Electric motors only on Hayes Lake keep the water calm for paddlers, while the pine forest setting provides both shade and privacy between sites. Hayes Lake State Park Campground operates year-round in northern Minnesota, offering two distinct camping experiences through its main loops and walk-in sites.
Loop A provides non-electric sites where some campers run solar panels and generators, while Loop B includes electric hookups for RVs up to 40 feet. The pine canopy allows glimpses of neighboring sites but creates adequate spacing. "Sites a little further from the main bathroom are VERY private," notes Torey H., who found site 9 particularly secluded with good hammock trees. Both flush toilets with showers and vault toilets serve different areas of the campground.
The lake draws many visitors for kayaking and canoeing, with rentals available at the park. A boat dock provides water access, though the lakeshore from some areas requires navigating reeds and sediment. The two walk-in sites offer the most seclusion, positioned on a ridge overlooking the lake about a quarter-mile from parking. These sites lack bear boxes, requiring campers to secure their own food storage.
Cell service remains weak to nonexistent throughout the park, with limited wifi available near the office. Summer brings thick mosquito populations, making bug spray essential. The park maintains clean facilities and enforces quiet hours effectively. Firewood is available at the park office, and each site includes a picnic table and fire ring.
For a different experience, Bemis Hill Campground sits northeast in the state forest system.
