs replacing which was a bummer. It was also way too windy on the big lake for our fishing boat, but the wind did not effect the campgrounds at all.
Know before you go: there are no toilets or sinks in the whole park. Only vault toilets and showers are only located at front of park. You will need a vehicle to get around. The marina, beach and front office are miles away from each other. No electric and water hookups for Campers.
Stayed here for a night during the week and the sites a little further from the main bathroom are VERY private. Stayed in site 9 which had one good set of trees for hanging a hammock. There was a picnic table and fire ring and I couldn’t see any other sites. Took a quick walk along the lake and it was gorgeous. Will definitely bring my kayak next time. It’d you’re looking for a private site, close to a vault toilet with a lot of trees 7 looked like a good one. Flush toilets and showers available, vault toilets as well for the sites further from the main bathroom. Drinking water available. Weak cell service. Overall a lovely park.

This is a well kept campground in a beautiful town park in Newfolden. It would be a good option for a stop if travelling through the area, or wanting a smaller quieter option than the busy campground at nearby Lake Bronson. Much of the park facilities have been renovated in recent years, providing a beautiful picnic shelter, gardens and play areas. Bathrooms are provided. It would be a great place for a family reunion or other group gathering for folks from the area.
Note: no fires are allowed currently, especially with the drought and fire danger throughout the region.

Very nice campground. Stayed on the lake side of the park. Very many campsites. Stayed in site 8, which had an electric option. Was tucked in the corner so the wind out of the west wasn’t much of an issue. The beach was nearby as was the boat rentals. The bathrooms and showers were clean and maintained daily. The bathroom and shower house at the beach was exceptionally well maintained.
The beach is lovely with a magnificent lake view. There's a light house at one end along with some large rocks that are apart of the Canadian shield.
A very beautiful park for a day trip or weekend camping. The trails aren't exhastingly long but are very dynamic and have an abundance of wildlife. The historic area is well kept and very cool so check it out!!
