We had a great view of the lake from our tent site. Sites were very large for a state park. We had many lovely walks on the trails around the campground. Loon Island was a cool walk on a hot day. Lake Shetek had a fish kill over the winter, so our boat only got one trip out on the lake. I would definitely recommend.
We were pleasantly surprised by our family trip to Cass Lake. The Norway Loop was quiet, sites were spaces out pretty well and had lots of tall trees for shade. Lots of paved and unpaved walking and biking trails. The lake has sand all around it, so easy to create your own private beach for your group. We would definitely come back!
We loved this state park! We had 6 sites at the Birch Campground for an annual family camp outing. All of our sites were flat, private and large. Easy to fit a couple tents, a screen tent and a boat on. Hardly anyone besides us in this campground in the 5 days we spent here.
The beach is absolutely beautiful! White fine sand, shallow water and lots of shoreline to have privacy if you want. The fishing pier was taken out by ice a couple years ago and needs replacing which was a bummer. It was also way too windy on the big lake for our fishing boat, but the wind did not effect the campgrounds at all.
Know before you go: there are no toilets or sinks in the whole park. Only vault toilets and showers are only located at front of park. You will need a vehicle to get around. The marina, beach and front office are miles away from each other. No electric and water hookups for Campers.
We tent camped in the non electric sites in the Lower Campground. They were shady thank goodness, but not very flat or large. Your tent will be on rocks, not grass.
When we were visiting, the shower house was closed due to Covid, so no review of that. The vault toilet was stocked with TP and fairly clean. The portapotty was near full and smelled awful. Didn’t look like it had been emptied all summer! Gross.
The lake was really high when we visited, which led to a useless campground fishing pier and a boat dock that you had to swim to to use. There was no beach, but there may have been if the water level was normal. Watch out for biting sunnies in the swim area and enormous snapping turtles stealing the fish off your hook at the fishing pier near the swim area.
We did go into Starbuck which is 5 miles away. Very impressive beach, groceries and a DQ all an easy drive away.
We love the peaceful, private campsites. The lake is beautiful. Fishing is great when you know where to go. Very rustic and clean. Nearest supplies are about 15 miles away, so double check inventory before you leave Hwy 61.
